£50K redundancy - would you take it?

If your employer offered you £50K redundancy next week, would you take it? Or would you try and keep your job with them?
Considering the volatile job situation currently with so many people losing their jobs, and the unknowns of when jobs may be available in the next couple of years. |

No. I’d be tempted but realistically £50k is not enough. Though it’s all relative on where you live in the country I guess. For me it’s less than my annual salary so not much of an incentive. £150k then we talking |

As I own the company then that would be difficult but have been there previously and received a severance package from my old employer.
It was fair and enabled me to buy into the business that we now own outright. |

Yup, and I’d do what I did 20 years ago again, bought a van and a Soundsystem and buggered off round Europe. Seems about the only sensible thing to do these days |

I would. Mainly because I'm in an industry where I cam walk out of one job today and be in another tomorrow. Plus 50k is over 2 years pay for me, so no rush to find work |

This. I could happily have a few months off to job hunt for the right role or do something part time for a bit of a rest. |

I would.
However i wouldn’t underestimate the amount of folk currently looking for work. We had a job advertised that before Covid we would have struggled to get interested applicants for, and within two days we had over 50 plus applicants for it ![](/icons/s/eek.gif) |

equates to a wage of just over £2000 a month for 2 years, so no, could earn more than that in 2 years, that is, unless i had another job with similar money to walk straight in to after accepting my 50k |

That's just over my salary,1 year salary which won't last long to then have to find another job which probably wouldn't pay as much,I wouldn't even consider it. |

The best way to financial security is to keep working and keep progressing , taking redundancy is nearly always a huge mistake. Unless you have a good business ready to personally loan 50k to I’d say no. |

50k is fuck all in reality.
Although I work for myself so it will never happen. If I did have a staff job, even if I didn't like it I probably wouldn't take it. |

I can take that £50k anytime I want, but then it will affect my cashflow. I am also a crazy spender so that money will only last for maybe 4 months max! |

I get a lot of people saying it does not match their salary. But I’m confident I could find an identical role within a few weeks and be £50k up plus my normal salary |

If my employer offered me £50k tax free then yes I would take it.I was offered voluntary redundancy in 2014 , 2015 and in £28K in 2016 but at that stage in my life I wasn’t ready to go. |

I took 40k a couple of years ago in my early 50s
Best move i ever did.
I had confidence in my abilities, now run my own consultancy and turn over 100k +
I am quite specialised in what I do (I test government computer systems for security vulnerabilities and Disaster Recovery processes), love the challenges it brings.
Just dont blow the redundancy on material things.. reinvest in yourself and reap the rewards.
Or blow half on a new car and put the rest on Red at the Casino! |

"No - not even a year’s salary.
Where you working to make 50k-a-year ? That's 4k-a-month, 1k-a-week, pretty good no ?"
Yeh, if you don’t pay tax & ni, or have any other deductions such as pension! |

You are left with about £2600 a month after these deductions plus a company car |

I'd take it in a heartbeat. It's 6 months money and I've been approached a couple of times during this month for new contracts. The reason I've not gone for it is because the current role is perm where the contracts are for 6 or 12 months, but if they offered to pay me off I would certainly go. It's a good enough buffer for me to take my time finding a new contract that's actually fun rather than just chasing cash. |

I'm sick if my job infact I fucking hate it!
There's little hope of finding anything else with the world as depressing as it is right now - so I'd take the 50K and run! |

I'm going to be offered something in the region of that amount and probably more if they do it as it has been done before but there is no way I'm going to take it, I'd be screwed if I did.
Hopefully it's not pushed onto me by compulsory redundancy either but if that the case then life will change in a big way, house gone, car gone and downsize everything.
Good luck to anyone else finding themselves in this position, it's not pleasant and I've been through this 5 times already with the same company over the years. |

Seeing alot of mixed opinions and moreso people siding to not take it.
I must admit, i would 100% take it simply because for what i have gained in experience (as a manager) i simply earn less than i should, that 50k would be over 3 years worth of wages for me and would like to ideally find a new job anyway as the one (i feel). I'm currently stuck in, isn't beneficial for me x |

"No. I have too much Final Salary pensionable service to be bought off" maybe so but don't forget your going to spend the rest of your working life paying for corona virus pay outs all investments are dropping like stones at the moment

I'd take it. For me, like most people, that's a lot of money.
It's more than double the average UK income, after tax and NI.
Before the virus, there were 8.2M working poor in this country. Nobody's going to be offering them a £50K pay off. |

Likewise. Wouldn’t last an evening on the gold souk would it ? I try to kill as much revenue as possible before it becomes cash or me and my lot just burn through it..... holidays, drones, gadgets, clothes, jewellery can easily get through 5-10 a month if not careful |

Probably go travelling with it... I know I can pretty much snap a job up anywhere in the world with my qualification - job security ![](/icons/thumb_up.png) |

you would have to consider your age, the voluntary redundancy/ enhanced package against what you would get if being made redundant(statutory redundancy payments)if employer went bust. |

If so_eone wanted me redundant then I'd probably go, regardless of money. I work by the theory that if you do a good job they you'll get looked after.... I don't want so_eone's 50k if I'm not worth it, but then maybe I'm lucky to be able to say that.... ![](/icons/rainbow.png) |
