I went to Asda on Sunday (my life is soooo rock and roll!), and there was a member of staff holding a big cardboard pointy finger on a pole.
Her job was to spot which queue was the shortest and then stand there with said cardboard pointy finger held aloft to alert shoppers.
I have no life and as such was fascinated!!

There's nothing worse than joining a short queues and then find the person has a damaged item/the wrong item/they've forgotten something/left purse or wallet in car/buying lots of things that won;t scan/...

...but then there's the alternative of self service checkouts and the constant nightmare of the dreaded 'unexpected item in bagging area' issue.
....food shopping is fraught with dangers from all angles these days! |

At passport control there are always several windows unstaffed, yet always a person there at the head of the queue whose job it is to point you to the free window, just in case you can't work that out for yourself.
Next time I'm there I will certainly suggest the implementation of a Big Pointy Finger policy. |

Excellent thread OP....we have the same in our local ASDA .....girl with pointy finger on a stick, trotting up and down pointing at queue with fewest people....£6.47 an hour she gets. We always use the self service checkouts, though god only knows why...'please place the item in the bag'...I have!...your scales are not finely tuned enough to detect that I have purchased a packet of low fat, low sugar, low salt crisps and put them in the same bag as my black pudding!....'unexpected item in bagging area'...no its not unexpected....I expected it to be their because I have just scanned it and put it there!!..Trying to find challottes on the 'loose vegetables' to weigh!....just put it with the onions for fks sake!....Tell you what, I'll scan my whiskey through...fatal mistake that is!...sirens blaring, red light at the top of my checkout flashing, roller shutter doors come crashing down as an 86 year old security guard comes tottering over....I've only picked up the only bottle of Grouse without a security tag!...bedlam ensues, with the pointy finger girl now coming to age verify me and swipe her magic card across the scanner to let me resume scanning my groceries. Finally packed, head for the exit to find the entire Derby police force equipped with gattling guns and Apache helicopter dispersing!..Alarm sounds on the way out!....now what?....Aforementioned security guard, again comes limping over, bag search!.....turns out a cut price cadbury cream egg that had been displayed with 6 million others on a shelf big enough to barely contain a matchbox had fallen into a bag during the checkout fiasco!.....the joys! |
