Jupiter looking pretty bloody bright tonight, looking to the east and slightly south, not much higher than a 3 story building.
If I lived in the country I'd definitely buy a telescope |

"I used to have a 6" Tasco reflector when I lived out in the sticks, but sold it when I moved into the city centre "
Pretty much all I can see in thr city is the planets and the close constellations. Still glorious |

I have a relatively dark garden and love to stargaze from it.
However if anyone finds themselves in tenerife. Do the teide by night tour. Not only do they ply you with champagne but you get to go in a pitch dark area of mount teide and have a guide with a laser pen point out different constellations etc.

Whilst I'm not much of a stargazer normally with living in a city with a lot of light pollution, I love it when I'm out on exercise with the army using night vision kit as it makes the sky look amazing at night, you can see so much more through it. I was out on exercise in Croatia last year in a really remote area and the sky at night was the best I've seen it! |

I envy all you people with access to dark skies... the few times I have had that experience it made me realise how much our ancestors must have all been stargazers.
Imagine that display every single night. It's so beautiful... |

There is such a lot to see up there, I love listening to all the legends that were made up from looking at the stars and their patterns. |

We get a crackin view of the sky. Spent many nights laying on the grass staring up for hours!
We drove to killin for our honeymoon & on the way stopped half way to lay on the car bonnet because the sky was breath taking! |

It's just perfect to be sitting out in the garden of an evening, warm cloudless nights, and my scope on the decking, bottle of beer by my side
The AONB here is applying for "dark sky" status and we've got a local pressure group to change over the street lamp reflectors so that the light actually goes downwards |

I know a smallholding with accommodation in Alentejo, Portugal that sells itself on its location in a 'dark sky reserve'. (And to other groups that it's so secluded you can go nude and be free to do what you want on the property.)
I would have just been on my way back from there if it hadn't been for the epidemic.

That sounds like heaven, I wonder how long I could spend there before I needed to be vack in the city... not that the city is doing me any favours right now... |
