Superstitious much?
Jump to: Newest in thread
I was out with my daughter earlier and every time we saw a Magpie she said, see that mom...seen by 2 good luck to me and you.
It got me to wondering how many of us are superstitious?
Do you say white rabbits on the 1st of the month?
Do you avoid cracks on the pavements?
What superstitions do you hold? |

I always see one magpie and that normally means a bad day. Have seen more than 2 but that does not bring me anymore luck. Only really magpies I worry about. |

"Never do a wash on New Year’s Day you’ll wash someone out of your family "
I've not this either but New years eve my husband used to open the back door to see it in.
My Scottish dad would open the back door and someone would go out of the back door and come in through the front. |

"Dont slag people off it comes back to you
Karma. "
Personally I dont think that a superstition or a magic force called karma
I see it as a statistical inevitability such as poking a dog with a stick
It's not a magic force that virtually ensures a bite simply the nature of the repeated action xx |

I have a few minor things I do when I play sports. Same gear, same amount of tape on joints, same breakfast but I don’t know if it’s all superstitious or just routine. |

My theory goes
If there was any such thing as karma the orange racist criminal would not be at the White House
I could list more |

Maybe it's a bit of both"
Quite possibly. I have been late before and not done those things and played badly. I think there’s an element to it.
Whenever I go to live football I wear the same shirt until we lose. So if I see 6 games in a row and we win them all I’ll wear that same shirt. Then when we lose or draw it changes and the next run starts... so yeah I am superstitious haha |

Oh now you mention new year, in Welsh speaking areas children go out to sing callenig to bring good luck to the house hold. The luckiest is allowing a dark haired boy to cross the threshold first and unlucky to allow a female redhead!! |

I just remembered my nan saying it to leave your knife and fork crossed on your plate..it means there will be an arguments.
If you are giving someone a purse, you need to put silver in it |

"My mam said you should never cross your knife n fork on an empty plate, not a clue what it means but I never cross them."
I generally confront all superstitions
I can assure you crossing eating implements or knives has no ill effects x |

I remember from school it was supposed to be bad luck to open a crisp packet upside down, walk across 3 drains or walk under a sign or ladder... I’d imagine most are out of luck with them haha |

"Never cross a knife & folk on a plate I don’t know why but that’s 1 I’ve heard "
It's meant to indicate an argument with someone.
I say I'm not superstitious but I do uncross them. Maybe more in remembering my nan than believing the superstition. |

I would say I’m not superstitious BUT it doesn’t hurt to avoid those things that have been said. I don’t believe that one action can cause an incredible amount of bad luck |

My mum is very superstitious. She won't have 13 showing on the calendar of certain flowers in the house. If we went out and had to come back for something we had to sit down before leaving the house again, if she put an item of clothing on inside out she wouldn't change it .
I'm not consciously superstitious, I'll happily walk under a ladder but I do quite often say "touch wood" without even thinking about it . |

I get the touch wood thing
Those tree fairys can be Impish mischievous lil tinkers
Only today a tree root playfully popped up from absolutely nowhere I almost stumbled
Thus touching wood pacifies them
Obviously stroking wood it immensely calming and satisfying |

I seem to do this mostly with magpies! If I see one I’m convinced I’m going to have a shit day. Then I will myself to have a shit day, thus confirming my theory that it’s the magpie’s fault... it’s a struggle. |

I always open the back door and shout ‘White rabbits’ at a full moon, whilst knocking my head and saying ‘Touch wood’ if a magpie appears.
And that, Officer, is how the accident occurred. Sorry I ran that pedestrian over. |

No really superstitious but few things with my powerlifting.
Always the same routine, same number of breaths before each lift, kit goes on in the same order. If I get put off or someone interrupts me I have to start again.
Always wear the socks in competition as well |

Competition is important and you must work hard for it. I think I'd take any bit of physiological advantage I could. But at the end of the day it's your hard work that pays off |
