Soldier eggs
Jump to: Newest in thread
Back in the day my nan used to make the best soft boiled eggs and soldier toast..so yummy and fun to eat.
Thing is the eggs have to be cooked to perfection. Runnny enough to dip all that toast in but not uncooked.
Cooked but not hard, I need lots of nice soft yolk.
Question is, how long do you boil an egg for to get that perfect runny egg?
Is it 3 mins or 4 mins for that perfect egg?
Do you add the eggs to cold water first, and start the count from whem they start boiling? Or drop them into boiling water and then start the count?
My grandson and I thank you for your help and tips. Nans gonna make him the best ever egg and soldiers

I got a stupid little gadget from a well known cheap shop. You stick it in at the same time as the eggs and it tells you how cooked the eggs are by changing colour |

Cut out the middle man and pop them in the kettle. Boil 3 times consecutively.
I just totally made that up.
I boil the water first, bring back to boil. 3 n half mins

I have heard of others using a kettle. Knowing my luck the eggs would crack, what a mess that would be! |

"I always put the eggs into a bowl of warm water first to avoid cracking. I bring the pot to boil and carefull lay eggs into water then time it. Medium eggs are about 3 1/2 mins on my gas cooker."
If I'm putting the egg straight into boiling water then I dip the spoon in the water first. I find this stops them cracking |

"Cold water. Count when it starts boiling. 3 mins very runny. I like 4 mins, can’t deal with runny white bits. 6 mins for hard boiled x"
i think I'd like one of the gadgets mentioned. The amount of time I end up the hardish one..well, it's disappointing. All those soldiers and nothing to dip |

Does it work?"
Hell yes. Eggs should be at room temperature before you start though |

Have the Eggs at room temperature
Get a pan of water boiling
Lower the eggs in gently
Leave for 1 minute
Pull pan off the heat, put lid on and leave for 6 minutes or 7 for a little bit firmer.
When I do poached eggs I get the water just above simmering and have bread in the toaster on 3.
When I crack the eggs into the water I start the toaster and when it pops the eggs are perfect.
Good luck |

And he did brilliant runny (but cooked) eggs"

I have one of those to, they are great. Although I find with larger eggs once I lob the top off I need to put it back in the water a little while to cook the rest of the white around the yolk.

Bang on my love. Having tasted your wares, I can vouch for your methods and timings too!
The only things I would add for those seeking eggucation is that the time will vary slightly depending on size of eggs. 3 minutes for small eggs, 3 and a half for medium, 4 minutes for large.
Oh and remove the eggs in the same order they were placed in the pan.
