Are there any of you out there who would be interested in a Roman/Spartan themed event when social distancing has been relaxed.
Maybe a night of Roman Ladies, Gladiators, Spartan Warriors and slave girls. . . ? |

"Thracians 'r us
Will Asterix be bringing his magic potion?
Wasn't Asterix a gaul?"
Indeed he was, but I expect the Goths, Ostragoths, Visigoths and Numidians will be gatecrashing the event as well |

"What have the Romans ever done for us?
Cultural erasure anyone?
Like the 80s group?
These were the original and the best. They even erased lots of Christianity!"
Not a bad plan really, if only they finished the job |

Like all zealots, they removed the bits they didn't like. (Treatment of heretics in the leadup to the council of Nicea) |

Sounds about right. I know that Julius Caesar's time in Gaul was particularly brutal. |

Their policies around cultural assimilation predate Caesar by a long way |

I'm more into military history. I find it fascinating how we are a species moulded by warfare. |

"Roman Trivia...where does the word decimation come from ...?
1 in 10 would be punished."
Yes if a legion brought disgrace or failed..they had to choose from a bag of pebbles, 10 per cent white the rest black...
The 90 percent then killed the ten percent... |

"That was my gateway drug..."
Mine was Euripedes. Russell quoted a little in his History of Western Philosophy, and it caught my imagination. So I read a few, and was struck by a) how recognisable these people were, and b) how little I knew of the world they lived in. Many more books later...
Is this the sort of party we're allowed to bring books to? |

I'm reminded of a line I heard at university.

""I was invited to a symposium, so I brought a keg."
A keg? Of beer? Who invited the barbarian?"
It's an amphora of wine or a team of Palmyran dancing girls, any civilised person knows that. |
