"Queen Elizabeth as visited 52 of the 54 countries of the Commonwealth during her 60 years as monarch, some of them many more than once, the exceptions being Rwanda (joined 2009) and Cameroon (2005). Last night's concert featured people from all over the Commonwealth who looked up at Her Majesty in awe. I saw those young African girls who were simply amazed to find themselves in such a place performing in front of a remarkable woman. They could never have dreamed they'd ever get so close to an icon of the 20th & 21st Centuries. She made that possible with her untiring and unswerving leadership of a host of countries allied to the UK through a Common bond - herself. For 60 years she has given of herself for the sake of the Kingdom she swore to serve unfailingly in 1952, and she asked us to help her in keep her promise back then. We'll not see her like again." ![]()

"makes me feel proud that the world is watching as we celebrate what is great about GREAT BRITAIN. bitterness is destroying us.... " I was watching the concert last night and it made me wonder how other countries are _iewing the events of the last few days. I don't know in what great detail the events have been broadcast across the world, but more than I found myself pondering the thought, "do they think, 'Wow, them Brits know how to party!'" As for bitterness dividing us, no, it isn't, as we always pull together intimes of celebration or in times of adversity, regardless of how much our love of being British is undermined from within.

"thanks god i've largely missed the whole thing, having a lavish celebration for a 60 year reign of an unelected head of state is disgusting, and shameful, the rest of the world must laugh at us. ![]() I think you might find that many people abroad really enjoyed the ceremonies, admired the stoic dignity with which the Queen represented Britain during the pageant and I for one have only heard great admiration from friends and family abroad.

"thanks god i've largely missed the whole thing, having a lavish celebration for a 60 year reign of an unelected head of state is disgusting, and shameful, the rest of the world must laugh at us. ![]() would think the world looked upon scotland with more incredulity when they released a convicted bomber to live out the last 4 years in relative comfort, hailed as a hero, in his homeland, than they have on the UK celebrating their head of states 60 year reign. i havent watched a minute of any of the celebrations (not my thing, tbh) but listend to some of the commentary on radio and appreciated it. trust a Scot to be the first to show dismay at it. jesus, give them independance asap for christs sake!

" trust a Scot to be the first to show dismay at it. jesus, give them independance asap for christs sake!" Less of the Scots bashing thanks! I'm as proudly scottish as anyone and I loved watching the celebrations the whole weekend. I thought the concert last night was amazing (a few dodgy acts aside) and I thought the way Buck Palace was used as a video backdrop was inspired, especially when Madness were on and having it lit up like a council tenement! Absolutely proud to be part of Britain and long may it stay that way!

"The Queen and her close family I think are ok. It's the hangers on that piss me off ![]() Those hangers on who recieve no money from the public purse you mean? The funding of the Royal Family changed some years ago and now only the major Royals recieve money from the taxpayer. The total cost of the monarchy to the British taxpayer varies depending on the calculations used of the cost for the monarchy. Official costs according to formal reports filed by the Royal Household state that total annual expenditure as of March 2012 was £32.1 million. However it has been estimated by the anti-monarchy pressure group Republic that when additional costs including security, lost revenue and palace grounds maintenance among others are included the cost is between £134 and £184 million per year. Until 1760 the monarch met all official expenses from hereditary revenues, which included the profits of the Crown Estate (the royal property portfolio). King George III agreed to surrender the hereditary revenues of the Crown in return for the Civil List, and this arrangement persists. The Crown Estate is one of the largest property owners in the United Kingdom, with holdings of £7.3 billion in 2011. It is held in trust, and cannot be sold or owned by the Sovereign in a private capacity. In modern times, the profits surrendered from the Crown Estate have exceeded the Civil List and Grants-in-Aid. For example, the Crown Estate produced £200 million for the Treasury in the financial year 2007–8, whereas reported parliamentary funding for the monarch was £40 million during the same period. From 2013, the Civil List and Grants-in-Aid will be replaced by a single Sovereign Grant, which will be 15% of the surplus generated by the Crown Estate. The changes were introduced by the Sovereign Grant Act 2011. The annual amount will be calculated on the revenue from two years previously, and the arrangements will be re_iewed by 2020. Other than The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh is the only member of the Royal Family to receive an annual parliamentary allowance to enable him to carry out official public duties. Since 1993, The Queen has repaid the annual parliamentary allowances received by other members of the Royal Family. Most of the allowances received are spent on staff who support their public engagements and correspondence. In 2000, the annual amounts payable to members of the Royal Family (which are set every ten years), were reset at their 1990 levels for the next ten years. Apart from an increase of £45,000 on the occasion of The Earl of Wessex’s marriage, amounts remain as follows, provided by The Queen: The Duke of York (£249,000 per annum) The Earl of Wessex (£141,000 per annum) The Princess Royal (£228,000 per annum) The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester (£175,000 per annum) The Duke and Duchess of Kent (£236,000 per annum) Princess Alexandra (£225,000 per annum). "actually she looked really tired on the TV just now, feck knows how she does it... in her 80's" They both are fitter than most at that age and I m sure some of it has something to do with that overarching sense of duty and self discipline. I could not be that strict with myself and have nothing but admiration for those who can.
"actually she looked really tired on the TV just now, feck knows how she does it... in her 80's" Not surprised... They said that she has some 400 engagements a year... That's more than one a day... They were saying that she needs to start handing over more to the younger royals now. Cali

"For me the thing is 60 years of unstinting service and duty to this country, has to be admired whether your a royalist or not ,another women who did that is being beatified into a saint by the pope. These celebrations are a way the country can show appreciation to an individual who has served the nation well and with a good heart. It is said one of the few times of sadness for her was losing Britannia her floating home . In recognition of her reign i would hope the country build her a magnificent replacement. Its loss in terms of the sheer prestige of its arrival anywhere in the world, did not serve the nation well in my opinion. " I was in agreement with you...until Britannia. The Queen is rich enough to buy her own yacht, why should I help fund it?

The bulk of it has been borne by the Royals themselves or by private donation. For a million quid of taxpayers money. Not bad. Not bad at all. ![]()

We went to the lighting of a beacon that was near to us last night, there were people of all ages singing the anthem when it was lit and giving the old three cheers.....there are lots of people about who appreciate the monarch." even last night in our pub ... end of the concert and national anthem started .... every person in the pub stood up and sang along. completely unexpected but what a surprising thing to do... never expected it but was just like it had been rehearsed

Each spending a nominal amount of £10 whilst there, then the money paid to travel there, either in fuel for their cars or railfare. £1m spent generating in excess of £10m for businesses locally and nationally, who will pay corporation tax on those earnings of 20% = £2m, being conservative with the figures. These donations will be used in communities and charities up and down the country and through the commonwealth countries. For instance, restoring sight to those who need cataract operations, to inner cities for setting up urban gardens and allotments to help educate about fresh fruit and veg and nurtrition. Scholarships set in place to enable disabled students. Small gesture on her part but far reaching for those who may benefit from it.

"I am not a Royal Hater, I do not wish any of them any malice BUT I have no wish to be reigned over by people who have no concept of what people suffer/go through in the real world. I also know that a million quid would not go far BUT I do believe it could be put to better use. Medical research, helping the homeless etc, etc. The Queen has asked that any gifts from countries heads of state, individuals, not be given to her personally but that donations be made to the diamond jubilee fund. Small gesture on her part but far reaching for those who may benefit from it." I believe there are rules on what the Queen can accept as a personal gift and what she receives as head of state. Gifts presented to her in her official capacity as head of state are considered property of the Crown Estate and disposed of / distributed by the personnel who control that body. Even the property the Royal Family uses are not theirs to sell/renovate as private individuals and are retained/maintained by the Crown Estate - which ultimately is owned by the people.
