I have been there and it was awful, just know that you did the kindest thing a loving owner could of done at the right time.

So sorry for your loss

It is hard. I have had multiple dogs put down over the years

The hardest was probably the first when I was about 10. I had never not had a dog so it was so strange. She was about the same age as me ( golden lab) and she started having fits so my parents made the hard call

It absolutely kills, it is a genuine bereavement.

I lost a cat 3 weeks ago. I've lost cats, dogs, bunnies etc. Never forget them.

But, when I rescue someone else I feel that I am giving them a good new life. Despite what lays in store

Sorry for your loss.

As most people have said, you really are losing a member of the family.

You get so attached to them.

Been through it twice, very upsetting.

The pain shows how much you loved them. And that's the reason to have a pet of any kind.

Good idea to share on here, 'talking' to people always helps xxx

Someone I know had it happen to them in December. I sent flowers and talked to them about how they should deal with it as a bereavement. And that the other dog should see/sniff the body.

They appreciated it and the second dog was less stressed after she'd been able to see her big bro.

When I lost my cat 3 weeks ago they sent flowers and a sympathy card. They said they'd not appreciated how much I'd gone though over the years with losing pets

Anyone who thinks "it's just a whatever.." does not know animals

Second time I were through it was especially upsetting, the mind was willing but the body wasn't able.

When he does go he will know he has lived well with you

I'm on my 4th dog now, lost 3 so far. Nothing can replace them. But as rescues it's always worth helping new friends through their lives.. That's how I see it anyway

There and to the left a bit

So sorry for your loss OP - losing a pet is heartbreaking because in their time with you they have become as much a part of the family as the humans in it, and you can feel the loss just as much.

Have said goodbye to a few cats and a dog over the years and it never gets easier...thoughts are with you and anyone else who has lost a loved one, pet or otherwise

Thoughts are with you, I lost my girl late last year and every now n then it hits me like a shovel up the head.

Having them put to sleep shows you love them so much you aren't willing to let them suffer. It's a heartbreaking choice, but one done out of pure love

It’s the most heart wrenching and sickening feeling having to make that decision. It happened to me not long ago

My westie boy was nearly 18 and quite poorly at the end. Whilst it was the best for him it left me heart broken that I ended his life..... I stayed with him and it was a peaceful calm, he went in just a few minutes...... I cried all the way home
