How many straight people have been persecuted, attacked, killed, discriminated, constantly slagged off on social media just for being straight? How many countries can straight people not get married in because they're straight? How many straight people have had to fled their own home countries to escape persecution just because they're straight?
That's why people don't have to come out as straight OP.
It's important for young LGBT people to see that people in their fields of interest are openly LGBT because it's completely normal to be so, and that might give them the courage to come out themselves and have the freedom and happiness in openly being who they are.
OP, to quote one of your favourite sayings - wake up. |

I heard about this story the other day. It was eye opening to hear his story and I'm glad he's getting support from some of the charities.
It's interesting that rugby has had active players come out but never in football. |

Hell to the yes.
It’s always when things like this get said the it brings it home how much further pride has to go.
When we are equally you can say these things but until then let’s not try to sweep the importance of lgbt culture under the rug |

That's the point. Why do non-straight people have to come out? They shouldn't have to. Sexuality is - and should be - irrelevant. |

Agree completely.
But that is still an ideal, and not the norm, and some choose to come out to represent that fact, as well as the struggle others have been through. ![](/icons/rainbow.png) |

In this world sexuality is only irrelevant if you’re straight. I’m sorry that just the way things are. The world looks lovely through hetro normative eyes.
Of course no one should ever feel like they have to come out but there a big distinction between feeing like they’re being made to come out and feeling like you’re able to come out |

He said he receives support for his mental health. Bcos some of the homophobia he hears does get to him when he reflects on it after games. |

It's a good step that he's getting some support, as struggling alone isn't healthy. I hope he gets peace |

I wholeheartedly agree with this.
I want to see a footballer come out. Although the press will absolutely fucking hound them, it’s a huge step for football and society itself. It’s a huge step to take, but once someone does finally take that step, people will follow.
Once it starts, there will be less people on a day to day basis hiding who they are for fear of persecution.
People will not have to live with the demons of lying to themselves and to others.
Don’t get me wrong, it is entirely their decision to make and I have no judgement that they feel they are unable to do so. But I look forward to the day that they can, and do. |

Not all that North of North London |
I think it's sad that in 2020 no top flight professional footballer has the courage to come out as gay for fear of the media and fans. And it's not just football. And it's very much a societal problem not a sporting obe |

as a football fan, sometimes I don't even feel comfortable being bi in the stand, never mind a professional athlete on the pitch.
Its 100% getting better but theres a long way to go.
He's hiding apart of himself because in his world, that part of himself is frowned upon. and its not about who he's shagging. What about when he meets someone and he wants have his partner by his side like rest of the lads have their girlfriends or wives...
In football especially it'd take an immensely courageous lad to come out as gay but I think that could only help the changing of the culture.
But he'd probably have to take some shit a long side it, which is sad.

"Wasn't Justin Fashanu the first pro footballer to openly come out as gay?
Sad end to his life.
I thought we'd move on socially and mentally since then.
It would appear not. "
Shamed to death by his own family. |

It's actively discouraged. A player's value will drop if they come out as gay. You might think British football fans are homophobic, they are amateurs in compassion to some international club's fans! Would Galatasaray want a gay player? No they would not! |

His story is tragic. Sometimes it seems we've learnt fuck all since then. |

I don't feel comfortable on the stands so i dread to think how you feel. *hugs*
The changing of clubs logos for pride month / rainbow laces day shows just how far we have yet to come. *sigh*. One day... One day... |

I’m agreeing with Clem
But absolutely spot on. Also imagine if he played for Brighton the fans (idiots) would have a field day with that.
Also I suspect he would certainly be expected to be some sort of spokesperson by our tabloid press, trying to use him, until he eventually does something slightly controversial then they’ll turn on him quickly.
Not a position I’d want to be in. |
