Times are hard for some. Post your best money saving tips, I'll start.

A large Costa coffee fits in to a regular cup in the self dispensing machines, saves about 40p a cup.

Look at your bank statements and consider if all those direct debit outgoings are value for money.

The fixed penalty notice for theft would probably outweigh the saving

When yearly gym memberships come up for renewal, give notice on them. I have consistently been given a better deal to renew after I've given notice.

When your phone contract is coming to an end, shop around for SIM only deals and keep your phone. There are some fabulous deals out there. I pay £5 a month for 8 gig and unlimited texts and and data. my daughter's comes to just over £8 and she has 30 gig and unlimited social media Plus unlimited calls and texts.

Dry your clothes on one of those wire clothes dryer things it will save you quite a bit from not using a tumble dryer in the long run

I'm sorry I made a mistake regarding my daughter's phone contract in my above post she actually gets 6 gig of data unlimited texts and minutes and unlimited social media.

a few people have messaged me privately asking about it. So here's the details

It's with a company called voxi who uses the Vodafone network, we went through TopCashback so we actually pay £10 a month but through TopCashback got £15 back. It is still available if you go to TopCashback and look at SIM only with Voxi. It works out an effective cost of approximately £8.60

Sorry for my earlier mistake

Check you sky bill regularly, I went out of the special offer period and the bill doubled. Evidently they only have to tell you they are increasing the bill when you have a broad band deal as well.

They did offer me a broad band deal of ZEROmbps to 50mbps. I had to decline their generous offer of me paying them for no broadband.

Use camelcamelcamel before buying anything pricy on amazon, it will show if it's been cheaper and you can sign up for alerts when price drops.

Do not autoextend contracts, you are very likely to be better off swapping Internet or insurance providers, especially if you use sites like topcashback.

A large Costa coffee fits in to a regular cup in the self dispensing machines, saves about 40p a cup.

That’s not a money saving tip, it’s theft

You may call it theft? I call it lack of training on the machine, not my fault

No it is theft. You are declaring to the cashier that you have a medium but really have a large. No emoji changes that "

Whilst I dont condone stealing.

Costa coffe is own by a cola....you know that billion dollar businesses.

Costa coffees profit margins are over 90% per cup. They can afford to loose 50ml of coffee.

If there is that much room left in the medium cup the fuckers are robbing you first and thats before we talk prices. How much extra does the large cost for 50ml extra?

Central

Always check for potential cashback before purchasing anything. This includes retailers but also insurance, any financial products, travel, flights, accommodation and a lot more besides. Some things can be purchased online and picked up in store, still earning cashback.

The 2 most credible and popular sites are topcashback and quidco. If you know anyone who uses 1, they can explain it and may get a referral bonus. I've had c. £2-3,000 paid back. Sure, we can buy less - and not buying stuff we don't need is the most intelligent thing we can do - but there will be things we do have to buy etc.

Another tip is to make do with Freeview for television and checking if you can save money with occasional purchases via other viewing options, compared to expensive TV packages.

Repairing things yourself or exchanging your skills with others, if they can help you repair or share skills you don't have. Repairing and extending the life of goods is great for the planet and our finances.

Turn things off, lights, televisions etc. Cool from scratch. Walk when it's possible. Always call your insurance company and ask if they can give you a better price than their renewal quote. Call your credit card company every year ask to speak to the loyalty department and ask them to review your interest rate. Wear warm stuff indoors in winter.

My great grandmother used to stay in bed all day with the kids when there wasn't enough money to buy food. That would have been around 1910.

If you have to buy stuff from small independent shops, decode how much you want to pay , put that amount of of cash into their hand take the item and start walking out the shop, they will rarely refuse the trade and give you the cash back

That’s not true , currency doesn’t depreciate as such , but when you are thinking about putting it pitiful things like ISA , factor in inflation and you will realise it’s much better to buy good wine and jewellery

Don't get you car breakdown on automatic renewal or lock yourself into a deal. Let it expire for a couple of days so you can get a quote as a new customer. I saved £160 on my AA this year

^ This

I joined the AA a year ago on a special rate (approx £15 per month) for their top level cover.

When my renewal letter arrived it was £45 per month

I cancelled it, let it expire then joined again via a discount site. Monthly amount now £16

No one trained me to use the machine? Same with self check outs at the supermarket, if they want it done right then serve me themselves, or provide training cos it ain't theft its a mistake.

Fiat currency. You're money in and of itself is worthless. It is only worth what you can purchase with it (purchasing power).

£100 today is worth less than 5 years ago (you can buy less with it) - inflation.

Why you now see billionaires more rather than millionaires. A million pounds is not that much money nowdays - what you can purchase with it is less. Just leaving your money in the bank means it's purchasing power decreases over time.

One of the first business lessons I learned - leverage low interest credit whenever you can to acquire appreciating assets, while some are looking to pay off mortgages I’d be looking to remortgage right now and build additional rooms. The cost of adding that room in 5 years will be more (inflation) plus you have 5 years of capital gain and all time low interest rates. But never ever remortgage for a new kitchen or bathroom , that’s a cost and in 5 years will lose 100% of its value

That said there is nothing wrong with being careful.

And having not had it in our early lives, we appreciate what we have now.

Enjoy it while you can.
