So I’m usually not the worrying type but... I’m going into hospital on Friday and will have my first op and general anaesthetic ever. It’s doing my head in and making me grumpy, testy and teary in turn.
So.
If I’ve been short with you on here... I apologise.
If you think I’ve been rude... I apologise.
If you’ve sent me unsolicited dick pics which I’ve deleted.... I don’t apologise.

I've been under a few times in my time, longest being... 12 hours, I think it was? Needed jaw reconstruction.
I was made comfortable and felt nothing the whole time before and after. Was a big ol' nap, really.
That was a while back, it's even smoother now I hear. You'll be 'ite. |

Perfectly normal to worry beforehand. You're going into an environment you've probably never experienced so all may seem odd.
But you'll be in the hands of experts who give a damn about your welfare.

It is worrying. You will be in very good hands and in my experience medical professionals in surgical departments are very kind.
I'm not going to tell you not to worry that would be patronising but I can reassure you that you'll be in good hands  |

It’s quite normal what you are feeling, especially the first time. Just try to relax, stay calm as you can and tell the team that you are nervous, they deal with this every day so will know ways to help you.
I’ve found most anaesthetists crack jokes (badly) but it works, my last one went through his assemble of Star Wars voices.

All the very best for your operation. I haven’t had an operation needing a general anaesthetic since I was six. I think I’d feel scared too. Perfectly understandable. Wishing you a full and speedy recovery and a very successful surgery. |

Ive been put under general 4 times in my life and LOVED it! I Wake up all hazy with the giggles, kinda like the empty head gas & air gives you! I gibber some pish for about 6 hours after. My husband was CREASED listening to me last time but i rem_mber being pretty creased too!
Whatever it is your going in for, try to consider that these guys do procedures day in/day out and know what they are doing insude out. They really do have your best interest at heart & will look after you while you're out. I believe a nurse sits with you till you're fully up & alert - but i was out my face from the general & morphiene so maybe imagined that? Lol
I wish you well but you WILL be okay!

Sending you all the love Inca. Echoing the other posters here but it's normal to feel nervous and worried about it. Anaesthetists do these procedures so often and you will get daft jokes so do your best to not groan too loudly.  You'll feel so much better once you've had the operation done. And you'll have my countless rambling check in messages to look forward to as well. |

Hey OP
What is it you’re worried about? I had my first op about 8 years ago. My main problem was needles...... I hate them. There’s an anaesthetic cream that you put on your hand before the main event; after that I didn’t feel anything and I had the bed 5 hours sleep ever. Trust me when I say that it’s okay to feel apprehensive....... the surgical staff see this all the time. Speedy recovery and see you soon |

Can you sense which bit you are mostly worried about? Sometimes if you can figure that bit out you can tackle it.
Tell a lovely nurse .. don't try and hide it. They will reassure you.
It's natural to be worried.
You will be fine.. anaesthetic can make you feel groggy, boost your immune system, rest well and work on the things you have some power over. Make your body strong xxx |

it's natural to feel a whirlwind of emotions, especially to go in during at this time. Although everyone will be masked up etc and it'll look more so frightening, just rem_mber that they'll be doing everything to ensure you get the best treatment in every way.

I have had 4 surgeries in 12 months..slightly different, because they were cosmetic & I chose to go through it.
However, it is daunting. Just rem_mber that your surgical team are professionals & do this all the time.
Put yourself elsewhere in your head..try imagining a situation that made you happy & focus on that. Rem_mber that it's only a short amount of time from your life & will be over very quickly.

Going into hospital can be worrying enough, but I expect the current situation is adding to it.
I hope you have someone to take you and pick you up and look after you until you recover.
Maybe pull yourself a playlist of tracks you love together so you can listen when you come round.
Don't be hard on yourself but I'm sure you will be well taken care of. Just make sure you tell the nurses your concerns so they can keep an extra eye on you too.

OP it's perfectly normal to worry about an operation. In fact it would be a bit strange not to.
I have never had an operation and my biggest worry used to be having a cannula.
However, I needed a test last year which meant me sitting for several hours with one in, and it was perfectly fine.
I am sure everything will go to plan. |

Everyone is worried about having an operation and it must be more concerning now with all the c word issues. Lots of people like to to think that they don't get stressed but most of us do at times. Not sleeping, worrying thoughts flicking in and out of your head, being a bit less patient and snappy are symptoms of this.
Good for you - for recognising and talking about it

Had a hip replacement and circumcised under general anaesthetic had no problems just a bit weird and dreamy when first wake,but you will be fine you’re in good hands with the NHS |

I had an op in Dec_mber and I was terrified. Never been in hospital before and didn’t know what to expect. I told the nurse, and they were reassuring and kind. Express how you’re feeling and let yourself be taken care of. And if you’re worried about being hospital during lockdown, don’t be. We’ve been in and out of hospital more times than I can count since the covid nightmare began. The procedures in place are rigorous and the staff are well aware of heightened anxiety. You’re in good hands. Deep breath, it will all be okay Xx |

I had major 6hr surgery in 2017 due to breast cancer. I just wanted to be knocked out.
You will be fine. Its ok to be nervous. Hospitals are not nice places to be but needs must. You will hopefully be in/out.

I've been under GA twice for abdominal surgery.
The first time, I got a needle from the anaesthetist, I got myself onto the table, the doctor was talking to me about history, and a split second later (it seemed) I was groggy in another room with a sore throat. I had trouble holding down food for several days and was groggy for about a week. They think that was a bad reaction to the GA. No long term consequences.
The second time I barely rem_mber meeting the anaesthetist and I don't rem_mber the OR at all. The following day I was self administering pain relief and got told off for not taking enough. Didn't need it. Decided the ward coffee was crap and wandered off to the cafe, to the horror of all the staff. Very low recovery time.
My most recent surgery was via epidural, so I was awake, and that was weird as hell. |

You poor thing I hope it’s nothing too serious and you can get it fixed. We have the most amazing NHS, not only in times of horrible need like now but in general. The kindest and most caring people. Every single person you meet in hospital will be so compassionate I’m sure.
If it helps the last surgery I had, I was a complete mess and had no one to hold my hand before but after I woke up This absolutely gorgeous man who was sat holding my hand and singing to me. He was dreamy and my first comment apparently was a little naughty! (I never found out what it was) hopefully you will get a fitty too!! |

I always ask to go early on the list due to anxiety - it really helps xx I don’t know why I feel the way I do as have had many surgeries but would just rather get it over & less chance of being bumped.
I do love the feeling of the anaesthetic - I must be weird. And the after surgery sleepiness.
I had major surgery last March and had to stay in over night. I dozed on & off for days. My internet shopping was expensive though - booked a holiday to New York

It is perfectly natural to worry. We would be too.
You will however be well looked after, you will have a nice lomg sleep and hopefully not be in too much pain at all.
Think of all the sexy doctors and nurses you can eye up too.

You will be very well looked after xx I actually made a couple of friends & we’re still in touch which is lovely. I did expect I’d cope with lockdown better after 13 weeks recovery though.

My gorgeous friend of the forums I will be thinking of you this week and especially on Friday sending you every bit of positivity and love.
To make you smile I have only had one operation when all 4 wisdom teeth were removed under general anaesthetic. I got a bit of a shock when 20 minutes before I was due to go down a nurse turned up with a kidney dish and gloves. In answer to the look on my puzzled face I was told she was there to give me a sepository. To which I replied I am having my teeth out! Apparently it was a quick release antibiotic. So knees to chest  . Then on arrival down at the operating theatre I was there was another one! I said I already had one and was then told this was for something else. Honestly
Then when I came round in recovery I was treated with Lois Lois would you move your bottom over. So yes my teeth out involved having my backside hanging out for an hour
I am sure you will be fine. You need to be as we have things to do when the madness is over |

Hard to tell you not to worry when it’s the unknown for you. I’ve had that many under anaesthetic operations starting at the age of 3 I get invited to the hospital Christmas party (joking). The feeling when you wake can be different, the last couple of times I woke up bright as a button and starving where as others I’ve just been sleepy. Never had a sore throat afterwards like others have said even after throat surgery I was fine.
I’m sure all will go well and afterwards you will be thinking what was I worrying about and the anaesthetists are usually jokers so will put you at ease. Think of something nice before you go under and you will have nice dreams |

I cannot wait to hear your story after anaesthetic...
Surgeons are brutal though, I have to have internal fixation on my ankle, surgeon comes to see me pre surgery and is explaining what he is going to do before announcing that the equipment is
'like meccano, I never have many bits left over' I cried, he laughed! 
Then on the day he came himself to wheel me down to theatre abs said 'you'll see the anaesthetist now, he's a nice guy, has a tremor though' 
I cried, he laughed...
Then the anaesthetist came, I was looking for the tremor and and he asked if I was ok... I lost the plot, poor guy. All he could say as he administered the anaesthetic was "can you tell me a joke?"
"Fuck o'...... gone.
Woke up and the nurse said 'ooh about time'
I said 'that didn't take long, it's only 10'oclock"
"No love it's two oclock, you've been under for 5 hours"
Then got upset thinking I had lost the fluffy dog my son had given me... Nope it was with my things, but I needed it then...
Then when that drama was over I got upset thinking I had missed lunch...Poor Nurse had enough at that point asking 'I was told you were a pain but by god'
Just dunno what she meant.
People slate our NHS but they have always been amazing to me and mine |

I’ve been both sides of the operating table and can honestly say, when I had to have emergency surgery I was terrified. Never had surgery before, but the care given, and the natural way in which the staff calmed my fears made it less daunting.
Needing reassurance is natural, and so many can empathise with your fears, so sending you reassuring hugs for now, and healing hugs for post surgery x Viv x |

I’ve been under 3 times, it’s quite fun. Keep yourself healthy between now and then. Get some arnica tablets from boots if you can cos they help with healing if you’re being cut open. The anaesthetist will decide on the day if you’re good for the op. Can’t have and any coughs or sniffles. Avoid caffeine, alcohol, nicotine if you smoke or use nicotine products. Don’t eat any mushrooms, potatoes or tomatoes between now and the op.
Think about aftercare, depends what surgery your having but maybe make some meals in advance to freeze so you don’t have to be doing too much after. |

I am still waiting for the for my replacement knee joints, I think they are waiting to see if Covid19 claims me first
Also waiting for another Cardioversion to see if they can get my heart working properly but that is no big deal other than I cannot take Viagra, the lockdown makes that no big deal either. |
