Does your mental health affect you physically?

Lately I have found myself feeling low and totally unsure how to drag myself out of this hole.

At the same time I've noticed lots of aches and pains and random symptoms physically...

When you get down,do you find your body suffers too?...

Yes. And vice versa.

Flare ups trigger low mood. And low mood triggers flare ups

And now a new condition diagnosed ocular migraines. If I was a horse they'd have shot me by now

I either get more aches and pains when I haven't been very active, or the aches and pains that I do get I worry about more because it's not obviously muscular from having being doing loads of exercise.

Unfortunately getting up and moving around isn't something I'm very motivated to do when I'm feeling down so I can get stuck in those states.

When I do manage to get moving it does help though.

Gleam Street

Definately. It makes me lethargic and way more prone to random aches.

I'm lucky though (for me only) that I have my dogs.... I have no choice but to get up and move for them....they didn't choose to live here, so I am forced to ignore those symptoms and focus on their wellbeing instead.

Lately my mental health took a huge nose dive. Getting out of bed became harder, I was totally drained and had no energy to even exercise. Sleep was affected and I just ached all over. Headaches were constant. I'm improving now so feeling better each day xx

I've been listening to things lately about an integrative approach to exercise. Getting mood, breathing, diet, under control. It's a vicious cycle but can be a virtuous cycle.

I'm not beyond the food for thought stage myself, but it's something I'm examining

I’m so sorry to hear that . Glad you’re feeling better. Do you find your headaches are caused by your mental health?

Hugs OP x

I understand if you're feeling low that it's hard to motivate yourself to get out in the fresh air and move.

But it will make you feel so much better.

If you're sedentary all day your body will ache.

Even a half hour walk would help.

I understand that's it's easier said than done though x

I think our bodies and our mental health are intertwined. Your body definitely suffers when your mental health is suffering, but perhaps we focus on it more too? Sorry you’re feeling low

Try slow deep breathing. See if you can identify points of tightness for self massage or loosening up.

Deal with the stress as well, but you can hit these headaches from both sides

i have various minor medical niggles which come and go, call them niggles as any time had them checked out no cause could be found

i think they are all stress/anxiety related

also if my head is not feeling well i dont always look after my physical body well and at times dont care if i am getting ill

Definitely. Muscle pain, exhaustion, headaches and digestive problems are commonly caused by poor mental health.

Other things are possible, even bruising!

Try some light exercise and some fresh air first.

Norfuck! / Lincolnshire

I participated in an on-line training course on Friday, covering communication with people via Telephone instead of face to face.

The human Limbic system covers sensory information which generates emotions. This leads to the decisions we make and how we make them.

At this point in time whilst many are stuck at home, life has changed for many beyond our control, the world isn’t the same etc . Emotions at times run high and the most likely cause for irrational decisions, low esteem, feeling unwell, lethargic, restlessness, sleep deprivation.... any number of factors

It was a very interesting conversation starter and I didn’t realise was so pivotal to our well-being!

Yes. I definetly get digestion upsets when my mood starts dipping, when I have a panic attack and IBS every now and again.

I used to have severe gastrointestinal upset after psychotherapy sessions. (Maybe TMI)

When i’m anxious I get a “nervous” tummy. I can’t have a social meet unless there is a toilet nearby, because when i need to go i very much need to go, within seconds.

I usually get IBS a few days after I've had a very stressful few days. Probably happens a few times a year at the moment.

Yes. If I'm feeling down then I'll be tired, unmotivated, probably get sick as a result of being tired which keeps me tired, which keeps me unmotivated etc. Usually until I get a good cuddle and head scratches from K

I’ve no idea where it came from. I’m currently getting CBT which has helped me through a hard time in life and I’d never had anxiety before that. There doesn’t seem to be enough or mindfulness in the world to get over it!

Try to incorporate your CBT with your mindfulness if you can. Accept the feelings, sit with them, allow yourself to process them.

Then use the CBT techniques to tough through until you can more intensively work on emotional regulation again.

It can take time as well. Don’t be too hard on yourself. I think most of us have been there too.

It’s easy to judge yourself for how you’re feeling, when it’s perfectly natural to be anxious at times.

Definitely.

I try to triage my feelings. Do I need to soothe, distract, or treat?

So is this a "eat chocolate until it goes away", "do something else and pretend the problem isn't there", or "delve into the issue and try to fix it" issue?
