Assuming evolution is correct, do you think that if humans went extinct another species as intelligent as humans would evolve? If life exists long enough on a planet, is intelligence and consciousness inevitable?

Intelligence and sentience are not necessary to evolve into the apex species. Dinosaurs being the perfect example. If not for a meteor they might never have died out.

"Assuming evolution is correct, do you think that if humans went extinct another species as intelligent as humans would evolve? If life exists long enough on a planet, is intelligence and consciousness inevitable?"

No, it took 1.8 billion years for single cell life to evolve into multiple cell life, in reality evolution shouldn't work that slowly, there are very limited explanations as to how that might have happened

We dont credit other species enough for their intelligence..there possibly would develip a new apex species but its intelligence would not necessarily evolve into that which humans would recognise..besides this planet would possibly welcome a rest from a species such as ours.

Evolution is correct, no need to assume. The emergence of intelligent life is not inevitable. Our extinction is certain.

If something evolves to replace us and attains a similar level of intelligence; hopefully, it will fuck things up less.

Evolutionary theory rests on several assumptions, including that the fittest in a particular environment is most likely to survive and succeed.

If human intelligence is lost, other species with the most appropriate intelligence and fitness for the environment would be theorised to continue. They would not necessarily need to have equivalent capabilities to humans, just to be more fit than the competing species. Over time, adaptive responses to the environment may result in very different outcomes to what we may expect. If certain aspects of physical strength application were most suited to exploitation of an environment, then the species with this, rather than intelligence, could become supremely successful, in comparison with the others.

Intelligence is a limited concept, not being well defined or measurable. If a species predominantly needed to apply some aspects of itself that eliminated the need for much of the intelligence, then selection may make some of that intelligence obsolete, as it may have too high a cost for survival, for example.

The most well suited species will likely prevail for our former environment. If others acquire adaptive benefits that are even better than that species for this environment, then they may could displace the others.

It’s not theory though, wheat and cows have done it, wheat in particular had domesticated humans from hunter gathers and we have had to adapt to take care of the wheat as it has dominated the planet over the last few thousand years

They stop that quick enough if you put their nose in it & give them a smack on the butt, she's so old & habitual now it won't matter & the scent of pee will be through everything right to the floor boards (to her nose). Cats can be taught most things, like don't lie on the washing, pillows, stay off counter tops etc. Always taught mine from kittens (no need to smack kittens, just move them every time before anyone starts, reminding an adolescent though) mind cats should be getting taught by mum & she'll smack/bite them into line (they don't understand words or meanings till older). Older cats not so much I've found lol

Cats are one of the most successful animals in the world with higher kill rates than most other species (hence why new Zealand doesn't let domestics outside, kills the wildlife)

If we go extinct it'll be a very different world to now, there'll be more sea, so some sort of mega sealife & on land it'll probably revert back to a decent balance of predators & prey.

I did have a cat that did that many years ago, there was no teaching her, so I understand some just won't stop. Most do though, we've had them all my days and multiple at once

I know my older cat, I got her as a 7 year old & she used to pee on clothes left on the floor (only on the floor, not a chair) particularly when I had horses, was the horse pee scent on the clothes, now it's only if she's locked in a room without a litter tray.

Still circles my legs like she is a shark anytime I'm in the kitchen, she knows but flaunts it. Turn your back & it's like she's playing "what's the time Mr wolf" lol she'll go out but comes back in as soon as you turn again....she's been stood on so many times, still won't stop.

She's old now (18) & doesn't jump high anymore so she no longer runs away with dinner left on the counter top.

She's a cheeky sod.

Many a time has she ran away with a string of sausages & had me chasing her round the house or sneaked in the living room & stole off the plates when your not paying attention, Rolf.

I'm fecked if my cats would use a scratch post (it's in perfect condition, 10yr on), one likes my couch & the other the stairs carpet *homerslapheaddoh

Intelligence isn't necessary to survive. Sharks and crocodiles have been around way way way longer than humans and as pointed out above we need to survive for a very long time to come to outperform some dinosaur species. It's perfectly conceivable we could be wiped out by a virus or bacteria and not 'replaced' by anything There is nothing that says the most widespread species has to be intelligent, just that it needs to be the best adapted to its environment. Humans are patently not the best adapted for the majority of environments we live in but have used or intelligence to manipulate those environments to suit us. It really isn't the most efficient way of surviving (hence our massive use of energy)

In terms of pure numbers we are a long way down the list of most successful species.

Human dominance is a myth - over half the cells in your body aren't you, they're bacteria and the information stored in your DNA only accounts for somewhere between 1/100th and 1/1000th of the total genetic information you carry around - information that describes bacteria, viruses, fungi and stuff, none of it 'human'. Research is even showing that our mood and behaviour may well turn out to be the results of bacterial chemical behaviour rather than our 'soul'. If you think this is impossible consider how a person's behaviour can be changed by tiny amounts of all kinds of drugs - if bacteria need a certain environment to live and that environment is dictated by our behaviour then the ones that evolve to secret hormones/drugs that increase the chances of us behaving in certain ways will be the best adapted.

The idea of man as ruler of creation is becoming less and less realistic the more we learn about ourselves and the planet we inhabit.

I wouldn’t state that it was inevitable, that we know of its happened only once in 14 billion years in a universe which may as well be infinitely large.

There have been 3 mass extinction, most climate change experts are saying we are already in the mist of the 4th, but it'll be of our own making.

Nature will prevail over anything else.

I can agree about behaviours as I have adhd which they have found in a gene r4 & d4 I think, the same gene, they checked indigenous tribes that have been in that same area (where humans originated from, rift Valley) for millennia (isotope levels in ancient skeletons prove they never moved) and found that they carried high levels of the gene in their tribe.

This tribe is very successful at surviving, hunting & gathering.

The traits of adhd don't vary that much between diagnosed people, the level of how much these traits affects them does.

So basically to back up what someone else said alot of my behaviours I can't help nor prevent & is tuned to the above, survive & thrive. Modern society is a big issue for Alot of adhd folk, we don't tend to fit in & most have adventurous streaks. adrenaline junkies, a trait from the bush of "are you going to eat lunch or be lunch".

We have evolved from chimps to what we are now and if that is true, it makes me wonder if we are still evolving? What will we look like in the future.

Not chimps. We share 99% of our genetic code with most primates I think.

Well according to some scientists we evolved from fish way back.

We are now the only species which survival of the fittest doesn't apply to

I read something about our brains having layers. At the top of the spinal cord we have the most basic structures for life. This is our fish brain, so to speak. Then as our ancestors evolved more complex layers were created. Maybe someone more knowledgable could enlighten us.

That's my point, modern medical advances since the 1900's have almost completely stopped nature playing it's proper role in population control levels, human population has never been so high & it's growing.

On the subject of once being fish, well yes but this was millions of years ago & diversified into all the creatures we see today. If you want to take it further, we come from single celled bacteria at the bottom of the ocean before that & if you wanna go back even further all life on earth were all born in the death of a star (only place hot enough to fuse into carbon) & before that the big bang which made the simplest chemical of hydrogen.

Pre big bang is quantum theory stuff (think antman) very complicated & not yet understood as much as other areas. Such as colours equal chemical make up of an object

Yes I'm a science geek

I don't know about layers but homoerectus discovered fire allowed future homo species such as Neanderthal & homosapiens (modern human) to kill off things like tape worm (it like to invade brains of its host) and it also allowed us to use less energy to eat, it takes far less calories to chew a cooked meat than a raw one & less to chew roots like potatoes, carrots etc. Plus less energy to digest, this allowed for the development into the modern brain which has as many connections as there are stars in the universe.

Objective thinking came about when farming happened 12000 years ago, this allowed time to think & provided safety of guaranteed food sources, less migration and protection from predators, we also figured out how to domestic animals for food.

Interesting fact - look up a picture of a galaxy then look at the patterns in someone's eye, they are very similar.

I think the layers comes from how we develop in the womb. The first part is our amphibian brain. The part of the brain we share with reptiles and frogs.

All organisms share this basic brain. I think.

Not an area I'm that knowledge about but I did find study that surrounds it. https://www.mpg.de/12027342/molecular-atlas-reptile-brain

"Assuming evolution is correct, do you think that if humans went extinct another species as intelligent as humans would evolve? If life exists long enough on a planet, is intelligence and consciousness inevitable?"

Ooooo I love this debate.

I think it's probable, given enough time.

You the suggestion is you need an environment which regularly fluctuates, but not to extremes, forcing changes in atmospheric conditions and plant fauna.

Basically, it selects for adaptability over robustness in layman's terms.

Over hundreds of generations, the idea is Natural Selection selects out energy intensive genes like those fir great size and muscle mass, in favour of individuals whose genes allow for greater knowledge sharing.

You then also have to define intelligence.

I shouldn't get into this, I have work to do.

Intelligence does play it's part, I agree, I don't think nature will evolve to this degree of "intelligence" again though, it's probably learned it's lesson & It's not required to survive & thrive within nature's boundaries.

Intelligence will be more subtle mostly things we take for granted & that many have lost touch with, like knowing seasons, where to find certain foods at different times of year, what poisonous plants to avoid, water sources, what plants can aid healing etc.

I disagree. Nothing is inevitable, but if a collection of genes allow for complex information collection, retention and communication, you're going to get an organism which is going to understand how to manipulate it's environment deliberately. If it can do that, it has a massive evolutionary advantage over any other species, and selection via mating will likely select the strongest candidate.

It isn't a yes no question, it's a probability question.

it's probably learned it's lesson

You think nature is a sentient being? What ever evolves will be due to a mutation of genes nothing more nothing less, if it's intelligent that's an accident that may provide an advantage depending on the situation.
