Always been interested in language and translation , particularly the day to day greetings and customs like “How are you?” I often reply “I don’t know, it’s too deep and profound a question.”
One tribe in Africa asks “Who’s your uncle”, because their culture is very interdependent, so they need to understand how this person fits. Our uncle is Nick Helm, we love him, we’re blessed to have such an amazing uncle.
In Indonesia we ask “where are you going?” - we want to know what’s occurring, we’re nosey, the reply (Jalan, Jalan) means “just walking”. You end the conversation by saying “oh”
Another in SE Asia translates as “What news” (they have no WiFi) and the reply is simply “no news” because in that village nothing ever happens.
