Respect has to be earned. But manners can be associated with respect. Manners and respect are a must if I gonna meet someone

I'm not a big believer in the whole "respect should be earned" thing. I think it should be that ingrained in your soul it's automatic. Now loyalty, loyalty should be earned.

Agreed. Loyalty should be earned, respect should be automatic until it's lost.

Although different people mean different things by respect - some people are talking about basic human decency kind of respect, others are talking about their authority being respected. It's only the first of those that should be automatic.

Respect from who to who?

Respect is a very subjective concept. A lot is down to interpretation.

I can respect a set of rules but carry them out totally differently to someone else.

It's also cultural. What is respect in one country is not in another.

Respect needs to be gained.

I hate the whole ‘respect your elders!’ thing.

Why?

Yeah be polite, kind, friendly etc. But if they don’t respect me, my husband, my child etc...I’m not gonna respect them/tell my child to respect them.

'Respect your elders' is often misinterpreted.

It doesn't mean listen to the miserable old cunt next door and say thank you to them for bursting your football....

It means..... understand they have lived a life and they creak a bit and move a little slowly.

Where I differ from you is that I show respect where none is needed because I respect myself.

To NOT show respect is to be the same as those you rail against.

Is this the same as being kind? We only have to do it to nice people who deserve it?

In what way?

When did they have respect in the past?

What do you class as respect?

We always try to show respect, occasionally it gets thrown back in our faces but not very often.

Thankfully where we live and the people in or lives are very respectful. That is only of recent though. I used to work in a place where my work colleagues were completely disrespectful both physically and mentally. I wasn't prepared to put up with it so I got a new job elsewhere.Thankfully it's a great place to work where I am highly respected and valued.

For me there are two different definitions of respect at play. On the one hand respect for an individual’s rights, dignity, wishes, property etc. is one definition and that for me is a given. When I say some behaviour is disrespectful I generally mean this. On the other hand there is the respect that comes from admiration for achievements, character, deeds etc.... In that case respect is based on actions for me and therefore is earned.
