June 1980 saw my birth, Funky Town by Lipps inc was the hot track around that time but The Theme To Mash was number one when I came into the world kicking and screaming.
Move forward to 1984 and Van Halen brought out Jump which my mum said used to have me bouncing around the living room like I was on a pogo.
Paula Abdul brought out Opposites Attract in 1990 and I remember I had a thing for her as she prance around on video with an animated cat looking sexy as hell! Also, that year, Ice Ice Baby came out which is still one of my favourite tracks today.
The mid 90s were all about rap for me and B.I.G. did the business time after time. His death in 97 was a huge loss to the rap scene as the man was a genius of his time.
At the end of the 90s Savage Garden - Truly, Madly, Deeply and Brandy and Monica - The boy Is Mine came out as I was trying my best to find a girlfriend. Will Smith didn't help my case because he had me believing it was all about Getting Jiggy With It.
My 20s saw me out with friends every week taking in the clubs and tracks such as Eric Pridz - Call On Me(what a video!), Adaggio For Strings, Castles In The Sky, Pretty Green Eyes, Tocas Miracle, Set You Free and many many more had me boogying the nights away to the wee small hours.
When I turned 30 I went to ibiza for one last blow out and Dizzie Rascal was the chart topper with Bonkers at that time. I remember losing my friend in a club called Play2 and was starting to fret but then Bonkers came on and I beelined for the dance floor and my mate found me there a while later throwing all kinds of shapes.
As my 30s progressed my musical tastes kind of regressed and I found myself listening to mostly 80s rock and Motown classics. The Temptations and Marvyn Gaye would sing so sweetly that my troubles would melt away and I'd be happiest with my headphone in. As my 30s came to an end my musical taste changed again but in a sense that I no longer had a particular genre that I would listen to. I would go searching for anything from classical to country, from rock to jazz, wherever my mood took me.
Im 40 now and I love music more than ever and am still fluid in my choices of artist or genre. I particularly love the music threads on Fab because you guys mention some fantastic tracks that I had forgotten about of have never heard before and I love searching and listening to them on YouTube and getting lost on in the resulting recommendations that appear from my searches.
So come on, tell us what music you remember making a difference in your life growing up and give me some new material to search for |
