On the rag or blob? Painting the town red? The Russians have invaded?
Definetly feeling a redness to my threads today.
What's your favourite euphemism for the 'curse' or are you just 'entertaining the Red Army'? |

I used to work with a woman when I was a lot younger, she was going through menopause and her favourite phrase was "Oh I'm flooding off my feet!"
Followed by "Can you go and buy me some maxi pads, it's like chopped liver"
Was that the kind of thing you wanted OP?

I think it’s good that a man has started this thread.
A period is a natural thing, and life comes from it
We shouldn’t be afraid of taking about it, with men or women.
It’s only blood, and the fact it comes from our uterus does not make it dirty or bad.

Mrs Blobby week or Shark week.

Of course it's natural. They can still be gross though. Speaking as someone who had to clean maternity instruments with a hangover in my early 20s anyway . It's not just blood like if you cut yourself. It's not unclean or anything to be ashamed of but it's also okay to be squicked by it. I've been squicked by my own period related stuff like the clots, mucus plugs, visible veins, etc. Bodies do gross things but that's okay. |

But I'm not making fun. I'm asking what phrases people use for menstruation.
It's about the language, phrases and colloquialisms used.
I could spend a happy few hours researching on the web the etymology and history behind some of them |

Everyone sniggered, but what we really thought was " why are boys so immature?" |

Yes, you’re right, but it’s also great to talk about it like this, whether it’s started by a man or a woman. It’s good that you can be candid about it, and speak truthfully about something so natural and normal. |

He's not exactly looking to get insight into it beyond silly names for it.
That's what makes it strange |

There are over 5000+ euphemisms around the world for menstruation. There has even been an academic study on it. Why?
Make a case for why women shouldn't use a euphemism but actually just call it what it is. |

It does remind me of when Alan Partridge has two lesbians on his chat show asked them "Do these slang names hurt: Lesbos, Les-be-friends, Dykes, Bulldykes, Dick Van Dykes, Spare-Rib-Ticklers, Cat-Flaps, Pussy Footers, Knicker Pickers, Men, Backpackers, Tent-peggers, Trout fishers, Melon Farmers, Kwikfit Fitters, Baggage Handlers, Left Luggage?" |

A couple decide to have a code for sex when talking around their young children. They choose writing as the theme, and so are able to speak freely.
The Father turns to one of the children one day, and asks one of the children to tell mummy that he needs to write a letter and is the typewriter available? Being a dutiful child they deliver the message and return with a reply "Mummy says you can't this evening, as there is a red ribbon in the typewriter".
A few days later, Mummy turn to the child and asks them to tell Daddy that if they still want to type that letter tonight the red ribbon is gone. Being a dutiful child they deliver the message and return with a reply "Daddy says it's okay, he wrote the letter by hand!"

"The mice are in for dinner!
God, that sounds awful!
Never heard that one. A bit bizarre. What exactly are the mice doing?! "
This one may make you regret your thread choices...
'mice' refer to the build up in a woman in medieval times where hygiene was less of a thing and knickers certainly not. A lady would often 'drop a mouse' when the build up got too heavy. It was common even amongst the Queens of England.
Etymology is indeed ace. |
