"Whit, intelligence or rudeness?"

To be sarcastic is rude...

To be ironic can be humorous...

To have a good sense of wit and irony is 'kin hilarious...

In the 17th Century, French courtiers (spelling?) were expected to be terribly witty, if you weren't you were awfully unpopular. Puns were looked down on, if you were good at puns but not 'witty' you basically got the piss taken out of you at court, and lost the repect of Ol' Louis.

So maybe the French started sarcasm.

I lke it sometimes

I suspect that Madame Fia would "like it" more than sometimes.

It can be all three. Its how the words are delivered that's the key.

Sarcasm isn't always negative but often it is. We all do it to some degree

"Whit, intelligence or rudeness?"

Wit , intelligence or rudeness ?

Sarcasm is none of those and all of those. It is cutting and barbed, it is clever , hilarious and cruel.

The effects of sarcasm cannot be defined except in the moment in it's specific context.

It has many uses and many masters.

It cannot be made use of by those will dulled intellectual levels.

To be manifest it requires the highest order function of the human brain, the ability to understand irony, emotion and social cues.

The retort of 'Sarcasm being the lowest form of wit' is most often misquoted and is only resorted to by those without the ability to muster a suitable retort.

ANNNNNNNND.... Just because a saying is attributed to Oscar Wilde doesn't mean it's true....ffs.....

Same goes for Jesus.

View. I have never read a nasty word from you. Sarcastic yes. Nasty ? No.

Proving that sarcasm need not be cruelly cutting and harmful. It's the usage and style that matters.
