Remember a story he told that when he was Ireland manager he’d pay for drinks by cheque but couldn’t understand why the money hadn’t gone out. Turned out fans were putting his cheque in a frame on the wall rather than cashing them. |

When he was the Ireland manager , just before the World Cup and he was being roasted by the press about the fact that most of his team were English, with just a hint of Irish ancestry ..
“Ah well” he says “ I just think that Ireland has been exporting her sons for centuries , and it’s maybe about time that we brought a few of them back .. don’t you” ?
This grissled journalists practically burst in to tears there and then ! |

Just reading through Twitter, so many Irish fans in mourning today, plenty of stories of Jacks decency after football as well as his skills on the pitch.
As an England fan, yes I did want the Republic to win I couldn’t help myself. But Big Jack had that ability to cut through the bullshit

really sad to hear this a true legend I was lucky enough to see him play at the baseball ground in the early 70,s with the likes of peter lorrimer and (norman hunter who by the way played in the 66 team) put that team together and leeds united were one of the hardest teams in the world thou a tackle in those days often Injured a player not like most of todays tackles a different breed of footballer in those days.. RIP jACK |
