I think it's an outdated term. There was a time that if you listened to anything that wasn't popular music (i.e. in the charts) then it was alternative.
Nowadays ... thank goodness ... everything is listened to by a wide range of people and the so called 'charts' could include anything from any genre. Such and eclectic mix out there and it's fab.

"...Alternative to what?
What do you class as alternative music? Non chart? Non mainstream?
i think that about covers it "
But as mentioned above by Buffy, what is classed as alternative these days with all different genres etc being available? |

"I must confess to regarding most Indie bands futile attempts as an alternative style to real music….!.
Hey its just my opinion.... "
LOL and in my opinion if it's Country and western ... hell that's as alterntive as you can get and I'd 'steer' clear!! And I was born in Colorado! LOL |

Indie was originally just independent record labels they were signed to no matter what style of music it was.
Hate politics with music and stuff though, it should be listened to and enjoyed no matter the style. |

Alternative, to me, is noise
It's not music, it's just noise
My mate listens to stuff that my delicate ears cannot comprehend
If a band has become mainstream / accepted they lose all their kudos / credibility for him
They are rarely British bands, usually Japanese or Finnish and have charming names like 'Syphillitic Vagina's' |

No such thing these days because there isn't a counter culture. In the late 60s and 70s when there was, it would have been Underground bands like Hawkwind and The Pink Fairies. |

Is that still used to describe music? seems redundant to me, but then I'm not down with the kids lol!
Perhaps somewhere there are still 'underground' and 'alternative' things going on musically.
Alternative to what? you asked... dunno.. anything your currently hearing |

Back in the day when we were the cool indie kids Alternitive music were the bands that were on independant lables that charted in the Alternitive music charts in the back of Meloday Maker or NME and the moment they charted in the normal pop charts we derided and abandoned them (like 4AD or Creation Records)
Nowadays i dont think it really counts for much, although there is still large Alt Rock scene, but that could just because we are now 40 and no longer down with the kids. |
