Following on from goodnitegirl’s thread, what have you seen in real life that others probably haven’t?
I’ve had a tour around an experimental nuclear fusion reactor.
Go.... |

I've flown home from a skiing holiday on the flight deck with the pilots. Really interesting to see. Long story but not enough seats for passengers and that was the only safe (and spare) place to sit. Well before 9/11 days obviously and now the flight deck doors are locked. Wouldn't happen today. |

"Southern Right Whale playing splashy splashy with its calf.
Awwww, was that in Argentina?"
Newcastle Australia, they figured mum'd left it too late to migrate north and had the calf alone near the coast.
Coast guard and the locals stuck up a perimeter and made sure they were safe. Could see them from the beach for weeks...
Was brilliant |

"Inside a volcano
So jealous
It stank
Me too, in nisyros, greece.
Stank of sulphur
Well that's where most of our sulphur deposits form."
It was horrible but also cool at the same time |

In various jobs I've been round the De La Rue facility where banknotes are printed, one of America's biggest raisin processors, two oil refineries, a brine solution mining plant, a prison and a biofuels manufacturing site.
The brine plant was the most geekily interesting. |

A meteorite from start to finish (streak of bright yellowish light across the sky and then burn up) in my direct line of sight. I sometimes casually sky watch at night and it was not a sudden small flash like in a predicted shower. It seemed much slower and lower than that. An amazing sight. |

"A fatal road traffic accident right in front of me. I assisted the person who passed away before the ambulance arrived. Don't wish that upon anyone."
Exactly the same. I still rem_mber the day, time, weather, everything. Poor girl she was only 21. I was a mile away from home and she was less than a mile from work on her way home. It makes you think. |

A meteor then. It's only a meteorite when it's on the ground. |

I saw part of the London Olympics closing ceremony from a few hundred feet up in the air, while flying back into Heathrow from Belgium.
Quite spectacular. Probably a view only a few hundred people got to see. And there were only 8 people on my flight. |

It was. The pilot announced the fly by, told us where to sit, and flew past, while banked so we had a great view.
Hats off to BA. |

Did that a few times back in the day on standby travel - it’s good fun and did they give you the drill about how to break the cockpit window to escape in an emergency down the ladder? And give you the headset to listen in to Air Traffic Control? I miss those days!
Anyway my answer to the OP .. unknowingly and accidentally surprised and pissed off a copperhead snake in Australia .. had it hiss and wriggle at me so I backed off slowly, only later finding out how toxic it was if it had bitten me |

I’ve seen a lot of things that your average person wouldn’t see. I did crime and trauma scene cleaning for 2 years so I’ve seen brain tissue and skull fragments from when people decide to throw themselves off high things. Seen people eating crayons, seen people stabbing each other with sharpened nips and tooth brushes. Seen a lot of shit, literally. But mainly death related. |

Exactly that, alive and kicking. I always have a laugh with nurses at smear time, you can tell those that haven’t read your notes when they comment “oh that doesn’t look how it should” |

I've seen the inside of almost my entire digestive system on endoscopy cameras. No sedation, fully conscious to try and ask questions with a tube shoved down my throat. Easier to ask questions when the endoscope went up the other way |

Not so much seen as did - was part of the cause of a seismic movement in North London that registered on the Richter scale on 8th August 1992 somewhere between 8.30pm and 9.00pm
Only 36007 others in the whole world can make the same claim |
