How long should you diet for?

Jump to: Newest in thread

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

It depends but the short answer is ofcourse as long as it takes to reach your goal, for me who follow a summer diet my goal is when I cant pinch so much body fat on the sides and when the abs are showing that tells me that I have reached my goal, how long are you dieting for and what are you goal weight?

I would suggest that making a lifestyle change and generally eating better choices would be better than following a diet short term as your likely to like weight back on once you stop dieting

I don't think anyone should diet with the aim of it ending. Changing food habits for ever seems much more positive and effective in my opinion.

Should you ever diet or just re-train/adjust your eating habits?

Agreed. I've never been on a diet myself but have had to make permanent changes recently on medical advice.

London/Essex... ish... Romford to be exact

I diet for short term but look to develop habits for the long term. As I am not able to lift weights currently I am not impacted so much by a big calorie deficit so am on a cut. I don't have any scales to weigh myself but have definitely lost fat whilst preserving muscle but it is fairly minimal. I like the feeling of being lean so will just continue this gradual journey I guess as there is no pressure to eat out or drink.

I think it depends on your goals whether to diet etc. If you just want to be healthy then it is just about a lifestyle change I guess.

I’m on 14 day lockdown in hospital and will diet until my blood sugar levels come down to normal instead of being four times too high.

Going to be a shit fab bed filled two weeks.

I'm dieting until I reach my target weight, then I'll change to a maintenance lifestyle (diet + exercise) that I can maintain.

At least that's the plan!

There is actually no need to "diet" if you burn more calories than you consume the you will lose weight or fat. It's as easy as that really.

What sort of diet you do?? Zero carbs, more cardio, both, slight calorie defect or what?

For me it's always the same food, just more or less of it depending on the weight goal at the time... It's a simple ratio of calories in/out

Leaned down in recent years but when I was an 18 stone lump, was consuming 5,500 calories a day over 6/7 meals. Still have 6/7 meals now just smaller ones, cause I'm smaller

The old saying rings true - "you are what you eat" ...

Yes I am in a slight calorie deficit. I dont do macros, all I do is to aim to hit my daily calories of 2600 which is 18200 calories weekly. I like to stay super strict during the week and on the weekend I allow myself abit more calories, that means I have to do 3 days a week of even lower calories which gives me about 500 extra calories which I then put in the bank to then use for the weekend.

I also do alot of cardio such as cycling on the exersice bike and walking, what do you do?

I've started a diet 2 weeks ago. Lost 9 lbs. Not reached my goal yet, but am at a comfortable place now to adjust my eating habits that in turn will get me to my goal.

I've dieted on and off for 30 years.

Healthy eating and exercise is the formula, but just can't stick to it.

My weight goes up and down more times than a prostitutes knickers.

What helped with me was changing the word diet which has always had a negative impact for me to lifestyle change...I could never go back to my eating pattern as it was unhealthy and also wasn’t good for my mental health...

If you have been overweight then watching your diet should continue for the rest of your life, because if you stop paying attention to your diet, and eat like you used to, then your weight will go back up again. I have never been above 11.5 stone and my target weight is 11 stone. If I ever go above 11 stone I watch what I eat so that it comes back down again. I weigh myself most days first thing in the morning so I never go above by more than a pound or so.

Set yourself a target weight and reduce your calorie intake so you come down to it. Once you are under your target weight, eat a little more and treat yourself occasionally but if you ever go above it then straight back on the reduced calorie diet. You will soon learn how much you can eat to stay around your target weight, but weigh yourself every day so you never have more than a pound or so to lose to get back to your target.

personally I think it’s very unhealthy to weigh more than once a week as you can easily get fixated on weight and numbers ...Weight can fluctuate on a daily basis especially for women so doing it on a weekly basis will give you a better understanding of how you are doing...

Shag I actually understand why you ask this

Not many can or do lose weight sustainability

However I get the impression you go through the euphoric phase of "oooo this is easy "

It's actually frightening

So your x very low fat

You're in fat loss mode and it's easy

You cannot go forever you need to stop however you know when you stop you will not find the butter zone you will eat carbs because fuck it you can

When do you stop

Me I stop around 5 kg total body fat x

And start again about 8 kg

Cant stand being over 8 kg fat

From what I'd call a normal diet eg eating what I fancied to cutting down on carbs a bit to lower my blood sugar.

That is right and yes you cant go on forever either. I do it for 6 months then a 6 months slow bulk. I usually bulk up about 5 or so kgs. I like the process of switching between the different phases of it.
