Convertibles. Roof down or up?
Jump to: Newest in thread
Hello awesome fabbers..
Hope your all safe and sane..
Recently during my travel to work (community social care) I have passed a lot of convertible cars on the road with their roof down. I myself have a convertible mini and long to put the roof down but have been unsure during this time for 2 reasons: transmission of virus and public perception.
What are your thoughts on this?
Is it ok to have the roof down? Do you see someone do this and think negatively about them? If your on country roads and no one in sight is it still ok?

There and to the left a bit |
Isn't the point of having a convertible to put the roof down when the weather allows it?
And unless you're doing some extreme tailgating I don't think social distancing rules would be broken by it |

I think it had a roof but it’s still unforgivable, unless they’re a hairdresser or something and camp / straight I suppose |

Never owned a convertible don’t get enough decent weather in UK to justify one. And agree they don’t look great when the soft top is on |

Absolutely! Anyone driving hood up should have their car seized and their driving license shredded!
I’m shielding but had to take the cat to the vet on Monday for an emergency appointment. Had the top down both on the way there in the morning and when I collected him later that afternoon |

Miss not having a convertible. Have had five or six in the past, love em. So long as it wasn’t raining or snowing, I generally had the top down. If it’s cold out, that’s what the heater is for! So long as you have a good windstopper behind you, the wind just goes right over the top. And the rain if you get caught in a shower... |

Had mine down many times the last few weeks , including today !!!! When it bloody rained it was parked out in the drive !!! Didn't realised it had rained to start with ,,,
And as for the issue with the virus ATM , your abiding by the two metre rule , if you have your windows open it's just the same , having your heating on or a cold air on I'm not using the internal switch for recirculating just the same really , well that's my thoughts ,,, just don't forget to put the roof up if it rains |

If you have a convertible, you bought it for that reason. You should drive with the top down at every opportunity.
More convertibles are sold in the UK than any other country in Europe. We are a nation of optimists |

Nothing in the government guidelines against driving a convertible with its roof down! If you're driving legitimately for one of the permitted reasons and you want to put the roof down then of course do it!
I have a BMW convertible and I love it. I've had the roof down a few times this year when I've been going for food shopping.
Nothing like getting her top down and getting inside her on a sunny afternoon
To all the haters: Yes we live in the UK so have to accept the limited time us convertible owners get our roofs down but on the days we can...you can't
And no, no flies in the mouth, there's a windscreen to catch those |

Love the Escort Cosworth.
The Figaro with a bike engine would be an ideal city car, it would be about accelerating into those gaps, not top speed. |

Sunny weekends like today were made for driving with the roof down. A welcome dose of pleasure during what is currently such a joyless time
Trying to look cool but failed ? Nah expensive flashy sports cars are cool and you know it. Anyone that says otherwise is either jealous or devoid of fun in their life (or perhaps both) |

The only working hardtop in my fleet is the transit. Current daily is a Eunos mk2. If it ain't rainin' the roof is off.
Nope, I'm not a hairdresser, not even slightly effeminate. I've been rained on, snowed on and half frozen but still top down. Humans are waterproof, they dry out eventually.
People can think what they want, as long as it stays a thought it won't bother me.
If you think its windy in a convertible try a 7 style sports body with the doors off as well.. Hardcore topless. Ruthless roofless. |

Won't own another FWD car ever, last one was a proper mini back in the 90's. Only been stuck once in 40 years and that was entirely down to being 'beached' on top of a snowdrift with all four wheels off the ground, my error, not the cars. |

This is a very touchy subject for me as I await the return of the mechanic after spending £700 on mine
When I can get to drive it I will be blasting around in the sunshine with the top down for sure!
In relation to virus transmission we are being told that good ventilation is key so surely having the top down and the wind in your hair is very responsible |

I used to have an MGB Roadster
I had to get rid of it
The drafts caused by open top driving brought on / contributed to a facial palsy
If you have a soft top, keep your ears and the sides of your face covered
I now take the middle aged option, a panaromic roof |

Way back in 1959 at the tender age of 19 I bought for the princely sum of £45 a pre war Morgan (4 wheel version), sadly the car came without a hood but did have a tonneau cover.
I drove that car daily for ten months without a hood before it finally expired.
Happy days. |

I have a convertible as a weekend car. Some like driving with the top down in all weathers & quite frankly, if they enjoy that, as far as I'm concerned its fine. I generally go for anything above 20c. Contrary to some views, the joys of driving a convertible are not restricted to driving with the roof down. Oh & from a covid perspective there is no problem. |
