Surely this can't be right?

My daughter recently completed a 4 hour unpaid shift, was offered a job and even given a start date.
She was then told she has to complete an induction day and has to have the following:
A valid passport
a national insurance card
bank details
Now, she doesn't have a valid passport and is in the process of opening a bank account but she does have a national insurance card. She asked if she could take along her passport which ran out in February of this year and her birth certificate but was told no valid passport, no job.
When she asked why, she was told she has to provide all three in order to prove she is legally entitled to work in the UK???
So before she can get a job and work to subsidise her university education, rather than lay about at home and sign on, she has to find £70 for a new passport?
How is this fair???
She was looking for months and months before she was offered this job - I just don't understand it.  |

its not law or set in stone, but taking into consideration the fines that companies will have to pay for employing illegal workers its something they tend to rely on, and before any one says its so easy to fake i.d., we know, we had an issue today, BUT, some companies wont change their policy

there zhoul be a list of suitable alternative that she can provide. if she ahs none of them then she should be given a time frame in which to get one - allowing her to earn some wages to pay for a passport.
with everyone up in ams about illegal immigrants coming over and nicking our jobs companies have to put measures in place to protect them |

There is a recommended list - you need two types of ID because there is a market in fake NI Cards. This is usually sorted out at job offer stage and not at the induction, for most organisations.

is this a large well known company or a little "operation",if its a little or new company, i would run a check on them as with everything they have asked for would be perfect for an id scam .
its worth checking em out ,obviously if its tesco or asda or a high profile company chances are its legit |

An out of date passport can be used if you are a legal citizen of the EU, up to 5 years I think, as long as there is a resemblance of the person.
My company has just taken on an EU national with his out of date passport, and he was about 5 when his initial photo was taken. |

The passport should be fine, even though out of date, provided as someone else says it is a true likeness.
Does she have a Driving Licence as this would also be valid ID, that could back up the expired passport.
Sounds like someone has misinterpreted the internal policies...or lacks in common sense! You get some people who take things too literally x |

I work in recruitment.......you.need.proof of.id.....ie passport or birth certificate......
Totally out of.order to ask you to get a passport........not.sure what the legality is even of the four hour unpaid work.....
My thought would be do u really want to.work.for a company that operates in this manner???? |

Its a very large scam regarding passports now as for even one for a name change after you have been married its the cost of a new one (around the £70 mark you said), plus photo's which are about a fiver, plus special delivery postage. It works out in the end around £100 or not much change from it. Complete joke. |

Just remind me, which Government brought in these rules(*). And such as CRB checks.
Heard yesterday how someone needed a CRB check to work as a school assistant and a further CRB check to work as an after school club assistant AT THE SAME School.
Madness.
(*) A clue, the PM was a lawyer, his wife was a lawyer, some 300+ of the prospective candidates in 1997 were lawyers.
And you thought they worked for you?

My NI number is ingrained on my memory, how can someone not not their NI number by heart? Moreover, what were you doing as her parent to be not in possession of the NI number she was issued on the day she was born? |

you dont get a NI card on the day you are born you get them at 16 |

that was probably because the afterschool club was run by a seperate company. currently every employer needs to do a CRB on you regardless of the fact that both employers work from the same premises.
The onus is on the employer to ensure that all staf are safe (as can be reasonably assumed) to work with children |

It is so rare these days for any company not asking for these details.
The reasons behind it is to ensure that persons being taken on in employment are legitimate UK citizens, and not foreign nationals who have over-stayed their visas, illegal immigrants etc.
In the event of any employer being found to have employed someone who was an overstayer, illegally in the UK or for other illegal reason, the employer can be fined up to £5000; invariably, the fines are less, but average about £2000.
So employers are taking these steps to show that they have done everything they could have legally to cover themselves.
I consider it really insulting that as someone who was born in the UK and have lived here all my life, that I'm being "grouped" with everyone to prove that I'm a UK citizen.
But it is the shambolic Immigration processes of the last 20 years via various governments that have brought about these moves by employers. |

not everyone has passports but they still insist on one for ID!,even though they are not the most reliable form of ID and lead to believe so easily forged that the police are frequently raiding dens where lots of forged passports are stored.
it costs a small fortune to buy legal passports so the government dept are making more money selling them as a form of identity!. |

The stipulation is for either a valid passport OR an original full birth certificate (not a copy or a part certificate issued in retrospect).
UK Citizens are asked to provide the same details as foreign workers as to do otherwise would (or could) be seen as discriminatory.
The NI proof cannot be an NI card or a payslip from a former employer.
It should be supplied with your personal details on a government issued document such as P45, P60, P11d, notification of tax coding or documents from 'the social' if she has been on benefits.
A lot of employers (especially agencies) ask for these documents prior to engagement as they are open to audit by government agencies and increasingly their own clients, who seek to ensure that their suppliers are breaching no employment legislation. |
