Been out for lunch with my mum and step dad as hes 70 today. Hes also decided to retire this week (but will help out if they need an extra pair of hands)
My mum is 67 and as yet has no plans to retire. I know they will both end up doing volutary work.
He has an allotment and there always going on walking holidays.
I remember my grandma being 70 and she was old, every one was old at 70 in those days. Im 47 and forget thinking im around 35.
Not sure what the right age is but i think its 73 for a man and 78 for a woman to live and thats in the last 20 years.
So in around 20 years time we will have a lot of spritly 80 year olds running around.
Now after ive typed all that iwas wondering, places like saga and homes for the eldery start at 50, so i could actually live in elderly accomodation in three years time.
So all these old age things that start at 50 do you think it should change to at least 60 |

I am 47, not far from being 50, and do feel my age whenever my body is in pain due to excessive strain.
It takes longer for me to recover from muscle strains as I grow older.

I was the youngest in my year at school and age has just never worried me. I like to keep as fit as I can, look after myself without being too anal about it and enjoy life. Hopefully still being part of the scene for many years to come and also no intention of ever retiring completely as I love some parts of my work. So bottom line : I believe and active life and mind keep you fit in their own right. |

"Can you please bog off with ur plans for altering what is 'elderly' til I am 55 and settled in my new build low rent apartment in an over 55's complex !" Elderly is a term that we take on ourselves as and when WE see fit lol... so I dont intend to do that for a few decades yet |

Funny i was thinking about this at my local SW meeting, a woman who looked frail revealed her age at 75 and got a round of applause for loosing 2 lb or something because of her age, now my grandma is only 2 years behind her and still plays tennis, would out run me (if i ever tried) and still attends yoga/line dancing classes. It got me thinking about how young my grandma still acts and how she dresses compared to the lady who was sat infront of me.
I really have no idea how old id classify as 'old' now, despite working with the elderly. |

Me too, still enjoy the same things but recovery time is the pay-off
I'm house searching at the moment and saw one I liked that has 4 floors...last night climbing my one flight of stairs to go to bed I was thinking - Jesus, can I really do this 4 times over every time I need to pee? lol! |

"The question was not when we see ourselves eldery but society. ie saga is for over 50's and over 50/55 houses. Should it rise in keeping with people being younger for far longer"
Ah, sorry I misread your original post. I guess we should as the time people are in retirements is longer than it was originally it would be a reflection of what happens in real life. Lets face it "midlife" used to refer to age 40 not all that long ago. |

Keep fit, stay active, enjoy life! My mantra, I'm 46 and yes I ache after a long day or hard work out. It's all worth it though, it keeps age at bay and makes it easier to cope with. I will not retire to a chair! Only when I'm ready. |

This thread made me think of when we developed a site and built some OAP bungalows, oops i mean Senior Citizens.
Was showing a couple around one house and the woman said "ooh look, extra wide patio doors, is that so we get more sunlight.?"
I said "No, it's so we can back the hearse in."
I thought for one awful moment we were gonna need one there and then. |

They used to say you were getting old when the Police Sargeants looked young.
So I am a bit worried as a Superintendant I saw last week looked positively schoolboyish ... |
