Why do you drink alcohol?

...or NOT as the case may be.
I know alcohol typically elevates mood because with fewer associations to bother us, we start living less in our heads, and more in the here and now. It's a way to relax after a hard day at work. It's a social or cultural thing to do and we do it because we like the taste.
I'm curious to know the reason why you drink (or don't). What do you get out of it? What's the reason (if any)? If you've quit or tried to stop but can't, then why? |

Neither of us drink much these days.
Speaking for myself, I enjoy the taste of some but also sometimes drink to be social.
I used to drink a lot...either to numb emotions or simply get twatted with friends. |

A rather lame reason but if I’m honest it’s probably more out of habit than anything, I do enjoy the taste and also the effect it has on my mood after a long day, but I’m sure I could find other things that would do the same. |

Younger days drank copious amounts to get d*unk. Now I like the flavour (mostly drink Continental beers). I have a can when cooking a meal - which just feels right. |

That's a really good question that I don't think people ask themselves often.
My friend has a binge drinking problem, she doesn't know when to stop. She has been told she is more interesting when d*unk and took it to heart. She also doesn't like sex and uses these d*unken times to placate her husband
I only drink socially and not to excess. I like that It mainly just makes me a bit more giggly and better at pool Oh and it warms me up in winter! |

I go through phases and have done challenges of giving it up which I don't mind as I'm usually healthier because of it.
I drink socially as it helps my confidence in social situations and if I'm in the house if I've had a bad day/cooking/relaxing I may have a cheeky glass or two.
I also just like the taste of having a drink. Some weeks I find myself having a drink most days, other weeks I don't have a drink at all. Kinda sporadic

"Usually socially, sometimes as a "grown up treat" as I've been surrounded by my kids.
Mr Racer doesn't drink, just can't hack a hangover nowadays! Doesn't drink at all "
Actually I too have found that my hangovers are a lot worse so I tend to to drink to the point of being d*unk as often as my younger days |

I only really drink socially, it’s nice just to let loose sometimes. I like the flavour of my chosen drinks and it’s always easier to tolerate d*unk people when you’ve had a drink yourself.
That being said, I can easily go without and don’t mind being the designated driver if we’re popping to the pub.
Alcohol tends to enhance the mood you’re currently in so should always be avoided if you’re feeling down or angry etc.

Depends on the circumstances for us. We will drink sometimes when cooking at home, or chilling of an eve and share a drink or two. Sometimes it helps us unwind too after a busy day.
Other times we may have a drink to ease nerves of a meet but for us we genuinely like the taste of wine so thats also good as we enjoy a bottle. |

I have a drink on a Friday and Saturday night, unless my kids are visiting then I’ll maybe have a beer or two but try to avoid alcohol generally.
When I’m on my own however it is a bit of a crutch, does help me get through a night and useful at the end of a working week.
I’m hoping when the weather cools down to go running again, that helped in the past as a great way of dealing with stress and some of my personal issues. |

Drinking for me is a social thing, out with friends having a laugh, putting the world to rights.
I don’t drink at home or without company for that reason. The odd time I’ve broke that, it is a slippery slope to too much and drinking for the wrong reason. |

I drink socially and often when I'm bored at home or stressed but it doesn't stop me feeling crappy! After it's worn off, I still feel crappy! I've been drinking to try and control my emotional state over Covid and lockdown but I still feel crappy and the hangovers make me feel awful.
Sorry you are not feeling so good btw noted on another thread. |

I drink as it's a nice way to unwind at the end of the day. I don't drink everyday and only really one or two unless I am out socially. Even then I know my limits as always like to be in control and also don't enjoy hangovers.

A complete non alcoholic drinker here.
I drink to quench my thirst.
It's a bloody expensive way to do that.
I don't like the taste all that much.
I don't like the lack of control.
I prefer to be able to drive whenever I want to.
I prefer to be present with my grandchildren.
I dislike the culture of excusing dependence on alcohol, especially around children.
I find being in the company of someone even tiddly awkward and fearful.
Its just not in my world, it doesn't figure in my life at all |

I don't drink. I don't like the taste of any alcoholic drinks and I don't like feeling out of control.
Being the designated driver usually works quite well for me, for a couple of years at uni I'd drive a friend home from the pub and in return he'd buy all my soft drinks and pay for my parking |

I never drank much wine when I was younger, however on first trip to Spain many moons ago, i tried red wine with my dinner, which just totally blew me away. Here i am 30 odds years in the future, i still have a odd glass with a meal at the weekend, i just loves the taste. Same with beers, i will only drink certain ones for the taste. |

I should go out on my bike of an evening instead of being on the sofa with a glass of something! I feel it's become a bad habit and I need to try and stop. It can be a crutch though, I agree. |

I used to drink.... Now I am tea total. People were surprised as I used to be the beer drinking equivalent of the cookie monster! Lost quite a few friends and a bbit of a beer belly cos I loved Guinness.....
I used to binge drink Friday's/Saturday's. Week in week out. I stopped for health reasons... No, I was not an alcoholic by the way!
Altered a lot of my unhealthy eating habits also. Healthier and more bland. Drugs from another condition affected me. Did not want to be rushed to hospital with an ulcer they could not find.... It means cutting bits out!
Don't miss hangover's one jot or drinking. It no longer dulls my mind!

"I don’t drink because it has a negative effect on my wellbeing, my energy, my digestion, my sleep, my mental health and my libido.
Alcohol free beer is lush (Not as lush as sober sex tho )"
I did read that alcohol is currently classified as a group 1 carcinogen. I know that drinking alcohol is definitely not a healthy thing to do and affects weight, metabolism and sleep. Kudos to you for abstaining. |

I rarely drink, occasional gin or bottle of lager.
I don't like the feeling of being d*unk, or the feeling of being out of control.
And having seen first hand the effects and damage of alcoholism and alchohol dependency can do the stuff is best avoided.

I have a drink when I fancy one, which isn’t very often these days. I went many years without drinking and I don’t need a drink to have a good time or to enhance my socialising in any way.
When I do have a drink I never go beyond tipsy - I can’t take the feeling of it. |

I mostly have a cold beer or a glass of wine etc because I enjoy the taste.
I’ll drink a little bit more socially or to get a bit tipsy.
I really don’t enjoy being properly d*unk. It’s a horrible feeling. |

I only drink when I'm with friends who are drinking though I often stay sober on a night out too. Alcohol is fine in moderation and its night to switch off and let your hair down over a beer every now and then, but it's something I could live without. I much prefer tea or coffee |

This is me too, but usually the odd fruit cider
I've d*unk more since lockdown, which is probably just boredom due to reduction in gym / dancing / socialising etc |

I tend to have the odd cider when it's not as the taste and thirst quenching affect are nice.
With freinds it's nice to have a social drink and reminisce.
I don't tend to go overboard now as I can't deal with hangovers. |

I hardly drink at all. Growing up in a household with d*unk parents put me off because of what I experienced.
I’ll have an occasional glass of wine, beer or something but it’s almost never more than one glass.
Makes me a cheap night out and I can always drive too |

I have seldom drank (in the past 3 years I've probably had 5 nights out with work, team nights out, Christmas parties) and that's it.
Do like a whiskey (1) after work though, but that's only been in the past 3 months or so.
I like whiskey. |

There are so many comments on this thread about not really drinking much.
A few facts I've recently been reading:
By consuming alcohol, you are shrinking your brain, which is associated with late-life dementia. It interferes with the nervous system which makes strokes and cardiac arrests more likely.
If you quit drinking, you will notice within a few weeks that your liver function, blood composition, and immune system have improved drastically. You may also notice that you are less likely to contract the common cold or other infectious diseases.
Me thinks I really really need to cut down!!!
If you are physically hurt, alcohol can make the recovery slower. By quitting, you ensure that your body can combat the hurt. You may also notice that your fertility is higher. |

Got mine under control by substituting 0.5 abv beer. There are some good ones out there.
It’s great to be able to offer people a lift home. To not worry if your need for your alcohol fix will determine where you go out and how you get there or home |

I do a lot of travelling for work and it gets lonely staying away from home, I feel misserable without it.. I guess a couple of drinks at the end of the day isn't to bad?
I've tried staying in watching the TV then turning out the light, but I feel as if I'm missing something, even though each morning when I wake up I often wish I never drank the night before. |

I have a problem with alcohol!
22 years ago I would drink 15 pints a night most nights and more at weekends. On my 40th birthday I drank 4to5 liters of brandy over the night probably 8 hours. Then the penny dropped. I try to do dry spells but it's hard as like the taste and the chilled out feel.
But the dry weeks are good try to do a week if you drink and see how hard it is ? ?

I come from a long line of alcoholics. It killed my Gran, my Uncle and will probably kill my Mum and my first cousin (son of said Uncle) if they don't stop soon.
I looked set to carry on that tradition until I moved away. I used to drink myself into oblivion most weekends, usually with my families approval. However, when I moved I learnt to appreciate food with alcohol and how different foods taste better with different drinks. Now I drink to enhance food and in some social situations, but never get d*unk. |

I wasn't massive drinker in the first place but I got myself so d*unk at a mini social back in Feb I can barely touch alcohol since, I didn't get d*unk once during lockdown and probably had a handful of drinks over that time, I have a bit of addictive personality and I was worried if I drank too much with no work etc, I might develop a problem.
My mother in law got some wine the other day when she came down to see us, I hadn't d*unk in a over a month, didn't really fancy if tbh.

I don't drink. As a Scot, I know I let the side down!
Seriously, my Mother was teetotal, as was her Mum too. My Dad liked the odd pint, but that was it.
My brother was the opposite; he was a prefect at Secondary School in Scotland; he, his fellow prefects + sixthformers and teachers were in the local pub every lunchtime!!
He was an RAF Officer, and what he could put down his neck in the Officers Mess was quite extraordinary. But once he left the RAF, then got married and a baby on the way, he vowed those drinking days were over. He hasn't returned to them at all.
Me? I cannot stand the taste of alcoholic drinks. Ironically, I've worked in Hospitality for decades, hold a Personal Licence, run pubs, bars and Hotels, yet never touched a drop! But I've often been in charge of Wet Stocks, as owners knew I wouldn't drink away the profits!

Depends on how I'm feeling some time it helps me relax, others to get the snake hips moving.
It really depends on the drink too some make me horny aka Malibu, others get me chatty and the best get me dancing but also when times seem hard it helps with the troubles and can help a young boy who was told men dont cry now be a full grown man let a tear out. Like I say I drink for many reasons but I sure as fuck dont need or rely on it much love x |

I read a paper in the Lancet last year that compared a range of substances and ranked them on the harm they do to individuals and the harm they do to society. Alcohol came out top on both counts. Mushrooms were many many times lower. |

I have cut down my drinking a lot over the past 6 weeks I was a almost daily wine drinker.
I'm attempting a healthier lifestyle to lose weight and feel better.
I do feel a lot better and have lost a stone
I have had the odd slip up though where a glass of wine turns into a bottle
I enjoy the feeling of being tipsy and I like the taste.
Being abstinent isn't something I want at all. |

She said she did 2 3ltr bottles of cider daily and was addicted and couldn't understand it.

On a different level and lighter note, I used to look after a gentleman, who at the time was 88, he was active and healthy considering. Once in conversation I asked for any tips, kind of on jest as he had a good sense of humour, about staying healthy at that age.
He raised his glass of whisky, and said this is "uisge beatha" gaelic for whisky, and means water of life |

An interesting thread - I officially gave up booze in February after a few factors. 1. I was trying to loose weight and booze is one of the worst things for impacting that. 2. I had a very heavy session that really put me off the whole notion. 3. After being out at a bar last year on the taxi ride home I got a text from my dad saying my grandfather had passed I hated that I could not jump in the car to be there for my dad. And finally 4 I realised that d*unk people (myself included) become utter knobs and I didn’t want to be around that.
I’ve felt a whole lot better since that day - I do miss a whisky on a Saturday night and no doubt I may return to the odd tipple, but I don’t foresee that any time soon. |

I didn't drink for many years, my ex was abusive, and it was magnified when he'd had a drink. He did become an alcoholic and I wanted and needed my wits about me at all times and not to have my "with it-ness" compromised in any way.
After that was over I would drink twice a year at the staff parties at work.
When I met B he enjoyed a daily glass or 2 of red and I would join him if we went out but not at home (we never went out much tho, so again no chance of it becoming habit or an issue for me)
I have in the last 4 years purchased one bottle of gin and one bottle of baileys for home consumption. That's it.
2 other reasons apart from being put off by the impact it can have on those around you and your own awareness, I just can't justify the cost for something that may make me feel like death and need a few days to recover |

"Alcohol is just another drug.
Yes, should be labelled "poison" really because that's what it does to you!
I agree and I believe it is far more dangerous than any class A narcotic because it is so socially acceptable and legal.
"
There was a thread the other day concerning another "recreational" drug whose name I shall not mention. Every single person on that thread who disparaged that drug and its users had "social drinker" on their profile. People are strange. |

I read a paper in the Lancet last year that compared a range of substances and ranked them on the harm they do to individuals and the harm they do to society. Alcohol came out top on both counts. Mushrooms were many many times lower. "
Professor Nutt did the initial research into this. I heard him speak at the beginning of the year. Very passionate man. His books are well worth a read if his research interests you. |

I really rarely drink.
I don't like the taste of most drinks, I don't like the effect it has on me, don't like the feeling of losing control after having one too many.
Also, my biological dad was a violent alcoholic, an ex had such bad alcohol problems (which she blamed on me when we were together) that she ended up going through a detox and ended up in a hostel for two years, and I've recently seen it destroy a work colleague completely. So no, I don't like it and I don't really understand why people like it. |

I'm a bouncer I'm the guy that has to deal with the pissed up folk who can't say no .
I do know people who are horrible on drink so I gently tell them to think about it , one chance they get then it's try somewhere else mate .
I've known people give booze up , get a bike go jogging and try something else after you've had to explain they hit the ale too hard .
I've seen grown men cry because they know it's not them .
Soooo it's not my responsibility to sort you out , or your family & friends either , go the doctors , read up what you're gorrah do but carrying on getting plastered and becoming obnoxious or violent is worse than a lot of things . |

As a younger man I drank to be social, mind you being in the military it was a very heavy alcohol culture and the peer pressure was hard to say no to..
Fair to say I was kicking the arse out of it and the boss said to me I need to slow down which was her way of saying you are on the cusp of having a problem..
That was some thirty or so years ago, not saying I've never woken up since then and thought fuck my head but for many years now it's something that's more appreciated than necked for the buzz..

Who is saying it "is your responsibility" to sort people out with an alcohol problem? Surely your job is as a security guard, to help keep order, and make sure everyone is safe and has a good time. If a person is acting in a dangerous or unseemly manner, isn't it your job is to warn that person and, if needed, eject them from the venue, not give them counselling? |

"I drink way too much. Makes me happier, masks the huge amount of underlying problems I have in my life. It'll probably kill me. Unless the cigarettes get me first!"
I am sad to read this. Ever thought of asking for help before it's too late? |

I only ever drink in company, and then, not always. For me, it's a shared experience - enjoying the taste of a fine wine over a meal; a cocktail or short on a night out of giggles. I prefer to keep a clear head, particularly for the bedroom. |

Why would you understand you don't see a few thousand people who come into your place of work drinking every weekend |

Southern comfort and lemonade is my drink when I play the piano at formal events ... the improvised jazz can become very improvised as the evening proceeds |

You have absolutely no idea what role I perform in society and what I have to go through. I don't appreciate you saying it was a "shit" reply. I didn't say that I have no sympathy for you as I can imagine it is a difficult job to do. I was merely asking who is telling you that it is your responsibility to counsel the d*unkards? |
