I was shocked when I watched the Panorama programme about racism in the Ukraine and Poland, but even more shocked to find those countries denying they are racist. Why oh why was this football event cancelled or held elsewhere? How long before there is trouble? |

The level of racism and trouble is a worry but the fact that everyone denies it is a major concern.
Hopefully that's a very small minority and won't occur but I'm stunned at the blind belief it's not happening. |

To say you were shocked by it illustrates a certain amount of ignorance.
Why is this only becoming an issue now? Ukraine has had this kind of thing going on long before the tournament was announced.
Distasteful and unpleasant yes but shocking no.
People don't seem to know what the actual meaning of words like shocking and fantastic.
I guess everyone is going to be 'shocked' all over again when Russia host it in 2018. |

Excuse me but yes I was shocked, not by the amount of racism but the fact that once Panorama was aired Euro 2012 is still going on in those countries. I do know the meanings and I do know that a pathetic football game is not worth risking lives. |

I'm fairly sure there was the same kind of speculation before the 2010 world cup and there was no trouble whatsoever (or at least very little).

By your very postings here it can be read between the lines that your attitude is very negative. Again, I won't be getting into any arguments/conversations with you about racism in the Ukraine or Poland. All I will ask is when was the last time there was a huge football tournament held in either of those countries? |
Reply privately (closed, thread got too big)
If you're refusing to get into arguments, what's the point in having a thread?
The programme was eye-opening, but not really surprising. I mean, c'mon, we're in England, our football hooligans are world-renowned (perhaps "renowned" isn't the word) - countries lay on extra police whenever we play - even Poland!
Racism always seems to crop up when football is involved - much moreso than any other sport I can think of, so if you combine the two, Racist hooligans being connected to football isn't really a massive step.
I agree that the denial was quite surprising - and almost comically blatant: "No, they're not doing a Nazi salute, they're all pointing..with their right arms..in the air...", and neo-nazis are not what you'd expect from Poland (unless they have a HUGE sense of irony), but the fact there's violent racism? Not so surprising.
Hopefully UEFA are right, and hosting Euro 2012 will bring the spotlight down on the issue in a way that'll either expose these people for what they are, or make them behave, but somehow I doubt it. Remember how Euro '96 eliminated hooliganism from English football? doesn't work like that.
UEFA should have looked more deeply into the culture of the host nation's fans before picking one, but if you look hard enough, you'll find undesirable elements everywhere if you look hard enough.
Cancelling the tournament or hosting it elsewhere won't help. Maybe if we built a pitch on a platform in the Atlantic and broadcast it from there, with no fans around at all, the problem would go away. |

Threads are not always created to have arguments. And although I mentioned Euro 2012, why is it acceptable to carry on with this in the Ukraine when it has been highlighted about the racism? Who will be responsible when they have death on their hands? |
Reply privately (closed, thread got too big)
Who was held responsible for Hillsborough? Who was held responsible for Heysel, or the St Andrews incident in 1985?
My point is that you can't write off a country because there *might* be incidents of racist football hooliganism there, because once you do that, you can never play international football anywhere.
(and FYI, the Ukraine was only actually its own country from '91 onwards, there hasn't been much chance for it to host any major events) |

Euro 2012 is going ahead as too much money and planning has been poured into it now to stop it on the basis of the findings of one BBC Documentary.
It has been going on for years, so why did the BBC only choose to highlight it now ?
For maximum effect and (to a degree) to sensationalise one aspect of an underlying movement across wide areas of the Eastern European sub continent.
So that begs the question, should it have been given to those two countries in the first place ?
Maybe not
But only the selecting body can answer the questions as to why they were chosen.
Racism remains an issue throughout most of Eastern Europe.
Football merely provides a focus for it and an opportunity for the 'gangs' to get together en masse.
I think anyone travelling to the competition should do so with their eyes open and to that end, the documentary served some purpose.
What it failed to do was address the underlying issues of disaffected youth and gang culture in both countries.
That is where the true problems lie - not in the football stadiums.
There will be violence, there will be arrests, there will be innocents affected.
What we have to hope is that the police and the state in both countries have factored that into their planning and act on it when flashpoints occur.
They have too much to lose to allow it to go unaddressed - Ukraine probably more so than Poland, but then again despite its protestations to the contrary, it always has 'Mother Russia' to fall back on. |

Most English people are completely ignorant about what goes on in countries other than the ones to which they go on holiday. I would be willing to bet that most people probably don't know where Ukraine is never mind what goes on there.
The one good thing about any international sporting event in Ukraine is that any hooligans who fall foul of the Police there will be dealt with very firmly!!! |
Reply privately (closed, thread got too big)
If the event had been cancelled then they would have given in to the race hate nutters...
The worrying thing is that the government out there are happy to let them get away with it..our spineless F.A wont say fuck all though, too worried about upsetting someone.
Monkey chants were heard during the England training session yesterday, John Terry has been warned that if it happens again he will be sent home!
Thoujsands of football supporters have arrived in Poland from England this morning, to cheer on their national side...POLAND! |
Reply privately (closed, thread got too big)
I think some of you have taken panorama on face value, a 30 min programme that took months to film and edit. I bet that bloke went to over 100 games and in the end he came up with 2 games where "racist violence" occured, the other part of it that was missed is that both games shown on panorama were by his own admission "local rivals".
TV doing what it does best, hyping up a storm in a tea cup, and now the papers are all over it! this kind of behavious still goes on in england (believe me I am a season ticket holder) and have seen some very unsavioury sights over the past 5 years |

Game 4/31 Germany v Portugal
Tight one this, the Germs always do well in tournaments although they do tend to start off at a snail's pace.
Portugal have got Ronaldo, the blubbering little pussy (he cried like a newborn when he lost the final to Greece - in Portugal hehehe), but he has stuck in 55 goals this season.

without reading the entire thread I would like to comment on the original post.
The media is brilliant at building up a picture from isolated incidents. For example, we were in Egypt a couple of weeks ago and were having a discussion about the political problems (voting was going to start the day after we came home) and one person said but Cairo is no worse than London, look at all the riots you are having in your capital city!
My point is, if you accept what was on the box as gospel should we be hosting the Olympic games and putting the lives of all the sportsmen and women and tourists that will be visiting London at risk because of all the fires and looting? |

Sorry, fell asleep after lunch.
Nearly fell asleep again watching this game.
2-1 to Italy I reckon. Or Spain. Or Both. Or neither. I'll let you know when the final whistle goes. |

Game 6/31 Croatia v Rep of Ireland
Seems to be a few upsets going on in the early games so let's go with the flow and stick Ireland in for a win. They will concede though, so 2-1 to the Paddies. |

Game 7/31 The Big One: France v England
A toughie this as France are undefeated in 21 games and are one of the in-form clubs of the moment. England go into tonight's game with little expectation (if you believe that bollocks you'll believe anything) but, with a new manager, crocked players and suspensions, and with this year being the Queen's Jubilee, and the London Olympics in a few week's time, the favour of the Gods, a couple of terrorist bombs in the French hotel, an English ref, linesmen and fouth & fifth officials, a big dollop of luck and generally hoping France falls into a deep pit - we just might win it.
2-1 to England. |

I can see this'll be Englands style for the rest of the tournament, defend with 10 men behind the ball and try and sneak on with a free0kick or corner. Turgid pish, they deserve to get pumped, hopefully by ze germans. Thought benzema was infuriating, never made any runs into the box. |

he was a frenchman and expected his team to steamroll england for fecks sake!,when they could do that he decided the next best thing to seeing his team lose was to sleep through it as that is what the french do in the afternoon is it not?.
i noticed the england fans were wide awake and singing though!. |

so the low expectations bollocks, got england a decent result today.
already the expectations are rising.
sweden should be a walk in the park,
ukraine have nothing to fear.
my my my,it's englands achilles heel, they think there's going to be easy games, they think they only have to turn up,and the points are in the bag.
they would have won much more, but for this attitude.
the sweden game will tell us,if history has taught them anything.
this is not the _iews of a bitter scotsman.this is my honest opinion,as to why england seldom achieve, their true potential. |

Adding answer to first post on this topic, I want to say that it is just propaganda what BBC done it is basically - Don't go to Poland and Ukraine spend some money on Olympics. TV is the evil and they can manipulate all lemings.
As we all see as far as it goes there is no racism at all.
And England match was so boring, I don't think England will go far in this competition. |

Game 9/31 Greece v Czech Republic
The Czechs were hammered by a rampant Russian team in their opening game and Greece held co-hosts Poland to a draw - a game that saw a sending off for both sides.
I have to fancy Poland getting something from this match if they want to continue in the competition on home soil so I'm going for a 2-1 win to the Poles. |

Game 10/31 Poland v Russia, aka WW3'ish.
It seems these two countries don't know the meaning of the word 'friendly' and their relative fans have been at each other's throats all day.
Let's hope it's a good match and not too many casualties.
3-2 to Poland (home team advantage)
