I can see how it can happen, because in some ways it can go a lot deeper chatting to someone, especially if both are on the same wavelength and there's a strong connection and chemistry and a lot more is revealed than might happen if the relationship were entirely face to face.
I do think that at times it can be "infatuation" or even misconstrued feelings too - but do understand how two people can truly find each other through on-line interaction too.
To use an example from personal experience because I know she won't mind - I've never met Princess Peach, never even spoken to her, and we have nothing more than a platonic relationship, but I can honestly say I have as strong feelings about her as any of my real life friends purely through our interactions here - they're not fake nor false, they're very real and I *know* when we do eventually meet that they will translate right off the written word into reality. |

Indeed.
Also not everyone values the physical, emotional, spiritual, mental, etc the same way.
For some people to gain an attachment (including love) physical can be the lowest value and love can manifest because the value of the other factors are high enough and met to a high degree.
A lot of the time love is mistaken for infatuation as you say. Or love is downplayed/overplayed and they mistake the connection for something its not.
Its not dissimilar to how asexual is a thing, in that sexual attraction does not exist. Or demisexual in that for sexual attraction to be possible there needs to be a romantic connection (or very strong closeness).
Its something that you could not truely ever understand unless having been in such a situation yourself, and is extremely difficult to fully explain if you have. |

Exactly. I feel just the same about you. There is zero doubt in my mind that you have my best interests at heart as I do yours. You've been an absolute rock for me when I've been on my knees wondering how much more shit life can throw my way. You hug me when I'm sad, you high 5 me when I score a goal, you listen when I need an ear and kick my arse when I deserve it, and vice versa. All of it virtual but it has no less meaning than if you were doing it in person.

Spot on - I think often "love" is associated with sex and attraction too, when it doesn't have to be.
"Love" exists on many levels and can take on many forms, both with friends, family and lovers, in person or on-line.

Yes as love can come in many forms.
A friendship connection via communication alone is very possible. There are some people you connect with that you just know, when you do eventually meet, it is like you’ve known each other for years.
Love doesn’t have to be sexual, when it is that is a totally different intensity. |

There are some people on the forums I like a lot. Some I’ve chatted to and others I just observe.
Some people I’ve met that I have genuine affection and lust for.
And one friend I’ve met many many times that is often my first thought in the morning and last thought at night. |

Gosh. 5 years in The Forums and I'm struggling to think who I really got close to, who has had my back, who gets me and who has been interested in me as a person. All guys and all no longer around apart from MM who I think is an incredible guy, a lovely human being and who actually makes an effort with me. Also shout out to Adam because he will always be very special to me even though he's not around.  |
