Looking after yourself

North East Scotland, mostly

I think it's fair to say we've all been under a bit of pressure lately. Some people have been working too much, others want to work more; some people are desperate for companionship, others desperate for space; some people fear the reopening of our lives whilst others welcome it.

What do you do to look after yourself, when times are tough? Beyond "a face mask and an early night"?

Are you attuned to your own needs? Do you notice when things are starting to get on top of you, or does it creep up?

How have you adapted if you can't use your regular "go to" tools because of the pandemic i.e. gym, holiday etc.?

Please, share away

Mrs TMN x

I do practise mindfulness and yoga. Once a month I go through a period of feeling horrible, rageful and sad (nothing to do with hormones or my period) when that happens I just lock myself away with Netflix and understand that it's not forever.

I've got various self care techniques. Skincare and makeup, reading, singing. It will be exercise when I'm feeling better. I recently found a DIY facial massage tutorial when I was feeling particularly tense.

Meditation is always an important go to, progressive muscle relaxation.

Getting a sense of perspective.

Talking to friends, either sharing problems or laughing over nothing. Sometimes they remind you of bits and pieces to help you cope.

Achieving things, learning things.

I divide my strategies into wallow, distract, and solve.

Changing space. Environment. Seeing an old friend. Cooking new dish. Breaking a pattern.

I am no gym bunny but been missing my swimming. Luckily i have two dogs who keep me active as we walk miles daily. Also been working longer hours and on my feet all night and probably walk quite a few miles there too over the 12hr shift.

A nice daily walk, some exercises and weights. Don't forget to exercise the brain as well. Self wellbeing is important at this time.

Chat to others.

Swing, you always inspire me to keep working on myself. You seem so organised and determined! I've found myself swinging between being full of energy and ideas to the complete opposite, lethargic and feeling sorry for myself. Difficult to maintain momentum with anything.

I just go for a walk get some fresh air, or go for a nice drive with the music loud, makes me feel alot better for it.

Whenever I feel antsy about anything, I take myself off to a secluded part of the beach and meditate to the sound of the sea, breathe it all away and recentre myself

Just running and cycling; although that was tough because I could only do the same “close to home routes”. I did set up a local (socially distanced running and cycling group to help people new to it, and that helped.

Music... listening to it or trying to play it ...climb local mountain...or sometimes just go to sleep... totally depends on everything timewise.

Writing, dancing, going for walk or calling a friend. Sometimes just having a really good cry helps.

I know you said early night and were looking for other suggestions, but sleep is kinda at the centre of it really as far as I'm concerned. I don't think ppl always appreciate the importance of decent sleep and avoiding burn out in keeping a healthy mind....

Other than that, puppies and kids and real friends who actually know you are also awesome reality checks....
