My wardrobe doors have to be closed properly. No gap in the curtains. No open drawers. Mine are mostly at bed time. It’s odd. And I have to check the hob every night to make sure the gas is off, even though it never has been left on!

I have some weird little habits and things that I do, but that's not OCD.

I know a woman who has a terrible time with it, cleaning and checking things over and over. It must be awful to cope with.

I don’t like people touching my pens or my cups, glasses etc at work. I lock things away every night and I don’t share at all. I just feel really uncomfortable if people touch my pens.

Germs is another thing. I don’t want anyone near me if they are unwell. I tend to spray anti-bac after them as they leave.

I wouldn’t say I have OCD though because that’s quite a serious thing.

Yeah. I know a woman who had to have a new front door fitted because she used to lean heavily against it 20 or 30 times when she went out. She said she used to literally swing on the handle

My friend went to the doctors thinking she maybe had thrush. Yes, she had thrush, because she was showering three times a day, and literally cleaning the inside of her vagina with soap. She had severe OCD, she was doing so many things in a day because she thought something bad would happen if she didn’t. She’s still in therapy now, and this was six years ago

They don't have the time. I was reading this morning about a woman whose OCD related anxiety and depression has improved during lockdown. Partly because she's working from home and doesn't have to spend ages preparing to leave the house knowing she's missing two trams while she stands in front of the door for half an hour checking if it's locked.

It's an interesting discussion anyway.

I like things to be even numbers, like the volume on the TV, and I set my alarm for 6:44 instead of 6:45. If I'm taking a handful of sweets I'll make sure it's an even number. Multiples of 4 are the best.

So many barriers and misconceptions around mental illness have been overcome as of late, OCD is still a term that is massively misused.

I struggled with OCD for a long time through my teens up to my mid 20's, I never had any outward compulsions and the whole germs and handwashing thing didn't bother me, mine was my brain getting stuck on upsetting thoughts and taking over my life for months on end, then I'd eventually break that thought cycle only for it to be replaced by another. Nobody would ever have known because I didn't dare talk about it but it was massively upsetting for me. It's still there sometimes but I just treat it as background noise and ignore it, it doesn't have that power over me any more. I sympathise with anyone dealing with it, it can be utter hell.

I’ve met a lot of people like this , they also have to check if they switched heating / cookers off, when going out , frequently mislay items like keys, wallet and phone and forget names of new people they meet at events and parties.

I’m no doctor and know very little about OCD , but if it’s just that kind of stuff you might just need to train yourself to be a little more present , it’s not hard there are well known meditation techniques to overcome it and it works for most people.

I think these and most anxieties exist on a spectrum. It was explained to me that "interference with daily life and normal functioning" is the threshold at which a diagnosis makes sense.

A mental disorder???? Omg how uneducated is that post. Give me strength "

“ Obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD) is a mental disorder in which a person feels the need to perform certain routines repeatedly (called "compulsions"), or has certain thoughts repeatedly (called "obsessions").[1] The person is unable to control either the thoughts or activities for more than a short period of time.[1] Common compulsions include hand washing, counting of things, and checking to see if a door is locked.[1] Some may have difficulty throwing things out.[1] These activities occur to such a degree that the person's daily life is negatively affected,[1] often taking up more than an hour a day.[2] Most adults realize that the behaviors do not make sense.[1] The condition is associated with tics, anxiety disorder, and an increased risk of suicide.[2][3]”

I’m not sure using medical terminology of a specific diagnosis which the vast majority of people here won’t have is wrong. The term OCD is being belittled because someone cleans lots or buys something on a regular basis is a totally missed placed joke. OCD is a highly complex disorder which over rules the suffers lives and I’m sure you OP don’t have your life ruined by buying toothbrushes on a weekly basis. I write this as mental health nurse who for years has thought that the miss use of medical diagnosis for the sake of humour is massively wrong and is of detriment to those who suffer with it. I have patients who have to say they are diagnosed with OCD rather than the over used misguided self diagnosis that many claim they have that wouldn’t come anywhere close to the criteria for receiving the diagnosis.

Yeah I know. People always do it though. Get pleasure in belittling people or slating them when it’s obvious people didn’t mean things in certain ways. Pisses me right off too.

Don’t apologise - I wasn’t trying to turn it negative.

My answer was genuine as well, I don’t have anything people would class as OCD

I'm sorry, it's not a dig at you personally, that's not my style.

My issue is the bandying around of mental illness labels which then belittles very real conditions. It's so common place people don't even realise they're doing it. X

"I have some weird little habits and things that I do, but that's not OCD.

I know a woman who has a terrible time with it, cleaning and checking things over and over. It must be awful to cope with.

How do people have the time, that's what we can't grasp.

They don't have a choice, it's how their mind works. So time means nothing.

But surely if they have to be at work on time.....how would that work out?"

The OCD is stronger than worrying about being late for work.

A mental disorder???? Omg how uneducated is that post. Give me strength

I initially read that as “hovering” in straight lines, you definitely get free parking for that one, and it helps keep muddy footprints off your nice clean wooden floors

Sensual Touch? Can we have an opinion on levitation please ?

I struggled with OCD for many years in various different forms to varying degrees.

It was mostly under control but I've been increasingly compulsive since the pandemic but I think lots of people have.

Pegs on the washing line. Each item I hang up has to have matching pairs & I save the few odd ones in the little basket for items that need a single peg.

One of my ex’s had ocd.

I used to turn all the cans upside down in the kitchen cupboards to wind her up.

I thought it was funny, until one day she flipped and punched me in the mouth.

"I don’t like people touching my pens or my cups, glasses etc at work.

Although I've never known someone with OCD I have had, and do have first hand experiences with people with other mental conditions.

People are using the term OCD as an excuse these days because they like the knifes in the knife draw, plates stacked largest to smallest (I like them the other way, it reminds me that it can all come crashing down at any moment). Which isn't OCD, just common sense.

The only obsession I have revolves around money.

In non Covid times I supplement my pension by wheeling and dealing and as such carry a quantity of cash, all the notes £5, £10, and £20 have to be the same way round. when I sell something I will sit in the car and ensure the notes are in the correct way round before moving off.

They don't have a choice, it's how their mind works. So time means nothing.

But surely if they have to be at work on time.....how would that work out?"

I can't speak for everyone, but I spent a bit of time working from home when my illness was at its worst. I had to find jobs where working flexible hours was acceptable, and if I went through a particularly debilitating period I had to be honest with my employer and/or take some sick leave.

The key thing for me is that the OCD (ordering in my case) made me feel safe and secure. Do you make time to set a burglar alarm and lock your door? I was convinced that my checking rituals were keeping me safe, that if I didn't do them then terrible things would happen.

I got help, it was a long and expensive process but I feel that the OCD no longer stops me living life. It still flares up from time to time if I get particularly stressed, and I have to be alert to any habits I form because something can start off healthy but become a compulsion.

One of my friends from my therapy group has a cleaning compulsion and found it horrifically difficult when coronavirus kicked off because all the hand washing and cleaning with antiviral just fed straight into those compulsions. It was really difficult to know what was done from compulsion and what was done from a real requirement.

I hope anyone currently struggling gets help - even at present help is still available, sessions may just have moved to videocon. It's a hard process but worth it.

Classic case of a lot of people not knowing what OCD is, keeping your sock draw tidy is not OCD, (unless you have constant recurring intrusive thoughts about it), that’s just being anal or organised. OCD at its worst is Debilitating, one of the criteria for an OCD diagnosis is that it must cause turmoil for the person, if you like things neat and tidy you haven’t got OCD.

I get ocd about my laundry.

Even wash light blue things quite seperate from dark blue things, and always use one of those colour catcher sheets lol

nothing worse than clothes that have been stained by colour run in the wash,

pink (formerly white) things are the worst when something red has found it's way in... horrendous.
