Her Maj became Queen on her father's death (1952). Coronations take a while to organise so that's why it didn't happen till '53 but as soon as one Monarch dies, the next one is promoted, i.e. The King is dead, Long live the Queen  |

"If the Queen's father died in 1952 and she was crowned Queen in 1953, why is this year the Diamond Jubilee? Am I missing something????"
The "Oficial Ceremony" took place more than a year later as is traditional, as doing it so soon after the King died would be considered inappropriate when everyone was mourning the King's passing! |

The coronation usually takes place several months after the death of the previous monarch, as it is considered a joyous occasion that would be inappropriate when mourning still continues. This also gives planners enough time to complete the elaborate arrangements required. For example, Elizabeth II was crowned on 2 June 1953, despite having ascended the throne on 6 February 1952, the instant her father died. The throne is not left vacant and the new monarch succeeds the old one immediately. |

She hasn't sat on the throne for the full 60 years, she does get off it to go for a wee walk every now and again! 
Being the Monarch is commonly known as being "on the throne" so it is 60 years. |
