"I can. Not particularly well because I hate it and have always avoided it whenever possible." Why you hate though is there any reason
"I love the water. Both in, under and on. There is a freedom which land does not give. Dislike pools though, they are often disgusting. Open water or rivers is where it is at. If anyone knows any good places to swim in Manchester/London, holla! " Can't beat the sea I'm my opinion

"I can. Not particularly well because I hate it and have always avoided it whenever possible. Why you hate though is there any reason " A few......I can’t hold my breath underwater; no matter what I do, water just goes straight up my nose. Consequently I hate having my face underwater unless I’m breathing out (whilst swimming) and I have no desire to wear one of those daft nose clips. I never figured out how to dive, mostly because of the aforementioned. I just really don’t like doing it....I get nothing from it at all.

"I cannot swim. I'd a bad experience at age 8, when I went with all my classmates from school, to the local Council Baths in Croydon, Surrey. The instructor's style was to shout loudly at every pupil, & I recall his first lesson so vividly. We weren't allowed water wings, as he said they were for "babies, not children". Then he held a long pole 6" under the surface of the water, the pole at right angles to the poolside. We'd to duck under the pole to go from one side to the other; this was to acclimatise us to water. It created terror amongst quite a few of us; when we didn't comply, we were made to sit out the rest of the lesson, whilst he berated us for being wimps! There were complaints about him; after an enquiry, he was dismissed. Swimming instructors have said since his attitude was wrong on all levels. I get scared in water & must have both feet on the floor, otherwise I panic." If you read my post above it sounds very similar to my experience. Maybe the same teacher? I was also in south London.

"I do love swimming in pools but it always takes a bit of extra courage to do sea swimming. As soon as I can Im getting a wetsuit and going sea swimming. " Love swimming in the sea the higher salt content gives you more Bouyancy, especially a nice hot location with Cristal clear waters. And so much more picturesque than the bottom of a pool.
"They tried to flush me down the toilet all those years ago. Yet the fact that I am here years later must tell you something. Yep, I am a teenage mutant ninja turtle. " Which one? Bagsie me for Michaelangelo M

I'm a bit more confident now but still petrified off letting go off the sides in a pool.

Im a lover of water so it seems odd but I do know ppl do have genuine fears of water, is this the same for most that can't swim " I love swimming and also a certified scuba diver. The only thing I can’t do or not very good at is doing somersaults underwater, as water gets up my nose! I do have family members whom can’t swim, but not from fear. They’ve just never been taught. "I can swim and find it weird that some people have never learnt to swim. It's like never riding a bike. It should be a fun activity you do as a kid. Also it's a survival skill. " but when you have a fright as a kid it can totally scare you for life as it did me.

"I do love swimming in pools but it always takes a bit of extra courage to do sea swimming. As soon as I can Im getting a wetsuit and going sea swimming. " Sea swimming is my favourite (if on holiday in a warm country). pool swimming is good, but you are swallowing a little chlorine every time you swim

"It genuinely terrifies me that there are people who don't know how to swim, surely Ice Age 2 was a good warning?! Am a total waterbaby and am very much missing the pool I'm terrified off water. Bad experience as a child. " Adults can be the hardest age range to teach because of the reason you explained. Children generally have no fear of water just a short concentration span.
"It depends on your childhood I suppose. If you grew up near a swimming pool/beach and your parents taught you at an early age you can swim. Like everything else, new skills are harder to learn the older you are." Very much. It was pushed as a life skill for me.

"It depends on your childhood I suppose. If you grew up near a swimming pool/beach and your parents taught you at an early age you can swim. Like everything else, new skills are harder to learn the older you are." I found thats once adults got used to having their face / head under the water and learnt aquatic breathing. It becomes much easier. Your head is the heaviest part of the body, When your head is upright When in the water your legs will sink making it much harder to float and swim. Being streamline in the water is key.
"I can swim and find it weird that some people have never learnt to swim. It's like never riding a bike. It should be a fun activity you do as a kid. Also it's a survival skill. " Sadly I had an ex who neither learnt to swim or ride a bike. He came from a pretty disadvantaged background with an abusive father. It shocked me when I found out as we went to school in the same area and we had mandatory swimming lessons in school. Turns out it's too late by then as he was so embarrassed to be one of the few kids that couldn't swim that he didn't even try to learn.

"We both love swimming, much prefer the openness of the sea, and can often be found skinny dipping along the coast where we live.. nothing like the freedom of not wearing anything.. " So frustrating. My son could swim from age 3 unaided. And when my daughter was born I couldn’t take them both. X
