In the start of the 1900s zepalins went from germany to america . Now we can have electric moters and helium instead of hydrogey. So who thinks we shud go green and ground the planes and use zepalins most of you have seen the goodyear blimp in america its the same thing but bigger |

"They aren't very fuel efficient compared to modern aircraft apparently"
They're actually a lot more fuel efficient than a plane. They're just not fast and can't fly in bad weather.
The air is part helium part warm air.
I actually worked on an airship built near Bedford. |

Was that the one that Bruce Dickinson was involved in? |

It's cool.
It is One of the most impressive projects I've worked on. |

Long story short . A zepalin is tried and tested and only needs to be fueld up once in its life and todays technology can put solar cells all over the top giving power to the electric motors |

What payload can they carry? How many would you need to carry all passengers and cargo to satisfy 21st Century travel and transportation needs? |

Per person/per mile they aren't.
Add in the time factor for passenger flight and they get even worse so for anything other than advertising in the case of a Blimp or cargo in the case of a regular airship they're a non starter in the real world.
Don't get me wrong, they do have their uses and the technology of them in more recent times has come a long way but when compared to a normal airliner and modern engines they just don't measure up at all.

Yes but as stated above, they're painfully slow and not suitable for all weather flights and transportation.
Electric aircraft are being developed in leaps and bounds, but with limited range at the moment.
Stopping transport and travel is never going to be a realistic option. Alternative technologies to dirty fuel may be? If the oil barons allow it that is? |

Electric aircraft fitted with batteries that occasionally combust. No thank you. |

Unlike jet engines which run on easily combustible fuel? |

You are aware that petrol and kerosene are both combustible surely ?
I assume you have ridden in a motor vehicle which
"occasionally combust."
I'd suggest your point is void !

Actually unless it's atomised it won't catch fire, and certainly won't self combust. Also it can be jettisoned. |

A car can be stopped, and the occupants can get out. Can this be done at 39,000ft? |

Per mile travelled and per flight performed, airships are far more dangerous when comparing percentages.
The fact is you are far more likely to die from eating a strawberry than you are from flying in a passenger airliner.
And yes, 30 years in my profession I know this as fact. |

Do we all go Steam Punk then op?
Just an excuse for me to buy a top hat then with goggles & a feather....!?
Nice thread by the way. Didn't expect to be talking about aeronautical electrics.
Can't see it catching on though...
Isn't the most environmentally friendly aeroplane only 25% efficient any way I read somewhere?
Save the planet & stop going abroad! We have beautiful countryside in England. Get our economy going & let us all get fitter - we don't know what's around the corner....
However, you had me at Zeppelins! |
