The definitive list: Horror films
Jump to: Newest in thread
A carefully arranged social on Saturday included a discussion of a mutual love of the horror genre.
So, over to you forumites for your input of the creepiest, most blood curdling, scaring your pants off horror films.
I'm looking for films that have a good story, a great soundtrack or sound score, a twist or two but, importantly, I want films that I'm likely to want to watch more than once or twice.
My (limited) list:
Eraserhead 1977
Cronos (La invención de Cronos 1993)
The Shining 1980
Phantasm 1979
The cabin in the Woods 2011
The Crazies 1973

"The original IT
Nosferatu
The original Poltergeist
Misery "
The original Poltergeist scared the beejesus out of me. Especially when you have a clown in your bedroom and you wake up with it staring at you... |

Night of the Demon 1957 (famous as one of the lines is in a Kate Bush song ‘it’s in the trees, it’s coming’ )
Psycho (you’ll never shower again)
Jaws (you’ll never go into the sea again)
Alien (personal favourite is horror sci if) so ...
Event Horizon (also Hello to Jason Isaacs)
Audition (starts off ok ...then )
Under the Skin (some scenes truly horrifying)
Add some light relief
An American Werewolf in London
Scream
Shaun of the Dead
Dusk till Dawn
Can’t be a list without Zombies from the master
George A. Romero
Dawn of the Dead and
The Crazies
I could go on ...

Not very well known but a film called Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon is an awesome movie. It’s a slasher paying homage to movies like Friday the 13th and Halloween. It’s filmed from the prospective of the killer though. Shows him prepping for the killing spree etc, really clever. |

"The Taking of Deborah Logan
Train to Busan
Rec (pretty much all of them tbh)
Get Out
Tucker and Dale Vs Evil
Include The Host with Train of Busan"
I love The Host! Absolutely brilliant. Also, it's sort of horror (although not gore really), The Orphanage. |

Missin’ Yo’ Kissin’ |
Lost Boys (1987) - Great 80's film & great sound track in my opinion....
INXS & Jimmy Barnes; Lou Gramm (Foreigner); Roger Daltry - (Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me - Awesome);Echo & The Bunny Men; Gerrard McMann; Eddie and the Tide; Tim Capello -especially like "I Still Believe!Love the dirty sax at the beginning and sax,sax & more sax through the track), Mummy Calls; Thomas Newmann.
The Crowe (1994) - Revenge from beyond the grave.... That had a good sound track to it - The Cure;Nine Inch Nails; The Jesus & Mary Chain; Stone Temple Pilots. |

Second shout for the classic Night if the Demon.
I am a big Lovecraft and cosmic horror fan but directors have struggled to convey that on the big screen. However two recent films are excellent, namely The Void and Colour Out if6 Space.
The Thing is a classic in its own right but could be loosely clsssed as cosmic horror, as well as Hellboy (btw I think I am one of the few people who thought the recent Hellboy remake was actually ok). |

Dark Skies - very creepy. Also try The Fog (original) or Outpost for chills.
The Hills Have Eyes/Wrong Turn if you like visceral stuff.
Underworld Evolution if you fancy a gothy action flick.
The Devil Rides Out is not scary but really fun! An old Hammer classic with Christopher Lee vs. satanists!
I'm a huge Lovecraft fan, but his works don't translate well to film imo. Not that many people have tried! |

Hmm.
Favourite serial killer film - the original Halloween.
Favourite creature feature - American Werewolf In London.
Favourite haunted house flick - The Others or The Innocents.
Favourite Stephen King - Carrie. Though I think Christine's the closest adaptation.
Favourite comedy (ish) - From Dusk Til Dawn.
All round favourite - Alien. |

As soon as I read Cabin in the Woods was on your list I shook my head in shame.
However, to answer your question, The conjuring movies are good modern day horrors.
IT was shit, told more jokes than gave scares |

Prefer to share love at times like these but having watched (too) many over years and seen Jump scares aplenty, predictable story arc and schlock etc One stands out recently - Bone Tomahawk (2015) Brilliant acting, unpredictable with a hard reality that uses no telegraphing of what is to come. Western into...something else a lot more than gore. Last 45 mins is a is more "behind" than "edge" of seat. Cult classic status beckons.
Don't watch it, go for something cheery instead

"Martyrs
Raw
Teeth
The Blob (1988)
The Fly (Cronenberg)
Near Dark
"
I wouldn't be putting martyrs in there, martyrs, frontiers, switchblade romance(all French BTW) are brutal but I'd class them more psychological thriller with blood than horror, but then again what do I know |

The Crazies 1973
"
Love a good horror, even some of the ones that make you laugh with how poor the special effects are.
John carpenters the thing for example.
Or any of the evil dead’s (number 2 was best)
Braindead
Bad taste
All classics |

"Lots of the above are great,
Autopsy of Jane Doe was really good.
Near Dark is a firm favourite.
Worked on Event Horizon and really like it.
How about Devils Rejects.?
"
Love event horizon, and so did Danny Boyle I reckon, as sunshine seems to be awfully similar |

Oh, they do. I've stayed in a few!
Wasn't keen on Lost Boys. It's just The Goonies for people that like Joy Division. |

"Martyrs is the most upsetting and unsettling film we've seen.
You need a good Disney film and a cuddle after it.
Try Irreversible..
Although I agree Martyrs is very extreme for extreme cinema "
Irreversible is just fucking mental |
