There were also more people dying of everyday diseases, poverty and the age expectancy was much lower... Particularly on ocean liners on their modern voyage
Only the very rich were fat

"What's the point of this post? "
My point exactly unless it's something about the Titanic I couldn't give a hoot about the size of someone in the good ole days really the size of people was really the headline news back then |

I'm sorry op but the Titanic was the headline of this year who in the blue hell would care about the size of someone I think someone needs a wank and be done with it in fairness wtf would you care for sure anyone still alive from that time zone is either your great great grandparents or dead or are you into that kind of fetish of fucking corpses or performing sexual acts upon family members naughty naghty I'm literally convinced that some think the brain is located in the penis |

OP.
Some of the people you have met who have verified you have described themselves as "ample".
Not a reflection on them in any way but I would love to know what they think of you starting this thread. |

Oh to be a young slim man in 1912! with any luck I’d make it through WW1 in a couple of years & the Spanish flu that followed it.
OP I’m pretty sure it wasn’t lifestyle, it was wealth or lack of it for many of the population back then.

Today it’s a lifestyle choice.
I would think the lack of processed or fast food had a lot to do with it.
And children would get a sweet as a rare treat.
I recently saw a picture of a Glasgow Workers Swimming Club from the turn of the 20th Century. Every one of them had single figure body fat %. |

"Barnsley won the FA cup as well also 2 years later the WW1 broke out and countless lives were wasted, so on reflection 1912 wasn't a bad year really."
Very good point oh how times have changed where is Barnsley now in the league WW1 was gruesome tbh but doesn't quite stack up to the inhuman affect WW2 had on people an absolute psychopath leading one nation if you were a jew a bug had more rights than you in the eyes of Hitler |

Yup, I'd agree it's very much a lifestyle thing. Plus black and white is more flattering
Rich and processed food less available and manual labour more standard jobs. Those with more money would obviously have the ability for more luxurious food and no need to physically labour.
Makes me think of the film Wall-E. That's our future... |

There was also an incredible amount of racism and homophobia, and women were still unable to vote.
Probably also a lifestyle thing, though. |

I love that film! Im not sure on the OP's motive for the post, but its undoubtedly true if you look at library pictures, and the post above is accurate in my books.
Let's not forget that everyone is human though!! |

Does it matter of his motive though?
It was a conversational opener.
I've logged in after a couple of days and many all over various posts are snippy and self righteous.
If people had merely discussed it it could have been an interesting thread...

You note the a sure lack of any response from the op, right?! He didn't want a discussion. People who want discussion return and engage with others as you have done.
He knows what he is doing and why he is doing it. Light the blue touch paper..... |

Now it’s a lifestyle choice but back then it wasn’t. For most people from the Middle Ages on the diet was:
Breakfast: turnip
Dinner: turnip
Birthday: turnip with a candle in it.
Wasn’t until much later when the food industry came along that they discovered adding sugar made food taste nicer so they didn’t have to bother with expensive ingredients |

"Trying to be controversial the OP is "
Indeed.
Foolish to compare society to that of 100+ years ago - when people were far more likely to be malnourished than obese.
A better period for comparison, I’d have thought, would be the 1950’s - 1970’s - when society (thanks to the NHS) was in better health and better nourished - but wasn’t bombarded with as many high fat fast food options - both in eateries and supermarkets.
Also the prevalence of cars in society means most people walk far less than they used to.
The government is currently trying to tackle obesity - I’m curious to know just how serious they are about it - ie are they serious enough to regulate the number of fast food outlets or have minimum nutritional requirements on the food we eat in the supermarkets?
I’ll be watching that space! |

Yeah but there was also malnourished children. People in workhouses where families were torn apart, as they couldn't afford to feed their own family.
It's too easy to say there was no obesity back in the "good old days". When there was it was a sign of wealth. When you counter in those ideas with people who genuinely understood the meaning of going hungry. It's easy to understand why people became obsessed with food, growing up with having to clear your plate. Add into that the mental health issues associated with food. To say it's a lifestyle choice is an oversimplification. |

Regardless of the era and it's less favourable aspects....... there's so much food for thought ( no pun ... ) in the O.P.'s statement.
A neighbour once pointed out to me ( many years ago ) that there are no fat people in prison camps. |

It is a valid point worth discussing rather than outrage.
Having just discovered the convenience of the Just Eat app over lockdown I’m fixing to make a few changes to my lifestyle.
It’s never been easier to access services that make our life easier but less active. |
