A cold/flu, its just come on last night, my throats killing me and its moved up into my ears and nose now

Things like lemsips dont work for me, nor do these old wifes tale remedies like honey and hot water with sugar mixed in and a dash of lemon etc, i need something thats clinically proven to work, i usually just ride it out and go to bed for a few days but i have to go to a funeral friday so seriously need to shift it by then or at least be at the stage im coming thro the other side and well enough to go, im getting a bit worked up about it now which im sure isnt helping

So anyone know whats the strongest/best thing on the market?

Thanks

Bolton

There isn't a cure unfortunately, just stuff to alleviate to symptoms - i swear by whisky, lemon and hot water - doesn't cure you but after a few you don't care. Good luck though, it's not nice at all. Z

Naughty....it works for me but everyone is different!

Strongest Nurofen you can get, put layers of clothes on and hit the bed....sweat it out if you can.

Sorry you feel rough.

Try orange cordial made with hot water, gives a real vit c boost.

The beechams cold and flu capsules work for me and to unblock your ears the black menthol lyptus sweets are really strong and clear my head.

Hope you feel better soon hun xx

if its in your ears could it possibly be start of a sinus infection, im prone to ear infections and end up on all kinds of anti biotics..

my cheeks ache and can feel like an air bubble build up of pressure when i swallow.. so possible self medicate with Sudafed.. nip down the pharmacist if you can.

If it's just viral then only over the counter remedies will do anything.

ONLY if it's bacterial will antib's work.

I know this sounds like an old wives tale but try putting vicks on the soles of your feet (then put socks on) and it will help you sleep especially if you have a cough. It won't help get rid of your cold tho.

You can expect a week without being treated

Or 7 days if you are....

Wish you better x

Hit curry with plenty of spices and garlic. Lots of fluids. Lots of vitamin C.

"curry?"

Sometimes it promotes perspiration and it is said to help.

I've always found a sauna ... hot as I can stand for as long as possible drinking lots of fluids (hydration salts) whilst in there, similar to sweating it out in bed..

Liquids, sleep, more liquids and more sleep is the best option.

Tingley Wakefield

this was given to me by a throat surgeon years ago and always works for me, great for loss of voice and sore throat. Karvol capsule or a few drops of Karvol liquid into a small bowl BOILING water over it and a towel over your head breath the fumes into your throat not up your nose. its like swallowing razor blades but is great as it lines the throat and vocal chords as well as clearing the head. Only Karvol will do it has something in it that the others dont have easily available from Boots etc. this remedy saved me having a nodules removed from vocal chords as it cleared them .xx

no one to help you out? If I was closer I would offer. Nothing worse than feeling like rot and still having to look after your kids x

Yeah it numbs it for a bit and can get over the counter. Cherry ones much better than the orginal and same price.

The following may not suit everyone, as they may interact with other medications etc. etc., therefore, check with your friendly pharmacist first before taking any of these.

Sudafed Nasal Decongestant tablets containing Pseudoephedrine HCl 60mg, one tablet every 6 hours. It dries my nose and I can breathe and sleep better at night.

Paracetamol 500mg tablets, two every 6 hours with the Sudafed, they help to lower the temperature and ease aches and pains.

If I have a dry cough, I would take Pholcodine Linctus, only the one containing sugar and alcohol, as the new sugar free formulations are FOUL!

The above can't get rid of the cold/flu, however, they make it more bearable.

Before going to bed, I would have a Hot Toddy, made with hot milk, whisky and honey.

Get well soon NN!

fgo to a proper Pharmicist the old type, ask them to make you a 50/50 suspension of coediene and supafed, follow the instructions he / she will give you

works for me every time, and a lot cheaper than the brand name over counter stuff that contains the same stuff

Plenty of fluids, plenty of food to keep your energy levels, lots of layers to sweat it out and the hottest chilli sauce you can handle and find, oh and sleep.... do them all and you should soon shift it.

I rarely get a cold, I think because I take Vit C tablets every day. However if I do get one I use Echinacea. You can get it from boots or Holland and Barrett. It works a treat.

Hope you feel better soon x

A few remedies, but it all depends on the type of cold...

For a tickly, irritating cough then slice a cm of root ginger into a mug, steep in boiling water and sip. You can add honey and slices of lemon or add the ginger to herbal tea.

Also soluble paracetamol will help deal with a sore throat as it has a topical effect as well as the effect on the rest of your nervous system. Don't forget to check the paracetamol content of other remedies (lemsip, beechams).

As someone else has said, steaming your head works wonders for nasal/sinus/ear congestion. Adding Karvol, menthol oil or Olbas oil helps.

Also for ear congestion wrap a hot water bottle in a towel (or use a wheat bag if you have one) and lie on it with it under your ear - my sis slept on one once when the earache was really bad and lots of dark brown gunk came out!!!

If you are severely congested (and this only works when you have absolutely no sense of smell) roughly chop an entire head of garlic, add to a pint of water and simmer till you have a tea cup full. If your cold is bad enough you won't be able to smell it. Strain and when slightly cooled drink in one go. It has to be in one go as you should start to get your senses of smell and taste back as you drink...

Good luck!

Oh and for sore throats drink hot drinks as hot as you can bear - it kills some of the bugs (a tip I got while suffering from a lot of tonsillitus)
