What did you want to be? Did anyone ever get useful advice from a careers teacher?
Did you get to do your dream and did it work out?
This was inspired by the Tim Minchin song “When I grow up” which is hauntingly beautiful. I knew I would be stronger when I grew up, but as he says: strong enough to carry all the things you need to carry when you’re grown up? Think I underestimated that! |

For years I wanted to be a teacher...can't think of much worse now!
Also dreamt of being a professional singer, not famous but singing for my supper as it were.
I'm not a singer either.... |

I never knew it was my dream , but I followed a career path that is was the only thing I wanted to be with enthusiasm. it’s only now I look back and think , yes I did live my dream and still do .. Not the most romantic of dreams in many ways .. I do however still enjoy it massively .. |

I also would have liked to become an elite Swimmer, but didn’t have the height or size of hands and feet to do that. I stopped growing by the time I was 14 so my height advantage as an early developer soon disappeared. My desire to be a priest disappeared at a very young age when I discovered I really liked girls. I got virtually no useful career advice in school and basically did what my Dad thought would be best for me with a nod to my favourite science subject.
I was much better at languages and English than the sciences but was told I’d not get a decent job with an arts degree so do Engineering. I studied Maths, Physics and Chemistry to A Level, lost interest in them as I discovered a passion for more spiritual pursuits and scraped enough marks to study Engineering. My interest in the spiritual waned as the sexual took over in my years at Uni. Again I scraped through my degree through a lack of aptitude in complex Maths and a very uninspiring approach to lecturing employed at the Uni. It did open the door though to a career than began in Engineering but soon evolved into working with people to make things better. As I developed this aspect of work I was increasingly able to integrate things I was truly passionate about into my work and continue to do that. |
