Actually you do! It’s called self portrait photography. Vivian Maier is quite known with that  nothing compare to mobile phone selfies of course, was definitely more creative and artistic x |

I'd dispute that. In the earlier days of social media (and indeed of amateur internet porn) phone cameras were pretty poor quality, but people still had the same urge to share countless pictures of themselves. Look at old MySpace profiles or late 90s/early 00s amateur porn and you'll see lots of mirror pictures with digital cameras in shot.
It's not a new thing at all, but everyone has a high quality camera in their pocket or handbag at all times these days so photographs in general are more prevalent. |

I cringe when I take pictures of myself. I cringe even more "trying" to pose and/or be professional.
If someone asked to meet up but wanted to know what I was wearing or to verify that I am actually myself I wouldn't say "Hang on, give me 20 minutes whilst I go and get all my camera equipment and setup my scene room to take a nice arty and seductive shot for you." My cringe gland is hurting eight now
HOWEVER
That's not to say I don't appreciate a well thought out and arty pose/photo combo. I think it shows a commendable amount of courage and self confidence, something I don't have. And the results often can be brilliant.
Bottom line - If you want to take a normal selfie of yourself then go ahead. If you want to be more arty and professional, then go ahead  |

My space was not launched until 2003? And wasn't even recognised as social media at the time.
That something that's something that came into the subconscious after new platforms like Facebook and twitter ect. I. Around circa 2010
I'm sure there is the odd photo standing in a mirror with a point and shoot camera. But it wasn't common behaviour like it is now.
If you turned your camera on yourself and took a selfie in public in say 1999 people would think you are mental. Or at least offer to take the photo for you.
Now "the selfie" is its own thing. You rarely see someone ask someone else to take a photo of them. And that most common the younger people get. They want the selfie look
Just a change in the times. Like how we think the side on profile photos Victorians took are odd.
But that's Because before photos silhouette drawings where taken like that.
