Never used viber, although heard of it. I have whatsapp but you need to give out your mobile to use it, unlikely the OP will get a deluge of invites to use it |

Use Whatsapp and think it's great. Friend told me about it when I started running out of texts during the month. TBH use that more than my texts now.
Bu as has been said, you have to hand out your mobile number, so only for trusted friends |

Viber uses VoIp...Voice over Internet Protocol, much like skype, there for only works in a good 3g service area or on WiFi |
