I've been on a fire fighting course the past 2 weeks. I've done this same training course about 4 times now over the years. But because it's not my main job, I've only ever done the training and regular drills at work.

I really dont know how you guys (and girls) can do this for a living. I take my hat off to you if this is your full time job!

The boredom of fitting smoke alarms to tell people their toast is burnt is tough!

People train to do the job they want and stay because they enjoy it.

My dad did it full time for 28 years, lots of good stuff lots of bad, probably a better job then than now if you had the stomach for it

"People train to do the job they want and stay because they enjoy it."

That’s so true.

What continues to amaze me are the people who post a public photo (face included) of themselves in their uniform alongside other explicit pictures.

Just seen one of a ‘fab straight‘ fireman in uniform with face showing and other pictures of him naked with his tattoos on display.

The best bit being his verifications from TV/TSs. Being straight means straight, while we all know fab straight is about as straight as a curly wurly

Fabs probably needs a new gender option: situationally bi

I admire anybody who can hurl themselves up one of those ladders without shitting themselves. I know I couldn't.

By far the most pointless waste of tax payers money.

Even their own chief conceded that putting out fires was only 5% of a fireman entire work history(that's mostly car and skip fires).

Their shifts also allow them to do other jobs like van driving etc.

As industry gets more safe in non combustibles and detectors the chance of fires becomes less.

Should be disbanded with one paid station chief and rapid response volunteers on call like RNLI.

There,just saved the nation millions.

And yes I do know firemen before anyone pipes up.

They are now mostly called fire and rescue services and yes it's mostly four days on and four off and most have part time jobs, some things I know my dad had to deal with over the years.

Cut a young boy and his dad out of a light aircraft that had crashed, involved carrying a generator over a mile.

Cutting an elderly couple out of a car after a head on collision, she was unhurt but died anyway he made it.

A horse went through the floor of a rotten horse box, they drove several miles with that, not nice.

First big crash on M25, thought he'd found a burnt baby in the back of a car, turned out to be a dog.

Pulling cows out of a swamp.

Silver smiths fire, had to be tested for cyanide poison.

Cat rescue don't get me started.

Yep not so many fires, but plenty of rescue
