The right place |
How do you view the world? What do the type of stories you find most appealing say about you?
Are you attracted towards art (books, films, stories) where problems get solved by hero figures (not necessarily super heros) and there’s a happy ending?
Or do you prefer stories that acknowledge the complexity and nuance of life. That thing and people are rarely All good or All bad? Do you prefer to hold darkness and light in tension?
Either way what do you think it says about your psychological make up? |

I like all different things, but they all seem to have the same undertone.
Justice of sorts.
Whether that's the couple finally getting together and having their happy ever after or the story of a killer coming to light, and you find out they've killed yes, but those who's lives they've taken were child murderers or suchlike.

What an interesting set of questions!
I really dislike tension in a novel, I actively avoid thrillers of anything that's going to involve huge tragedy of reflect terrible historical events. I prefer books that relate the story of a life situation, showing how characters react to different events, what that means for their lives and family situations. I also read a fair bit of history especially around Elizabeth 1st.
I have no idea what this says about me though. |

I really dislike tension in a novel, I actively avoid thrillers of anything that's going to involve huge tragedy of reflect terrible historical events. I prefer books that relate the story of a life situation, showing how characters react to different events, what that means for their lives and family situations. I also read a fair bit of history especially around Elizabeth 1st.

I’m glad you thought so!
I recognise that I like a bit of escapism sometimes but ultimately those stories with nice happy endings (no! Not those happy endings!) don’t resonate in the way more complex ones do.
I have a friend that loves neat and tidy plots and I’ve noticed a degree of magical thinking in real life. |

I enjoy twisted imperfect worlds and characters who are flawed yet aspire to recognise who they are.
Mainly factual though weird fiction fascinates me.
Perhaps I find comfort in reading about other flawed types? |

For me, it very much depends on how I'm feeling.
Sometimes I'll want to relate to something.
Sometimes I'll want to learn something.
Sometimes I'll just want an escape.
I generally enjoy being made to feel uncomfortable, thought provoking books and documentaries are a favourite.
As for my view of the world? I think we live on a beautiful planet that's being destroyed by assholes. Thankfully a few decent people give me hope that maybe one day people will be better. We have dogs at least

I like the stories that relate to real life more than simple fantasy most of the time, albeit I do enjoy some escapism too. Multi-level stories with strong psychological, political, philosophical or spiritual themes that engage me mentally and emotionally are my favourites. I enjoy exploring the profundity of human experience and enjoy listening to and reading Such stories.
I am looking forward to the film release of a powerfully poignant story from the life of one of my biggest philosophical influences, Ken Wilber, later this year or early next. It’s release has been delayed due to Covid-19. I read his book of the same name about 14 years ago and cried buckets. I imagine the film will affect me similarly. |

I do enjoy archetypal stories, from good overcoming evil, or the downtrodden rising up and all those basic themes. But I do prefer to see a bit more depth in a story, the characters and plots, not all just clear cut black and white.
I find myself reading a lot of non fiction at the moment though, maybe be classed as pseudo science but interesting none the less  |

Yes he has integrated it into his Integral Theory over recent years. His work has fascinated me since the mid 90’s. Integrating Spiral Dynamics into it has made it more accessible in my view.
I’ll keep you posted on Grace and Grit as I’m not sure yet how it will be released. |

I used to read a lot of fiction starting with horror and then moving into more 'literary' territory.
In recent years I've shifted from fiction (I even stopped reading books altogether for awhile) to non-fiction (mainly memoir/biography, travel and history).
For me it's not so much the content of the book but the quality of the writing which attracts me.
For fiction I stick mostly to looking at Penguin Modern Classics (currently reading The Monkey Wrench Gang) and European (one of my recent favourites has been The Kingdom by Emmanuel Carrère) writing.
I particularly enjoy stumbling upon a book I've never heard of - so I don't have a 'must read' list.
History fascinates me (not any particular era - once again quality of writing is more important) - as I don't think you can really 'see' an event until many years later and the way it can be interpreted from many different angles.
Similarly I enjoy documentaries now more than movies.
What it all says about me? I'll let others decide at this moment. |

I’m not one for female fiction, romance, etc
I get lost in a thriller, whether it be political, historical or who done it.
Love historical reads, from ancient history through to 1970s learn about their ways, culture, certain moments of time. If a writer can combine the two I’m hooked.
My true passion lies in the mind, why people do what they do, the choices they make, why they behave outside the ‘norm’ |
