Last Night of the Proms - 8pm tonight - BBC1

Remember to singalong at home

Looking forward to hearing the new arrangements and of course my favourite part, the Benjamin Britten arrangement of the National Anthem

Enjoy

Land of Hope and Glory:

Land of Hope and Glory

Mother of the Free

How shall we extol thee

Who are born of thee?

Wider still, and wider

Shall thy bounds be set;

God, who made thee mighty

Make thee mightier yet!

Jerusalem:

And did those feet in ancient time

Walk upon England's mountain green?

And was the holy Lamb of God

On England's pleasant pastures seen?

And did the countenance divine

Shine forth upon our clouded hills?

And was Jerusalem builded here

Among those dark satanic mills?

Bring me my bow of burning gold!

Bring me my arrows of desire!

Bring me my spear! O clouds, unfold!

Bring me my chariot of fire!

I will not cease from mental fight,

Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand,

Till we have built Jerusalem

In England's green and pleasant land.

Rule Britannia:

Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves!

Britons never, never, never shall be slaves.

Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves!

Britons never, never, never shall be slaves.

Nah

I watched a wonderful prom featuring Sheku and Isata Kanneh-Mason last night. Such talent and beautiful playing.

There was also a wonderful performance of Beethoven’s 8th Symphony earlier in the week, with the orchestra playing the whole piece without music. I’ve played it many times, but can’t imagine doing that - amazing memory and nerve.

I don’t begrudge people their flagwaving and singing, but for me, the real beauty of the proms is always the ones like above.

.... and the John Wilson Orchestra Prom

Notwithstanding the flag waving etc. Last night can still provide beautiful moments and performances. Last years last night was outstanding for many reasons, not least hearing for the first time the wonderful Jamie Barton . (There was also a fantastic live chat in the lounge forum going on with fab members who were actually in the hall )

Golda Shultz is a very fine voice, and so I look forward to hearing her perform Strauss ‘Morgen’

I also really really love the Britten arrangement of the National anthem. LNOP is probably the only time you are likely to hear it performed ...

That’s a fair point. I’ve often enjoyed the first half .

I’ve done my fair share of prom concerts down r

the years (amateur). I just get a bit “oh, god, here we go again” these days, particularly given the current climate.

I totally get that the audience in the hall are a benign bunch though.

I loved last nights performance - I felt the piano was too high in the audio mix though, compared to the cello. I seemed to be the only one saying that online though.

I agree - sound engineers are skilled people but sometimes they shouldn’t bugger about with the buttons and sliders

The fiddle player due to perform the very beautiful Lark Ascending by Vaughan Williams has dropped out last minute, so we get to hear the fantastic Scottish violinist Nicola Benedetti perform it instead.

We went to last year's and it was good fun. It was my third time at the Last Night and Hannah's first. I look forward to the festival coming back properly next year and maybe we'll meet some Fabbers there.

I (Luke) doubt I'll watch tonight. I'm a regular Prommer and I like being there a lot more than watching.

Incidentally, the answer to this question posed by William Blake that Sir Hubert Parry set to music:

And did those feet in ancient times walk upon England's mountains green?

...is no they didn't. Or to be more precise, it is spectacularly unlikely.

And Rule.. Is all 18th century type thing with the orchestration and stripped back trumpets. Very regency, very siting it historically (as opposed to being directly relevant now).

Again. I think a point may be being made.

Prefer the original version of Jerusalem, fantastic, liked the Welsh folk part, and the lark ascending, and Elgar as always, great to see the reverand, Richard Coles in attendance, after his recent sad bereavement, enjoyed the show . Would like to go in person one day.

Wholeheartedly agree!

Why do people seek to change everything? Why do they think they can make an original far better and ruin it?

Or is it a singular lack of talent or expertise in creating something new?

I have had a read of twitterland this morning and there does appear to be recurring use of the words abomination, butchered, hacked ...

Shame really as she is a multi-talented musician, and not all of her work is as avant-garde as last nights arrangement.

And therein lies the problem I think - had the work been billed as a new commission "with influences from" the Hubert Parry original then the expectation may not have been so much for a traditional arrangement.

I wonder how many tuned in only for the arrangement, switched off afterwards and then missed the traditional version played later on (albeit played only on the magnificent AH organ)

One arrangement that most definitely does work - Britten's National anthem

I enjoyed it. I liked the new Jerusalem, but then I really enjoyed the modern piece by the Swedish composer - I was in the mood for being challenged, I guess.

Not being English maybe helps - it’s not a sacred cow to me. I do think it’s a lovely tune though, and I love the sentiments about working people in its words.

I thought Nicola Benedetti was great, and there’s many violinists I prefer to her normally. That’s similar to the OP and his feelings about Sheku (I agree with him to an extent actually - I saw SK-M perform and didn’t quite get what makes him stand out).

I’m glad people enjoyed Ar Lan y Mor - it’s a lovely tune.

It's pretty tough order to improve on such a iconic original as Jerusalem, think your right, better as a piece influenced by the original. It sounded quite avant-garde, very well performed, almost expected yoko ono to come out from behind the curtain as the mysterious guest performer. Though I have always liked her walking on thin ice.
