Saw it last night, after the months of hype and expectation.. Still processing it, but thought it left more questions(that aren't merely open to interpretation), than it actually answered.
Good film, don't get me wrong(cast are excellent, especially Michael Fassbender), but not quite sure that it's good enough to compare with Alien..
Thoughts everyone? |

I'm really looking forward to seeing this, love the Alien franchise right through to AVP2
I've heard mixed re_iews so far but keeping an open mind and making my own decision |

Left me and Jen very disappointed, a bit of a turkey. It does not have the tension of Alien and the story line is weak. Ridley is living off his reputation for this one. |

I shall find the courage to see it on my own, as the OP forewarned me about some gruesome/scary scenes!
Not sure about a blond Michael Fassbender, however, he has knocked George Clooney off the top spot as my favourite male actor.

I think perhaps people should make up their own minds but for me, it was a big fat disappointment. It didn't have the tension or sense of terror that the others had and created as many questions as it answered.
Too much talking, not enough action and 2D characters I couldn't give a shit about. It just goes to show that all the technology in the world can't compensate for a crap story-line which has been badly scripted. |

Personally loved it- great that it does have ambiguity and dialogue rather than just action sequences and one liners that Hollywood vomits up in a production line.
Liked that it was not just a precursor to Alien, and just set in the same universe. If anything I think the film is setting up the true Alien Prequel. |

i"m not a huge die hard fan of the Alien franchise, so I guess I didn't go into it with great expectations. I did enjoy the film but like so many others have mentioned it does leave a lot more questions than it answers.
I also think the use of 3D was a bit crap, I was expecting big things with it being shot by Ridley Scott, but most 3D films disappoint, the only exception being Avatar, which really put the technology to good use. |

I think a good part of the problem is that this entry into the canon has been way too long in coming. Since the original Alien(a 33 yr old film), we've had 3 sequels, 2 sort-of prequels(the AvP films, which were pretty poor IMHO), various comics/graphic novels, and several video games- all of which were pretty action-orientated. |

Agreed. I watched it in 3D myself, and could've quite happily watched it in 2D and not noticed any difference |

Where it basically comes from is Dark Horse comics owned the rights to use the two properties(Aliens and Predator), and the kind of threw them together as a what if? crossover. Fans lapped it up, the makers of Predator 2 showed the xenomorph skull on the ship at the end as a nod to the comics, which sent fans into a collective geekgasm, and created speculation that there'd be a Aliens vs Predator film, and eventually studio bosses decided that there was enough demand to make the films.
Just a shame we got the turkeys that we did.
As for where those films fit in, I reckon they should be dismissed as nothing more than interesting what if?s, rather than actual canon |

I read a scathing re_iew which actually made me want to see it more (the re_iew basically said why depart from a winning formula?) - I was hoping for something a bit deeper and less action-oriented than the sequels.
I enjoyed it, as others have said it raised more questions than it answered and I look forward to the next film if it gets made in my lifetime. I feel it could have been so much better though. It did lack the tense atmosphere of 'Alien' but for me the main weakness was that I found myself not much caring about any of the characters, which is pretty essential really in order to get much out of a film. You need someone to identify with, and there wasn't anyone. |

its set 40 years before the alien story, its a prequel. if you look on yahoo there is an inter_iew with the original producer(cant remeber his name)explains how they found pilot of freighter with hole in his chest, the one where they answered distress signal. |

Ok. Saw it sat night in 3D at Showcase walsall and if you expecting Alien you're going with totally the wrong idea..
It def leaves it open for more movies for example how does the story line re the Predators come into being?
It does answer for the observant how the Nostromo ends up there (fans will understand)
It does answer where the 'Alien' beasties come from and why.
It would be near impossible to recreate the John hurt moment and really you shouldn't expect it. the suspense and shock levels are there and the effects and cinematography are up there with any blockbuster!
Bril cast! Especially Fassbender!
Here's looking forward to the next installment.

I don't tend to identify with hero's or heroines in movies as for me they just have to have a story line that makes sense and entertains.
I def don't indentify with any of the strong women who are always the hero of the 'alien' movies apart from the predator series which had arnie, Glover and Brody in some if them.
You see caring about this cast wasn't really relevant because you new full well that no one was going to survive...... Or were they?
As I said in another reply it has raised other questions and possible movies seem more than plausible and likely... |

His reason for blondness will be explained |
