Home is where the heart is?
Jump to: Newest in thread
So earlier someone, said I sounded as if I was from Swansea (disclaimer that isn't a bad thing, promise Mrs HW). But I'm from a rural area west of Swansea.
Now maybe it's because I'm a county bumpkin I was surprised that someone thought I was from a city. I'm actively trying to teach my boys my local dialect. And have a strong sense of identity with my farming and rural roots.
Do you have a sense of belonging to a certain area of the country or have a longing for home if you haven't visited there recently? Do you have a sense of local pride? Be it daily or when your football team has its local derby? |

It's odd, other than my family home as a kid, nowhere ever felt like home to me...until my first visit to see J in Turkey, by the end of my first day I knew I could live there.
Whenever I go back, it feels like coming home I cannot wait for the day I step off that plane and know the next time I'll be back on one is out of choice.

I’ve lived in many places over the years and don’t even have a specific accent but I will always be a manc and proud of it. As for footie. United through and through. I even still have a season ticket! |

Think you must have the equivalent of the Welsh word hiraeth, it's a feeling of belonging of being at home. That's an amazing feeling though |

It really is! I'm very highly strung, and battle mental health issues, but I really feel a sense of calm there.
It's where I'm meant to live. |

None what so ever. Home is specifically where my heart is and that is my family - parents, son etc. No area holds a particular pull to me although I adore Devon and Cornwall as all my extended family live there and so have spent a lot of time there |

The strangest thing about where I live now and an affinity with it is that as far as I was aware my family from way back when on my mums side were from Yorkshire.
Digging deeper into it, like 200 years earlier..... I had relatives that used to live a few streets away from where I moved to in the West Mids.
I found that really bizarre. |

Just popping in to say I definitely have the Swansea Jack accent and you have the lovely country bumpkin rural west wales accent. I dare say there may be similarities in our accents but to each other they are different.
In answer to your thread I don't actually have a sense of local pride. I would quite happily relocate to north wales and will do that once my youngest finishes school in a few years. I have more of a sense of longing to live in the environment that I love as I enjoy the great outdoors and NW gives me that fix of happiness.
Maybe when I have lived there for a few years I may change my mindset on a sense of local pride.... ask me again in 5 -10 years

I live in Cardiff, have done for over 25 years, I class it as home
My parents don't live in my home town anymore, Cardiff is my home, where my kids were born, where my businesses are.
I could never see me leaving Wales, even though my husband is English.
Cardiff is an excellent base to everything Welsh and beyond

I wouldn't say I have a particular sense of belonging to a particular area of the country or local pride or any particular sense of Englishness and I don't think 'woohoo, I'm English'.
And I don't follow sport so I have no allegiances there either. I've just never been a 'group' person or belonging to a particular group or 'tribe'.
My sense of belonging comes from where where my family is and they are my group. |

Probably not the answer you're looking for but for me not at all. I've made my home 200 miles from where I was born and have no intention or desire to go back.
Aside from that I cannot stand any form of nationalism, I feel pride in things I have personally achieved, I feel proud for things that those who I love have achieved, I feel nothing extra for the achievements of strangers simply because they were born in a similar location to me.
Neither people nor places are special to me based on the accident of their geographical birth place, who they are as people or the beauty of the place is the only really relevant factor to me.
I understand national or local pride at an intellectual level and can see how it has been a useful trait evolutionary speaking but it has no emotional appeal to me. In fact, totally the opposite, I tend to view love of one's place of birth as the socially acceptable end of a continuum that stretches through to outright nationalism and racism - as an English man in Wales that line gets very blurry on occasion - but of course it is all 'just banter'
That said, I do like where I live, I have the Gower and Beacons close by and (more importantly) my friends. These are the things that make it special for me. |

Oh I don't like some of the Welsh snobbery that can occur, I've no time for it. But I do like my kids understanding where their forefathers came from. And I guess my accent is a slice of my childhood that I keep with me at all times, if that makes sense? |

Oh ffs, I've only watched twin town so I'm not exactly an expert on Swansea!
I'm from Whitley, which is essentially the roughest part of a town called Reading, just west of London. My parents weren't well off at all. Reading is definitely where I belong and I have great memories of the place and I apparently sound like Ricky Gervais who is also from Whitley, although I dispute this and I'm gonna put my send vag video back up so you can hear and judge for yourselves. Sadly if I wanted a house like mine in Reading it would be the best part of 750k, so I'm happy slumming it in Trowvegas where nothing ever happens and I don't need to lock my front door here when I go out. Please don't stalk me or break into my house plz, thanks.... |

I was born in Greece but moved over here when I was a toddler, lived in Kent for a little while and then up on the North East coast... Newcastle is definitely home. I moved away and then was drawn back. I've got a soft Geordie accent which gets stronger when I'm d*unk or angry.
Although it's home I would move elsewhere. I'd always feel this was home but feel like I could put roots elsewhere x |

I’m such a Manc.. I have a proper Manc accent, the sarcasm and a great appreciation for rain. I love my city and the history and culture that I’ve grown up with. As much as I’d love to move rural I will be forever Manc. |

"Oh ffs, I've only watched twin town so I'm not exactly an expert on Swansea!
It was you who tried to nick my rucksack from my tent at a Reading Festival in the '90s. It was wasn't it? |

I'm very much a southern fairy always felt a little out if place in the more northern territories because of my accent. Though I've recently been told that I've developed a slightly northern twang now Time to move back... once I win the lottery |
