Stop with all this black lives matter bullshit . Things like this make the divide even more evident ! EVERY life matters not just black lives, not white lives , not asian lives but ALL of us.

We shouldn’t be standing up just because this guy was black . We should be standing up because a man, a human was mistreated in a manner which goes against everything and lost his life because of the actions of another human !

Doesn’t matter if you’re black or white , your life still matters just as much as the person next to you

Yes. ALL lives matter. We should all be equal. We are all equal in my eyes. But we are not the same! We are not in danger simply because we are white. BLACK lives are the ones at risk right now. To think colour is irrelevant is pretty naive. If he had been white it wouldn’t have even escalated to an arrest, that’s how different it is. White people can go for a jog through a nice neighbourhood without people shooting because they think they’re criminals. Not acknowledging privilege is part of the problem.

Had it on my status. Blacklivesmatter.

And to those saying all lives matter. Yes they do. But I don't see whites get treated that way. Racism is deeply rooted particularly in America.

Have you seen the video of the white person in the car waving at the camera feeling totally comfortable.

The next car along has black people. Police force entry and taser them. Disgrace.

Meanwhile trump hides in his bunker. The shame.

Police are meant to be there to protect people. Not kill them.

Also reported last nights news that in Washington the vast majority were peaceful protests. But that camera crews witnessed people standing on their doorsteps peacefully protest be shot at with rubber bullets by the police.

The police were kneeling with the protesters. Photos were taken. Then they began to shoot, throw tear gas etc. You only need to go on twitter to see how just bad it is.

People riot because they haven’t been heard.

Protests at the beginning of May because of covid19. White people were screaming in the polices faces, nothing was done. Black people do a peaceful protest? Hmm...

Incidents of black on white violence does not equal the same as a pattern and a history of discriminatory behaviour. The likelihood of a white person even having the police called on them in the George Floyd situation is close to zero. Look at all the videos of police being called because black people dare to walk round or even, god forbid, live in a nice neighbourhood.

"Stop with all this black lives matter bullshit .

He was murdered BECAUSE he was black. Don't you see?! That is the fucking issue. He would not have died if he was white! That is why we must speak up for black people. Because we are treated differently. Racism exists. It is everywhere. Fuck sake people. Wake UP!pretty sure if a white person was treated the same way they would of died too... there's stories out there that arent even being mentioned, like the elderly white man being punched in the head continuously to death by a black carer... nothing has been mentioned about that on mainstream media just in a newspaper.

Racism works both ways unfortunately.

NO IT DOESN'T!!!!!!

HE DIED BECAUSE HE WAS BLACK! THAT SCUM WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN STOOD ON A WHITE MAN'S NECK. PEOPLE ARE DYING BECAUSE OF THIS ATTITUDE! STOP WHITEWASHING SHIT!"

Racism does work both ways. If people believe it doesn't, then they are delusional. I've seen examples of all kinds of racism, even black on black racism. No one is whitewashing (am I allowed to use that term even?) and it was horrific what happened, it doesn't excuse the rioting and looting. I hope the police officer responsible gets locked up for life.

I am white. I recognise my privilege. This doesn't erase my other privileges. It just means I don't suffer from this particular systemic oppression, and may benefit from it.

I'm horrified by what's happening. Not just in the US. I'm horrified by attempts to erase or minimise it. And that is not enough, and I'm working to do more.

Black lives matter.

People saying “all lives matter” either arent getting it, are inherently prejudiced or just dont understand why black people speaking up makes them feel uncomfortable.

In short, rather than post “all lives matter” try to understand first.

I find this thread hugely depressing. I'm white, and I'm very glad of that. I have no idea what it's like to be black. But I do know that if you are black you are disproportionately likely to be arrested, and to die in police custody. When people say black lives matter, they aren't saying back lives matter more, just that black lives matter EVERY BIT AS MUCH!

Thats fine! We should feel uncomfortable! What we shouldnt do is use our priviledge to diminish the BLM movement with empty platitudes about how “all loves matter”.

If we feel uncomfortable we must educate ourselves, learn to understand & LISTEN to what people are saying. We’ll never fully understand, but we can learn to all be more empathetic.

Feeling uncomfortable is a good thing as long as we use that feeling correctly!

And refuses to admit there is an issue or talk about it. It's just all about his power and how he can enforce it. Sad times.

We all need to be better at challenging systemic racism. We need to listen more & we need to be more open to reducing our own privilege to increase that of others. We need to stand strong & use our given privilege to empower others without that. That means holding power to account & educating the next generation properly.

Yep. It’s all super simple stuff really. The only thing we have to focus on is actually doing this otherwise every white person who has spoken up to then do nothing has wasted everyones time. We have to say it AND mean it.

This is exactly why this dicussion needs to be had. Knowing a successful black individual does not mean these people havent faced racism in their every day lives or wont face systemic racism at some point. Wealth doesnt equate a life free from prejudice for the colour of ones skin.

As well, an individual being successful does not diminish the point of the BLM movement. Many successful black people have overcame odds greater than that of any average white person. Just because your boss is well off it doesnt make him any less likely to have faced discrimination & racial profiling.

At the same time, nobody is asking you to feel guilty - we’re asking people to be understanding, empathetic, human & above all else - not racist

He will still be questioned and thought to not own his fancy car and be assumed to have stolen it

He's less likely to survive a police stop in America.

The UK is one of the least racist countries I have ever had the privilege to visit, and live in albeit for a short time. Even I, with my Nigerian heritage, think that "Black lives matter" is an inflammatory statement as such and should be amended to "Black lives matter too". I have experienced very little racism in the UK and I think it is totally unfair that the good white people still suffer the accusations of racism as they are always associated with the bad. When the riots and looting happen, the good still suffer.

Thank you, someone posted it.

Black lives matter, its so important that we focus on that and stop trying to make this inclusive of everyone. Society has been focused on keeping white people comfortable for too long. It's time to look at and acknowledge the uncomfortable truth that our society is built on years and years of racist behaviours and attitudes.

Its up to us to change that.

I'll say it again, black lives matter.

"The UK is one of the least racist countries I have ever had the privilege to visit, and live in albeit for a short time. "

Again - this needs to stop. We have to stop equating our own PERSONAL experience with it being the experience of a vast number of people. Growing up with a black best friend I can tell you that the UK is as racist as anywhere else. His skin colour was the source of abuse he recieved & I have seen him racially profiled by police on several occasions. The UK has also deported legal citizens to countries they were never born or lived in purely because of their black heritage.

Just because YOU dont see something - it doesnt mean it doesnt exist.

As far as I’m concerned I’ll continue to call out any racism if I encounter it in person as I have done all my days but there’s not much else a little person like myself can do

I’m not allowed to have an opinion on what’s happened in America. The death of George Floyd is inexcusable and the police involved should be strung up but the people (of all races in these crowds) burning out businesses, looting and beating up property owners only works against any movement that’s looking to move forward no matter what colour your skin or what opinion you hold

That’s my two cents and no doubt it’s wrong and someone will find something to pick at

I really don't think that's a fair statement. In some cases yes..... but not all.

i think it is.... because it shows a complete nievity or lack of understanding.....

how many white people who stick their hands up at the moment and say "yes i gladly swop my position in live for a black man!"???

really???????

i believe i've had to work twice as hard and be twice as good to get to where i am at....

how many times have you had people cross the road when they see you coming?

how many times have you been stopped and searched for no reason?

you have to absolutely understand the inequilties in life and recognised and acknowledge them before we can truely talk about change...

"Stop with all this black lives matter bullshit .

You are completely missing the point! And this response is part of the problem.

Yes. ALL lives matter. We should all be equal. We are all equal in my eyes. But we are not the same! We are not in danger simply because we are white. BLACK lives are the ones at risk right now. They are who need our help. You wouldn't stop shining a light on breast cancer research because other cancers exist, right?

"

Try telling that to the white farmers in South Africa who are tortured and murdered daily through racial hatred. Maybe you should shine a light on them too, because from where I’m at, it’s exactly the same thing but you didn’t make a thread about them. Racial divide is wrong and humanity dictates that everyone’s life matters.

I disagree. Personal experiences equate to a reality that mob mentality does not, and should be shared to come to a truthful conclusion. An analogy. If you are a parent and have 3 kids at school and one is being bullied defending and supporting the bullied kid doesn't take anything away from your love for the other 2 does it? For all 3 kids to be happy you need to address the problem of just 1.

I think what this poster highlights is the psychological impact the term Black Lives Matter has on how we interpret what it stands for. For the poster, and clearly many others on here judging by the comments, it seems segregational and valuing one group over another. If the movement was called Fuck You Racism then more people would probably get on board.

Look into Psychological Construction and the Conceptual Act Theory for more details.

Why do white people on here think Black Lives Matter is an attack on them? Standing up and supporting black people does not mean you look down to white people. Your fragile egos need to understand this.

To say "all lives matter" is to dilute the issue. The issue now is that POC are being killed just for being black. This does not happen to white people.

Yes, white people have been killed by police, but black people are disproportionately killed by police.

The UK is not a perfect place. Black people get stereotyped by police all the time.

Why do you feel victimised when someone says "black lives matter"?

Things like the George Floyd murder will continue to happen in USA...it's a clear sign of how primitive they are as a country but what exactly are we supposed to do? Threaten USA with a good spanking on the botty if they don't start treating humans of non-Caucasian origin in a civilised manner? Or maybe try to "educate" them? (heaven help us on that one!)

No one is born racist, its all learnt mainly taught by parents or peers...In society as general people tend to congregate with their own social ethnic or cultural peers. In our opinion that is the main issue that stops anywhere becoming a racist or prejudice free society. Who honestly has visited an area where you are the minority, be it religious, race or just cultural you feel nervous, need we say more..

All lives matter, yes, but there’s a real tangible problem in America for black people. It’s finally, tragically, a demonstrable fact.

But looting and destroying property isn’t the way to go about change. And it really does look like the violence and destruction is being committed by middle class white people hijacking BLM’s agenda.

"So where were all you warriors when Mugabe was ordering the killing of white farmers? Where were all the voices screaming white lives matter? Where was the white privilege when the white women were being gang r***d on his orders? Delusional hypocrites saying white people don't know what it’s like to be discriminated against"

You're going back 20 years to give an example of racism against white people, which shows you just how rare extreme attacks on people with white skin are.

This has been very enlightening, it’s good to know those who are looking to be educated and those who don’t want to be. The block button is now on a break.

Only those basking in the glow of white privilege could respond to black lives matter with all lives matter, whilst constantly looking for outlying incidents to try and play it down.

Racism can be against any race there is no definition that favors another race. Having said that our Western and Eastern establishments are built of racist ideals, policies, marketing and actions. In America for example it’s really detrimental to the African Americans and Native Americans. Racism isn’t right but I don’t think you are ever going to remove it, some deplorable people will use.

What we should be recognizing is governments, police forces and anywhere else that allows this to happen. I’d be amazed if that was the first time that cop did anything racist. The first time anything happened he should be up to a public board.

Until we stop accusing each other of being racist and actually start taking responsibility and actions it isn’t changing.

We shouldn’t be standing up just because this guy was black . We should be standing up because a man, a human was mistreated in a manner which goes against everything and lost his life because of the actions of another human !

Doesn’t matter if you’re black or white , your life still matters just as much as the person next to you

No one is saying that isn't true but the problem is why was he killed? The crime didn't fit the response and this is issue. It's also why it's becoming a bigger matter as this happens in the UK aswell.

Unfortunately it was the Police officer involved that made the decision how to handle the situation.

Until the results of the offical enquiry into the man's death are published we can only guess.

"

Just look at the recent Windrush scandal or families of people being sent to countries they have never been in because the government can't find their paperwork.

If you're asking if the death of black people by police officers is happening here it does happen but at no where near the levels of the US.

You say it was the police officers decision to act that way but there were 3 others with him pinning the man down and not stopping him, they are also responsible for the repercussions of the actions of that day.

Listening and agreeing are two very different things. People are listening on here or they wouldn't respond. There is a lot of intolerance here but that's because the post is about the issue that's happening. Telling people it's not as big a issue as they believe or claiming that all lives matter when everyone already knows that we should treat people equal just angers supporters of these riots. You are allowed to express your opinion but telling people who disagree with you that they're not listening is counter intuitive

Both need to be heard and understood, but I am seeing the most intolerance for the latter. Changes will happen when everybody respects and listens to each other without prejudice.

Why do we need to listen to the "all lives matter" people at this moment?

People who insist on trying to dilute the conversation this way have an agenda of diverting attention away form the issue.

Not every opinion need to be respected. For example I don't respect Trump, or other racists. Why should we give their views as much weight as normal people's views!"

"Normal" people's views??????? Who are you to decide who is "normal" or not? That is an inflammatory statement made by a white person who thinks they are better than others, whether it is intelligence, upbringing or skin colour. You are not, you are equal.

People dont like to be made to feel uncomfortable about a situation they have never been in or circumstances that dont relate to them. Rather than listen and try and understand its all 'what about this' instead to try and stop them feeling bad about things that are pretty fucking awful.

I disagree, I think those saying all lives matter are correct but it is almost always used as a way of dismissing the issue.

Is it? How do you know that? Generalising is not helpful. Remember, you are not always dealing with the same level of intellect as you but all should have a voice."

It might not be intentional but it is always dismissing the issue, that’s why that movement was created. It’s condescending when people try and generalise an issue rather than letting the people who are angry be angry.

"Stop with all this black lives matter bullshit .

STOP WHITEWASHING SHIT!

He died because someone was knealing on his wind pipe.

Stop confusing the facts with your opinion.

In what way is it happening in the UK?

Just look at the recent Windrush scandal or families of people being sent to countries they have never been in because the government can't find their paperwork.

If you're asking if the death of black people by police officers is happening here it does happen but at no where near the levels of the US.

You say it was the police officers decision to act that way but there were 3 others with him pinning the man down and not stopping him, they are also responsible for the repercussions of the actions of that day.

Yes I am asking if the deaths of black people by UK Police officers is on the rise. Where is it happening and why?

The other officers involved in the incident will obviously be held accountable for thier actions or lack of. Again they made decisions that resulted in a man's death.

"

There hasn't been a rise here or in the US, the riots aren't just about the killing of black people by police officers but the while way they are treated by their governments and police.

You say the officers will be held accountable but there have been too many instances of officers getting away with these things regularly. They don't lose there job or get punished beyond taking administrative leave while their friends investigate and claim nothing was wrong.

I think from reading through a lot of folk are getting upset and defensive at being accused of aiding and abetting racism by not being openly anti racist. I see a lot of social media accusing white people of being silent on the issue, but I don’t see that in the protests and public outpouring of emotion for this murder and the plight of black Americans. I saw a sea of white faces at the London protests. That’s encouraging.

Like most intense subjects these days it’s easy to descend into tribalism and shout at each other. Barking that people are showing ‘white fragility’ when they rile at being called racist for not doing enough doesn’t help. Imagine being black and a white person calling you racist because you didn’t show enough empathy to a subject like the situation in Zimbabwe? It’s insulting and doesn’t achieve unity. Likewise just saying ‘all lives matter’ in response to black lives matter doesn’t help. It diminishes the issue.

I don’t think anyone is in fundamentally in disagreement here.

"

This 100%. If you don't know what white privilige is it's because you're white and priviged! "

Tell that to the white homeless guy that had all his possessions set fire to by protesters.

Tell that to the white guy who died in almost the exact same circumstances as George...

Let's see the outrage at the death of a black female police officer in America.

Or do black lives only matter if they aren't wearing a badge?

This goes deeper than just racism.

There needs to be massive changes in the police and the community.

In America approximately 13% of the population is black.

Black victims account for 52% of murders, with 88% of the suspects/murderers being black.

Approximately 52% of police officers murdered on duty are murdered by black people.

Drugs, poverty are a huge problem for the black community in the USA and here but to a lesser degree, whether this down to lack of opportunities and education due to racism within the system I don't know.

What I do know is that if an American police officer of any sex or colour is called to deal with a black person, their risk assessment is going to be heightened, the black person seeing a police officer is going to have a heightened sense of fear or anger.

Straight away something simple has become a tense situation before a single word has been exchanged.

People are blaming this squarely on the police.

In this particular case the officer is guilty of murder/manslaughter, I don't understand American law but to blame every officer, every white person is wrong.

Black, white, Hispanic, Asian people are using this to cause decision, they loot, vandalise, beat people etc they are doing nothing for this cause of for racial harmony.

Yet they will stand up and proudly say they did it for George, his family say he would not have wanted this.

Read carefully and guess from the context.....

Nope?

"Normal people", in this context are non-racists. There isn't a word for "non-racist", (as far as I know), because it's normal. Hence the phrase "normal people".

All lives matter?

This is a narrow minded outlook, have all lives always been privileged? Have all lives faced discrimination, oppression, profiling?

The Matter at hand isn’t about all lives but it’s to bring awareness injustices faced by the black community, being judged because of the colour of your skin is something that we (White people) will never understand and thats why we need to stand up and support, raise awareness and educate others on the Black Lives Matter movement.

Saying ‘All lives matter’ make you just as bad as those who actively take part in racial discrimination.
