and if they think thats n

more affordable they are mad, anyway it would never happen, too much resistance as its effectively taking away childrens outside social development. get the feeling its one of those silly things that get aired so as to make other options seem ok

Compulsory boarding education...let em home at end of term only if they pass exams. Then straight into 3 years national service....gets my vote.

And yes we have 4 kids, 2 adults and 2 still at home.

Not sure, I only overheard a brief discussion between 3 so-called experts, on the benefits (or so-called benefits) to all concerned... except the kids!!

I allow myself to think now & again that I have the parenting thing down to a fine art. Then my teenager will throw something in the mix that has me in tears (privately of course) from frustration & I'm back to the drawing board. What is good parenting? A balance I'd say. Of everything.

Do you have children where you need to fork out up to a 1/3 of your income on childcare costs?

Childcare costs are astronomical in this country and the situation needs to be addressed if the govt is to combat the welfare trap a lot of parents find themselves in, where the cost of childcare is higher or equal to what they'd earn if they got themselves a job.

Enabling after school childcare up to 8pm will create jobs as out of hours childcare assistants will be needed to look after these kids plus it will allow parents to take jobs with unsocial hours if that's the only work they can find. My only concern is that safeguards will be put in place to prevent the system being abused by childcare providers and unscrupulous employers - and moonlighting parents too.

Nursery is £5 an hour down here and with minimum wage only being £6.08 it does become a lot of money

Yes the government can pay up to 70% of some peoples child care costs but if your a family earning over a certain amount you won't be eligible for any help

Totally empthasise with you there. We try so hard and despite best efforts it does not always work. For me good parenting is about listening to your children, making sure I understand what they are really saying to me and acting upon it. I believe in firm but not totalitarian boundaries, some neotiobale and some non-negotiable rules at home and a good sense of humour plus respect both ways.

I think a better plan would be to give companies tax incentives to set up work place nurseries where parents can take their kids into work with them and drop them off at the on-site nursery. The roads would be a lot less congested, jobs would be created, work shifts patterns could be introduced and parents could afford childcare because the company subsidises it (because they're getting a tax break for doing so). Obviously, this only applies to pre-school children upto 5 years old, but for some hard-pressed parents out there they simply cannot afford to work if most of what they will earn is swallowed up with childcare costs.

Worked for me, straight to boarding school at the age of ten, fostered out in the holidays, till I was 17, left school on a Friday, went home, for the weekend, started work in London on the Monday, in a flat with my bro in Islington, never looked back!!! So leaving home at the age of 10 does work, though it was a boys boarding school, and its made me pretty inept around women and having sex with them...any sympathy? lol

great well while u do that try being a single parent who isn't on benefits because they choose to show children a work ethic and yes i agree with lots it would be just as easy for me to be on benefits. childcare is a nightmare a constant juggling act so i can work to keep roof over there heads and yes i had them but i didn't decide for there father to feck off and never pay me matience again

Subject of boarding school is a tough one - I was faced with the option of sending mine as their dad was in the Foces. We chatted about it and decided against as we felt we did not have them in the first palce to let somebody else be the main influence in their upbringing. But hey, for some it is a really good option and some kids really do beenfit. I hear what you are saying , TT about the ability to learn about proper relationships... that can be a bit negelected.

i have my own business and im a childcare provider. a lot cheaper than a nursery and more attention is given to children, their education and upbringing by me than a nursery too. too many people don't know about childminders so are assuming ridiculous ideas like this are needed.

What is the longest anybody is likely to leave kids in your experience?

I think it could work.. Most schools around here are already open till 6pm anyway, from 7:45.. It costs

£3.95 for the morning session and £7 for the evening but you can get both for £10.. and includes a snack both morning and evening.

When you consider how much a childminder costs parents to pick up kids from school and then keep them till 6pm then its a good option.

However for me that would still be £150 pw in child care..

As most schools already have after school care around here I dont think it would change much but I know when I had a job that finished at 5:30 I would panic when I left that I wouldnt get to the school in time to pick them up.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

This is already being trialled in some schools. So far it has not proved to be less expensive for parents but has helped with the juggling of finding people to take children from school to after school care of some sort. Schools involved have found it challenging as it means employing two sets of staff in some cases, although some have negotiated additional payments to existing staff to work longer hours.

Some of the free schools are proposing this as their model. It is certainly a way of getting the numbers needed for the school to get the go ahead.

On the other side the cost of work-space would make creating subsidised workplace nurseries completely unrealistic. For large employers that can model how many nursery age children their staff are likely to have then to costs ratios might work out. For most, the additional regulations involved, the staffing and the space requirements would make it impossible.

Many schools buildings are already open for breakfast clubs from 8am till after 7pm already. Not for academic subjects but for child care. Many have crèches on the same footprint too so I don't see any real change just sky running sensationalist stories as per usual.

i think its a good idea if people use it for what its ment for, so they can go to work without the worry of paying a child minder, but it wont be, lazy partents who just want a longer day without their kids will use it

a childminder costs less than nurseries and usually less than after school clubs etc too. they also reduce rates for siblings. a lot of parents should look into childminders as its a lot easier and cheaper, benefits outway schools/nurseries alongside better cost.

also to the questions asked. parents leave children with me usually around 9 hours a day allowing them too and from work. some have been more and then some less too. x
