Fortunately I've never been taken so ill that I've had to have hospital treatment, but as I holiday a lot in Egypt I nearly always have a touch of King Tut's revenge and miss a day of the hol....my toiletry bag always includes a coupla packs of diareze, hand cleanser(especially after handling money) and a bottle of Indian Brandee (been using that for upset stomachs since I was a toddler)

Anyone who travels outside of the Euro zone would be foolish to do so without making every effort to protect themselves....your local pharmacist and health shop will sell you most of what you need to take with you.

As regards food poisoning....most cases of 'food poisoning' suffered abroad are in fact little more than a severely upset stomach due to poorly treated water, exposure to the sun, and dehydration.

Start your protection a full 14 days before travelling and the chances are you will be alright.

Sorry to hear that

I've known loads of people who have been to Dom Rep and been ill.

It seems most tourists there get some sort of food poisoning!

It's meant to be lovely but for that reason I wouldn't go

It does make you wander about things though, if they came over here for a holiday and were ill they would get free treatment

We have been out to the Dominican republic a few times now and never had a problem!

Whilst on holiday last year in Malta i had a very painful kidney infection, but just carried on with the holiday as normal and went to the Dr when we came home

Been very lucky with holidays, although when i was in Turkey some years back my daily visits to the toilet became tiresome!

Having taken my breaks in recent few years in norfolk, food poisioning hasnt been an issue, just the amount of falling down water consumed, i blame Adnams for that one tho..lol

Always take stuff from pharmacy. And take probiotics as well. Eat sensibly too

My first aid kit is the biggest thing in my luggage, take something for everything and use it at the earliest opportunity so youcan avoid becoming dreadfully unwell and necessitating an early return.

And don't forget Coke rehydrates you beautifully with tummy upsets - just let it go flat first.

Sorry to hear that your daughter has been ill Jo.

Unfortunately if you are unlucky enough to get food poisoning requiring hospital treatment, be it salmonella, listeria or a whole manner of other nasties, then a sachet of Dioralyte bought for your travel kit is not going to help you.

Hopefully they got fluids into her intraveneously to prevent dehydration and she will start to feel better after a few days. Should be reported in case of an outbreak at the hotel

Hi i hope your daughter recovers well to full health. WE are always worried about health insurance as Nick is in remission with cancer, unfortunately it was an extremely aggressive form of cancer of which he is only one of eight people to survive it in two years in the whole country, we are always bulletproof with our cover like that as God knows what it would cost if Nick was to fall ill

Do you find it hard getting insurance cover and I bet its very expensive when you do.

Hiya iconic1, yes it can be very mad, we wanted to do Florida but was quoted over £2400 just insurance, what makes it worse is that Nick is a professional singer/guitarist and has played all over the world so he cant get insurance to play abroad for the next couple of years, the insurance company called him "plutonium kryptonite", uninsurable !

Most?.....I've been there twice, I did have a dodgy tummy on one visit but it certainly wasn't food poisoning. There is a massive difference between a tummy bug and food poisoning.

My sons have also made a few visits between them, I think my eldest had a touch of the runs on his last visit but again certainly nothing as serious as food poisoning.

I think some people do take any sign of a 'Delhi Belly' as something far more sinister when travelling abroad.
