Is it really pervy to offer a photography session simply because you enjoy doing it yourself? Some of the photos on here are awful, I have a skill I would love to share for free as long as location, time etc works.

You can try, I can’t see why some people wouldn’t take you up on it.

You can offer but be prepared to show off some of your work. There's plenty of threads with "photographers" offering to take pictures for "nothing in return"

We have heard alot of scary stories about this.

Why would you trust a stranger to take naked pictures? Surely open to abuse.

I wouldn't trust a sausage to take any pics of me on here. They would probably end up being shared and picked to pieces. I think that's your problem Op, you can't trust anyone on here.

I can only see two photos on your profile but neither of them are any better than those “awful”

ones you mention.

Presumably you have others that showcase your “skill” more appropriately?

Most of the ones who say they are photographers rarely have a decent portfolio. Or in one case were pictures taken from the internet.

To be honest I’d love to go out and take pictures of people. Simply because I love playing with pictures. I’ve done a bit and really enjoy it. Mine mostly taken on my phone with timer, but I do when I have time like getting the camera out. Cost is a big barrier to getting proper pics done but can be well worth it, you see yourself differently.

The question about this or indeed with any photographer is who owns the images and what's to stop them being published or even sold by the photographer. Why would anyone let some stranger take pics and leave themselves open.

I won a competition to do a boudoir photos hoot at a legitimate studio at the end of last year, having had a tough year it was certainly an empowering experience.

A full set of photographs from the shoot on a USB was £600.

Creativity aside, this is the core of the problem. Without a prexisting contract, pretty much it is the person who presses the button who owns it. The subject is just a model. Yep you can argue the toss but unless money changes hands around a rock solid contract you are going nowhere. If you have done this already your only hope is recent laws around revenge porn, but if you had no relationship, you cant use it. Our advice - don't go there.

Mostly correct. As a working professional, let me help everybody out, as these issues are often misunderstood.

By default, copyright belongs to the photographer, not the model. The photographer is defined as the person who pressed the button. By way of legally binding contract, this copyright can be transferred to another party (e.g., the model or a business) before or after.

Ownership of copyright does not grant usage rights. So, you may own the copyright to the photo, but you don't automatically own the right to publish or reuse the image anywhere. That is negotiable in the model or property release form. Again, this is legally binding, and agreed between parties. While the model or business may have copies of the image, their own use of said image is also limited to what was agreed. Unless otherwise agreed, you have no rights to duplicate the image.

Money is not the aggregator of copyright or usage rights. Unless otherwise negotiated, they are set to defaults in law.

And on to photography in general....

Beware of a "photographer" who bigs up the equipment they use as a major selling point. Depending on what you want to shoot, and the final usage, a high quality smartphone can be sufficient. A key differentiator is lighting, and control of lighting. If you are putting yourself out there as a photographer, I expect you already have full mastery of any equipment used. People skills are paramount, then your photographic skills.

I wouldn't expect to see a portfolio here, but I would expect to see samples.

"A full set of photographs from the shoot on a USB was £600. "

Did you get this as your "prize" or were you given one or two images with a follow on offer of £600 for the lot?

There is a popular, suspect sales tactic used by lots of studios where the lure customers in for a free or very low cost photo shoot, and then upset a more expensive package.

This was a professional studio, with 3 rooms set up for having photographs taken in plus you got a makeover prior to the shoot too. I can understand why they have to charge those prices, it's just unfortunate it's out of the price range of most people.

Yes, I fully understand the costs involved. Rather than operate my own studio, I just hire one when and where it is required. But it costs money to open the doors, turn the lights on, and equip it. Make up artists have to be paid. Photographers have to be paid. Consumables have to be paid for. Doing things properly costs money. So I'm not passing any judgement on the price, just questioning the method.

Often, after the shoot there is a high-pressure sale involved, with some studios even having finance agreements available help with the purchase.

Free photoshoots / make overs don't always come with free portfolios.

So long as you were aware of the costs BEFORE you set foot inside, that's fair enough. Then, it's their risk that they can produce a package sufficiently compelling for you to sign on the line...

I think you'd look fabulous in a boudoir style shoot anyhow. What's on show on your profile is lovely.

Oh god the fun police are out. Firstly.. try taking a selfie with 2kg of camera and no way to light meter correctly etc.. secondly.. I’m not selling anything (so that’s a free £600 hey)

And if people were really worried, they could supply the flash card and I can leave it with them.

As someone said way above.. it’s about trust.. and you can’t trust many on here.

As an exhibitionist there is nothing more exciting than a photographer with an 'eye' and lighting...doesn't matter about the equipment.. You can achieve amazing things if you have an aptitude for framing, angles and of course lighting

I find it weird that prople are so suspicious?

But what about if your camera has a second card slot? A lot of people wouldn't be aware of that.

Personally, I wouldn't trust anybody on here enough to use them as a photographer unless I knew them very well - I'd prefer to hire a studio and take them myself, which also lets me exercise my own creativity.

Nope, don't use them, though I'm sure I have on somewhere for my GoPro's. I was asking if you are capable of taking a self portrait? There are lots of ways to do so. You suggested however that it wasn't possible for you. Just wondering why?

I have a related qualification. A good camera. Decent editing skills. But I've mostly shot landscapes and travel photography previously.

So I would never ask anyone on here until I'd be be able to show them some model shots.

I'm in a local photography club where I was going to get that model experience through group shoots....then we locked down

So I wouldn't expect people to let me shoot them unless I had a decent portfolio.

Usually yes. Although fabs is hardly a photograph competition. Reading above some seem cool where as other would rather pay. So if you wanted to you probably could and learn as you go.

I believe a portrait should capture someone in their natural surrounding, it should tell the story of who they are and how they arrived here. It is certainly not a selfie or a photograph of self. I don’t believe someone can truly tell that story of them self.. I find self portrait almost a conflicting statement.. you can never truly see yourself, therefore how can you attempt to capture it...

Perspective of one individual and I’m sure there are many who disagree and that in fact the one time you can capture the essence of an individual is what they are totally at ease perhaps on their own. It’s well known that we all portray a certain way in particular environments and to particular people.

The person who has best insight to the self is the self...as long as you are prepared to look. As a photographer you are shown a version. You are privileged to be a part of that individuals journey.

Perspective gained from others is invaluable in developing ideas and most certainly not a conversation too high brow for here. Arrogance like that as a photographer must serve you well.

"To be honest I’d love to go out and take pictures of people. Simply because I love playing with pictures. I’ve done a bit and really enjoy it. Mine mostly taken on my phone with timer, but I do when I have time like getting the camera out. Cost is a big barrier to getting proper pics done but can be well worth it, you see yourself differently."

No need for a photographer there, we prefer pics on profiles where they haven’t been done by a pro.

We are the same and enjoy taking pics so having a photographer there would spoil it for us.

Nothing you have stated leads me to believe this requires a photographer. This can easily be done by oneself. If one is more at ease this way we push ourselves stripped of self consciousness we strive to do something knowing it’s I observed thus pushing boundaries that unlikely would otherwise be crossed.

Being a photographer does not mean you can and will do this of course a potential is there not a guarantee

The smartphone is absolutely killing the photographic equipment industry, and also business of photographers. Many people within the photography industry are in complete denial about this, which will hasten their end.

Smartphones do not produce better quality, or even as good quality as even a low end dSLR or mirrorless camera. They are not more capable, or better ergonomically. A lot of people in the photographic community think this gives them the edge. It doesn't.

Smartphones are more convenient, self contained, very connected and, crucially, always with you. You can share an image, post it online, edit it, straight away without the use of a third party computer. They are not the best quality, but for enough people, the quality is good enough. They are sufficient. And for most people, the better quality and flexibility available with a dedicated camera system does not justify the cost, bulk and complexity involved.

People are interested in pictures, not the equipment, or process.

Beware of spin. iPhones may well be used, but there is a lot of additional software and equipment used, such as lenses, 4K recorders, audio etc, without mentioning lighting. Then, the data stream is graded, processed, etc...

I get your point about not wishing to be influenced, but a lot of what you say comes across as arty bollox. Yes, there are rules, yes they can be broken. But it's knowing when, and how, to break them that matters. Portrature is huge subject in it's own right, and there is no right or wrong here.

You may have a view on "selfies", and you may not like them (not a huge fan personally) but that in no way shape or form dismisses there validity as a type of portraiture.

However, earlier you suggested it wasn't possible for you to do a self portrait, and cited technical reasons. YOu've not yet answered what those technical reasons are that prevent you from doing a self portrait?

I would decline your offer OP. There are two photographers on another site, with massive following, that suit my style and I'm still umming and arring about a shoot.

I enjoy taking my own and I've taken a few for others, which I agree is enjoyable. There's a huge amount of trust required, that the vast majority of people are not prepared to take.

"Have a think what they could be. Perhaps 85mm at arms length?"

I wasn't aware that a self (a self portrait) had to be taken at arms length? Mount or place a camera somewhere, compose set exposure and prefocus the shot, trigger the camera remotely or by self timer, or both... I can think of lots of ways to solve the issue. You say you can't do it. Please, do explain why, as a photographer you can't (not won't) do it?

"I would decline your offer OP. There are two photographers on another site, with massive following, that suit my style and I'm still umming and arring about a shoot.

I enjoy taking my own and I've taken a few for others, which I agree is enjoyable. There's a huge amount of trust required, that the vast majority of people are not prepared to take."

It’s not necessarily an offer. More a topic of conversation. It all stems from trust more than anything else. I agree.

"Please explain why you need me to explain first. "

What the hell, okay.

1. You stake a claim as to being a skilled photographer.

2. You are touting your services on here as a photographer.

3. You claim that it is technically not possible for you to take a self portrait. Call it a selfie if you like.

Given all of the above, I was wondering why a person who claims to be a skilled photographer with sufficient confidence to offer their services to other people, is saying they are technically unable to take a self portrait.

Again, for clarity UNABLE rather than UNWILLING.

Actually, 2 is also YES... you were offering your services at the top of tis thread.

That you are unwilling (or unable) to explain why, as a self declared skilled photographer, you are unable to take a selfie / self portrait, despite me at your request explaining the reasons why I and others might find that a reasonable question means myself and others will draw our own conclusions with you declining the opportunity to influence positively.

I don't need your education OP, I've been a photographer for decades, have shot all sorts of material, and all sorts of people, some world famous, some only famous in their own household. There is very little I haven't done in photography.

It was a simple question.

There a distinct inability or unwilling to answer questions which have been posed based upon your comments In regard to the skill and decency of picture on profiles here.

The skill you seem to claim to have and wish to share does not seem apparent either on your profile or your ability to articulate your argument or perspective.

Nor is it evidenced by the picture sent to me personally.

And so I ponder exactly what are you trying to gain by this thread?!

I thought it more interesting than the conversations about death, dinner or even cheese. I didn’t realise it would release the hounds.

You make people feel about as welcome as an untrousered genital at a children’s party. Demanding evidence etc.

Read the threads and reflect perhaps. Or don’t I guess.

Perhaps one ought to re-examine their attitude throughout the thread. There is a tone of arrogance self importance and an implication that you yourself are better than those here. Remember your remark as to conversation around photography being too “high brow” for here. And yet there are several photographers within this thread and indeed on the site that don’t believe them selves to be better or criticise the picture of others.

I mean, by all means mention it on your profile. You never know, some may wish to meet and have their pics taken. Some won't. I wouldn't see it as a deterrent for me if I fancied a guy and wanted to meet him anyway. I just may not be up for having pics taken.

What creeps me out/turns me off immensely are the countless number of guys sliding into my messages claiming to be pro-photographers (with shit photos on their profile). Offering free photoshoots or insulting my pics.

Personally, if I wanted professional images, I'd attend an organised shoot or photography event at my local club.

Perhaps allow a Fabber I knew and trusted to take some. But it wouldn't ever really be something I'd look for on here. Or an incentive to meet

As you are failing to comprehend the question, allow me to spell it out one last time:

Please explain what technical issue you as a skilled photographer are unable to overcome that prevents you from taking a self portrait? It would really help the readers of this thread understand your position.

I sincerely doubt there is much for me to learn from you. Not about photography, and certainly not about how to present yourself on a forum. When challenged you turn to abuse. Why? We know why people resort to that.

Maybe a decent portrait lens @ 85m and a small area in an apartment that would be suitable for a photograph would suffice. However I’m not sure their will be any pleasing you. Ever. You are however correct that you won’t learn anything from me, as you appear to know everything already.

Oh, you feel you are limited by your equipment? Strike one! Not enough space? Can't you go outside? Strike two! I didn't need to be pleased, I needed you to explain why you feel capable of photographing other people but not yourself. Strike three!

I do not doubt for one minute there are things I can learn, in many walks of life. With photography for example (as with all walks of life), I'm learning every day.

I am confident however that what ever lessons there are for me in life, you are not my teacher.

"I’m allowed to be arrogant it’s my thread.

Please explain? I fail to see the logic here

So when I own a thread am I not entitled to steer the conversation & be a jerk?

Why would you choose be a jerk anywhere? I don’t get it?. Sigh"
