Does anyone else here find it a bit ridiculous that they've now taken off Little Britain, come fly with me and the League of gentlemen off Netflix because they were seemed as Racist?

Now Inbetweeners has been taken off. Same with Leigh Francis apologising for his outrageous but funny portrayals of celebrities in Bo Selector. He's a comedian it's what he does he takes the piss out of everyone.

All these shows I loved and still do and I'm mixed race I didn't find them as being offence towards a certain ethnic group or even towards myself. I just feel some people can be too overly sensitive and don't know when to or how to have a laugh.

Just my opinion.

How long before Father Ted is pulled for offending Catholics, or Friday Night Dinner in case Jews are offended?

Political correctness is unrelenting and can never be fully satisfied. It will always seek out new targets for erasure or censure. The more people give in the worse it becomes. It is a form of censorship cloaked in a "humanitarian" disguise.

It's a societal blight and a mental illness run amok.

some shows already have a warning before saying there is racist context in the show or something. Old tom and jerry has it.

Which I think is ok, why pretend like something didn’t exist.

These things are good but pretty empty gestures, like companies stopping sponsorship for racist people. They’re easy often temporary fixes.

I’d like to see actual support and infrastructure being planned.

It's not ridiculous at all. I agree that some of it has gone to far But I think it's about time that we started to have an adult conversation about what we feel is now appropriate and what isn't.

Southampton General hospital removed a mural that was painted by Rolf Harris.

Noone kicked up a fuss about that.

Because everybody agrees that what he did was wrong and it was no longer appropriate.

Thet Pandering to customers on social media rather than actually tackling the problems within their own industry with their own content about inequality.

Netflix should PRODUCES more shows the tackle and educate the public on a range of issues from racism to gender equality.

The current trend is take an existing show/movie where men where dickheads in power and remake it just swap the genders around...err wtf?

Alf Garnett wasn't funny because he was racist. He was funny because he was the butt of the jokes. He always came out of it looking like an arsehole. The entire point of the show was that racism is for arseholes.

Exactly and the same is true of Love Thy Neighbour. It tried to portray how stupid racism is and quite successfully

It's been a while since I've watched it but I dont remember that character actually pretending to be black - I'd always assumed that he was a twisted version of a carnival clown. His hair, clothing and the way he talked did not suggest to me that he was blacking up in the minstrel show way at all.

It did, but it also pandered to some profoundly dodgy stereotypes. Very much a product of it's time and quite rightly wouldn't fly now. Also, it just wasn't very good.

"Heard this morning that Fawlty Towers has gone. Also The Mighty Boosh which I didn't think had anything racey in it?!

Ref Fawlty Towers, it's the episode relating to Basil mentioning "Don't mention the War" plus the character of The Major, makes an offensive comment about Hitler.

Maybe the BBC are worried that Hitler's relatives will launch a lawsuit! "

My understanding is that it was the use of the N word.

If they do then there are some seriously fucked up people in this world who cannot even realise that his impression and the offence it caused was the whole point of that episode.

Hmm. I sort of disagree with taking down The League of Gentlemen solely on the basis of Papa Lazarou. ) Yes, he wore black face paint, but he clearly wasn't supposed to be portraying an actual black man. The face paint was just one of the many unsettling, unpleasant and just plain "wrong" things about him. He was *supposed* to be a horrible character and the blackface just fed into that. That said, I can see why Netflix were concerned and if you haven't seen it by now, maybe you were never that bothered about watching it?

Barbara the hairy trans taxi driver, on the other hand? Yeah, that's 100% a fair cop.

Yes, ISIS are primarily known for their powerful dislike of decades-old British sitcoms. It's what drives them to commit their atrocities.

It is not about personal taste, the amount of jokes about scousers and geordies are laughed at by the locals and moostly told by them, but if someone is offended should they be banned?

Should Harry Enfield have his shows stopped? All this is scary and wrong feedom first allways

I understand perfectly well. I'm not offended by scouse jokes per se. I just find them tired and overdone. Harry Enfield did that bit thirty years ago. It's played out.

Comedy has moved on. Some people have not. I get it. It's totally normal for people to get a bit stuck in the past as they get older. It's exactly the same as shouting at the radio because you don't understand this new music and it all just sounds like noise. It happens.

You evolve or you get left behind.

Yes but it all part of history, and people have the right to watch it if they want, they do not have to.If we keep stopping things that do not fit the view of the week then there is no humour at all.

I sm sure we both like different programmes, different music but that is ok.Should radio 2 be banned and all the golden oldies stations go?Do not be crazy please. One day the humour you like will be found to be offensive because all humour is offensive it has to be to be funny.

You absolutley do have the right to continue watching it. The DVD box sets are still available for fans to buy. These shows haven't been banned. Netflix and Britbox have just taken them down from their streaming platforms, which is their right. They're commercial service providers, not museum archives.

I think that perhaps it's corporate knee-jerking rather than an honest appraisal that is attempting any 'correction or recognition of or to institutional racism'.

An out-of-sight out-of-mind reaction so to speak. Let's not be caught after the speed camera has flashed effect

Damned if they do and damned if they don't - but the bigger issue is in setting a narrative that can make progress to address the issue properly, promptly, and with a level of sensitivity that all sides feel at ease with.

Nobody can argue or pretend that our western society is equal at many levels - but racism is a different story altogether.

Now is the time for listening.

I think its absolutely shocking. Where were the riots before this criminal was arrested after committing a crime and not only that was off his face on drugs, now I'm not condoning actions of police but lets not forget he was a criminal.

The programmes and statues are part of the past these programmes are no longer made and nor are statues either I think if people want to be treated with respect they need to stop raking up the past and write their own history from now.

If a person was killed by cops in UK does anyone really think the US would have reacted in the same manner.

This world is sadly run by too many snowflakes who like to complain at the slightest thing and soon enough will be no comedy to be had for fear of upsetting people

Listening, learning, thinking, let's act right rather than act fast. As some other clever soul already contributed... Its seems many are caught up in the need to be seen to be doing something.... Possibly anything... Without thinking to deeply about the consequences.

No I dont because where were the riots when white person was killed by cops or blacks.

Point is most blacks are killed by blacks in gang related deaths and they can joke about racism as much as they want.

All these tv programmes removed yet 2 black fellas dressing as whites in Weyman brothers film still airs world stinks of hypocrisy.

I'm not a racist even have half cast niece and nephew who agree with me.

It's a remarkable sign of privilege that one can compare debilitating illness and disability, seriously, to a society growing up and reexamining it's values.

The fact that you believe that you can say such things out loud and be taken seriously shows a breath taking callousness.

I see a culture war. People who are wilfully or deliberately blind, who don't like being forced to look. They want to avert their eyes from the discomfort, blame someone else. So they lash out, trivialise issues, try to use slurs to make their opponents look ridiculous. And it's not working. So they get more vicious.

And we see them for who they are.

"Come mothers and fathers

Throughout the land

And don't criticize

What you can't understand

Your sons and your daughters

Are beyond your command

Your old road is rapidly agin'

Please get out of the new one

If you can't lend your hand

For the times they are a-changin'"

Why does my opinion offend you if it's not even directed your way? Why do people go out of their way to take something personally that has nothing to do with them? I'll stand by what I said. Political correctness and constant virtue signaling are destructive and do nothing but stifle honest debate by turning collective consensus upon a specific path. Because it's 2020 and equating illnesses with having a tantrum (displacing discomfort over changing social mores) is unacceptable.

"I think its absolutely shocking.

Surely you know that this case was just the "straw that broke the camels back"

No I dont because where were the riots when white person was killed by cops or blacks.

Point is most blacks are killed by blacks in gang related deaths and they can joke about racism as much as they want.

All these tv programmes removed yet 2 black fellas dressing as whites in Weyman brothers film still airs world stinks of hypocrisy.

I'm not a racist even have half cast niece and nephew who agree with me.

If it's ok for black people to take piss out of whites then needs to be same.

If rioting why defaced cenotaph and other war memorials?"

"There seem to be a few people here who don't understand how comedy works.

Alf Garnett wasn't funny because he was racist. He was funny because he was the butt of the jokes. He always came out of it looking like an arsehole. The entire point of the show was that racism is for arseholes.

Exactly and the same is true of Love Thy Neighbour. It tried to portray how stupid racism is and quite successfully "
