I am looking to get a back tattoo, once the coronavirus restrictions have been lifted. I know it will be probably next year, so it gives me to time get the right one.
I was after one of a harris hawk coming into land, the wing tips would be on my shoulder blades.
I am after advice on roughly how long would something like this take, as I doubt it would be in one sitting.
A rough idea of cost of the thing, I sent over few pictures to people before the lockdown. I never got a response back. |

Speaking as a tattoo artist....there is no answer.
It depends on your artist.
You get what you pay for.
Research. Find an artist who specialises in the style you want and speak with them.
Cost is relative to what they charge and artists hourly rate can vary from £40/50 right up to £100s.
There really is no guide.

"No help on costs etc but just a general question. I’m not into tattoos but always wondered Why have a tattoo on your back that you can’t see? "
Many reasons.
Do you out wearing ass-less trousers because you can't see your backside?

Also factor in pain factor! Haha. Mine is taking longer because I’m finding it so painful. I have usually got a high tolerance to pain and have sat for six hours in the past with no problem, but my back is much harder.
It’s weird as have been tattooed many times before on my back, with only one causing issues, but this cover up is killing!
So OP take that into account as well, you could find it bearable or, like me, find it takes longer because of that (and obviously costs more) but with the right artist you’ll have a tattoo worth it all x Viv x |

"You realise you won’t be able to see it?
Not each of my tattoo needs to be seen by my lovely eyes everyday. It’s the existence of it makes the difference. When I miss or realised I forget about them , just turn around in front of a mirror and say ; oh here they are "
It’s a fuck ton of time and money not to see it though!
I’ve wanted a decent tattoo ever since I got my thug tatt at 15.
I just can’t imagine wanting my back done unless I’d run outta space... |

I started to get my tattoos from back at the age of 18 because I was afraid that I will get bored or regret later , then because of my job . It was in a hot country and was not allow to have tattoos (yes they could do that back in the day).
I start to have on my arms after I moved here. My point is everyone has their reasons and vary from the other ![](/icons/rainbow.png) |

I’m having a full back piece as what I want just can’t have justice done to it anywhere else. It needs to be big. It’s covering lots of smaller ones, and is an exciting work in progress for me. Viv xx |

I get what you’re all saying in your personal circumstances and as has been pointed out it’s definitely a personal choice... any body art is.
Still, you won’t see it on your back unless you have a mirrored room or you’re being filmed from behind.

The reason for the tattoo on my back, is that it will give the best amount of room to show her off.
I had a Harris hawk years ago. She caught an illness that she never recovered from. It seems a nice way to remember her.
Thanks for the advice and tips.
I didn't think certain tattoo artists specialise in certain art, I will have to get a decent picture of her and shop around. |

I have a full back piece (with some empty spaces, not all solid), it took about 17 hours over five sittings. They did all the line work in one session, then the rest were filling it in - no going back! Which was probably a good thing as some parts of it (along the spine, and round my kidneys) were pretty brutal.
To those asking, 'why the back', it's a big flat(ish) canvas - the tattoo I wanted wouldn't have worked anywhere else on my body. Plus I never get bored of it and it's a treat whenever I see it in the mirror, and a happy reminder when anyone comments on it! |

I’m starting a full back piece after lockdown too. Which will include my arse cheeks. It’s a full black n grey Buddha wish some other bits around it. Same tattoo artist that did my traditional Japanese sleeve. It might be on my back and I might not see it too much but others will when I’m on holiday or in a club lol. I want to be fully covered apart from face, neck and hands by the time I retire. |

Depending in level of detail, probably 3 or 4 sessions. Depends on your pain tolerance also.
The most I had in 1 session was 8hrs.
My tattoo artist charges €70 per hour but she works outta her home. A shop will charge more.
Be 150% comfortable & sure whatever artist you go with gets you & what you want for such a big piece.
Good luck with it xx

It’s a work of art for others to see, tattoos have meaning that resemble how you feel, inspire you. |
